Weekly Prayer Reflection

The Joy of Work.

Work - we all have to do it, whether we like it or not.  Even if we like it, we tend to have mixed feelings.  There is almost an expectation in our society that unless our work is deeply ‘satisfying’ and well paid, we will whinge about it. Yet it doesn’t have to be like that.  In the coming week, we will celebrate both Labour Day and the Feast of St Joseph the Worker.

Our Christian faith holds that by working we share in God’s creative power. In the Creation Story we see God stopping to admire the divine work and proclaim it as good, even very good.  In the Gospels we see Jesus working as a tradesman for years before preaching. We are made in God’s image and we, too, should take satisfaction in our work.  No matter how humble or boring it is, we find that when we finish a task and appreciate what we have done, we grow as human beings and we have a sense of satisfaction and joy.   Yes, we should be paid a fair wage – that is the way the wider society shows it appreciation of our work – but our respect for and pride in our work is more important than money.

It is important for our children to learn this sense of satisfaction. They need to do chores around the house.  Even though it can be a bother for us to teach them (it is far easier to do it ourselves), even though they grumble and argue, even though work done might not be up to scratch, they get a sense of belonging to their family and community that no amount of verbal affirmation can give them and at the same time, you, as parents, have the opportunity to be their teachers in the important skills of life.

Loving God, you delight in creation.  As we work, may your Spirit play within us so that we may delight in sharing your care for people and creation.  May the example of Jesus, the tradesman, inspire to take pride in our work.  We ask this in his name confident that you will hear us.

From the Principal

It has been a month since I have been at school, taking a week either side of the Easter holidays for some study leave. While I enjoyed some extra time to concentrate on my studies, I have very much enjoyed returning this week and catching up with many parents, staff and most especially our students. I sincerely thank Rheanna Starr and Janette McLennan for taking on added responsibilities in my absence, and I know that many other staff offered to assist with additional tasks and duties while I was offsite.

Sad News – On Sunday morning, I received the sad news that Mrs Loy Durkin, long-time friend and supporter of our school and the St Vincent’s Parish had passed away. Some of you may have seen Mrs Durkin at our school masses or known her as one of our knitting ladies. Mrs Durkin’s daughter in law, Lisa, taught at our school for a number of years, and a conversation would not pass without Loy sharing some news of her family, of which she was immensely proud.  She always liked to keep up to date with the happenings at school and would often pop in for a chat or to "keep an eye on us", as she would jokingly say.

May Loy rest in her loving God’s arms.

ANZAC Day

Thank you to the students and families of St Joseph’s Wandal who participated in the ANZAC Day Dawn Service and/or March on Sunday. As always, it was a lovely day on which we remembered all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service. After the absence of such public celebrations due to the pandemic last year, it was especially meaningful to see such large groups of people out in force to recognise this important day.

Mothers' Day

Mothers' Day is fast approaching and we will once again be holding our Mothers' Day stall here at school. Students are asked to donate a gift to the value of $5-$10. On Friday, 7th May, students can purchase a gift for their mum (or other special person in their lives) from the stall for $5. This stall is organised and staffed by our parents and all proceeds go to the school. Please note, if your child wishes to purchase two gifts, they are asked to donate two gifts also, to ensure that no one misses out.

Our P and F President, Emma Singleton, has kindly set up a Volunteer Booking system for those who can give some time to help supervise the stall. (Dads, we are looking at you!)

Please click on the following web link (or copy it into your web browser if clicking doesn't work) to go to the signup sheet:

Development Cup (Capras CQ Rugby League Challenge)

Our school has been invited to enter a Rugby League team in this year’s ‘Development Cup’ (which will now be called the Capras CQ Challenge (CCQC)) to be held on FRIDAY 14 MAY at Rugby Park.

The organisers of this year’s CCQC have decided upon the following age restrictions:

·         Students born between Jan-June 2011

·         Students who are born anytime in 2010

·         Students born after June 30 in 2009

Information was distributed to interested players in Years 5 and 6 yesterday. If your child meets the above criteria and you give them permission to take part in this competition, please return the (paper) forms to the school office by Tuesday 4 May. If we do not receive a response from you by this date, we will not offer your child a place on the team. In the event of much interest, we will hold trials to select a team for the day, with preference going to our Year 6 students. Mr Geoffery Joyce and Miss Brittany Hinz will be coordinating and supervising our team for the day.

Season B Sport Update – All students in Years 4, 5 & 6

The Rockhampton District Primary School Inter-school sports program – Season B begins Friday afternoon, 21 May.  All children in Years 4-6 will play as part of this program each Friday afternoon and separate information has been sent to families today with regards to this.

Year 4 students will all play Hockey. We ask that families of Years 5 and 6 students access the E-Form to submit their children’s preferences of sport. Years 5 and 6 students can choose Hockey, Rugby League or Netball. If we do not receive an E-Form from your family by 5 May, we will allocate your child to a sport/team of our choosing.  Please refer to the full note for further information.

In 2021, we will have:

·         8 Hockey teams

·         4 Netball teams (Trials will occur for teams – TBA)

·         1 Rugby League team (Trials will occur for teams – TBA)

Secondhand Uniforms - Facebook Page

Thank you to the enthusiastic group of parents who have our second-hand uniforms Facebook page up and running.  This is a great way to buy, sell or perhaps swap uniforms items within this school community. The weather has started to cool, so please ensure your children have the school uniform jacket purchased, NAMED and ready to wear. Just as we do not allow your children to wear alternate shorts, or shoes, or shirts, other winter uniform jackets are not permitted to be worn at school.

School Fees - Term 2

School Fees – Term Two fees will be distributed this Friday, 30 May and will be due on Friday 14 May. Please contact me should you be experiencing any difficulties in meeting your fee commitment.

Commonwealth Bank School Banking Program

Queensland’s Education Minister Grace Grace announced on Monday that bank-run schemes such as the Commonwealth Bank’s School Bankng program would be out of Queensland schools when the Commonwealth Bank's contract expired at the end of July. I am yet to hear from our School Banking Contacts but will pass on further information when I do. We will continue with weekly banking here at school for the time being.

Prep Enrolments 2022

We are busily taking enrolments for the 2022 school year. Our Prep Parent Information Session has been set for Thursday 15 July at 5.15pm. If you know of any families interested in a place at our school next year, please urge them to complete their online enrolment process as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. I hope to begin the interview process for existing families towards the end of this term and will start contacting existing families (who have completed their enrolment process) in the next couple of weeks.

P and F Meeting –this Thursday

Our next P and F Meeting is scheduled for this Thursday, 29 April. As Catholic School Parents Queensland are holding a meeting here in Rockhampton, we have decided to make the most of this opportunity.

Our P and F Meeting will be held at the Red Lion at 5.15pm. We will then make our way across the road to the Catholic Education Office for the CSP session which commences at 6.30pm. All parents and friends of our school  are welcome to attend both sessions. We love having new people join us! Please let the office staff know if you will be attending so we can ensure we have enough seats booked. If you wish to stay for the session afterwards, please register at the link on the flyer (see below).

Yours in partnership,

Prayer - Gospel focus

A reading from John 10:11 - 18

Jesus said, " I am the good shepherd who is willing to die for the sheep.  When the hired man sees a wolf coming, he leaves the sheep and runs away. I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and they now me. No one takes my life away from me.  I give it up of my own free will.

The image of God as shepherd was a powerful one for the Jewish people. The shepherd in Jesus' time knew each  sheep and when the sheep needed to be moved, he would lead them from in front and they would follow. The shepherd would even sleep with them to protect them during the night.  Just as God knew each of his sheep, he too knows each of us by name and would lay down His life for us.

Prayer Assembly

Please join Year 6S for prayer assembly this Friday at 8.35am, as they lead us in a Christian meditation.

Student Wellbeing Survey

Student voice is imperitive to improving mental health and wellbeing in our school.  We want to know what we are doing well and what we can do better. Therefore, students in Year 4, 5 and 6 will complete a short survey from Be You, which is a national mental health initiative supported by the Catholic Education Office, Rockhampton.

  • This survey will take 10–15 minutes and includes 24 questions.
  • Students do not have to write their name
  • There are no right or wrong answers and students won’t be assessed on their answers.
  • Students are to be as honest as they can when responding to each statement. This helps us understand how to create a more mentally healthy school for all of us.
  • If they don’t want to respond to a statement, students can skip it.
  • When responding to each statement students are asked to  think about how they are feeling today.

Mental health and wellbeing can be tough to talk about sometimes. If you’d like to talk about what’s going on for you, or someone you care about, there are lots of ways to get support including:

Prime Minister's Spelling Bee

Students in Years 3 to 5 competed in the 2021 Spelling Bee School Round on 15 March.  We are excited that a number of our students will be competing in the State Finals tomorrow!

Congratulations Kayden (Year 5), Cohen (Year 4), Valerie (Year 4), Charli (Year 4) and Tallulah (Year 3).

Year One's Book Corner

Year 1 recently read ‘The Little Queenslanders Alphabet Book’ by Sally Scudamore. We found the front cover interesting, and we loved the colourful illustrations.

Teddy - I liked this book because it was about the alphabet.

Ivy - I liked this book because it was about different animals and different places.

Raina - We learnt about animals that we didn’t know.

Evie - There were lots of places in the book that we didn’t know about.

Luke - I liked how the animals were doing things for each letter.

Austin - I liked how the illustrations had animals in them.

Oscar - I like it because I learnt about different places.

Hudson - My favourite part of the book was when the whales were hula hooping.

Felix - My favourite part was the yabbies in Yeppoon.

Ethan - I liked learning about different parts of Queensland.

Lucas - I liked that the letters told us different Australian animals.

Cody - My favourite part was hearing all the different names for different towns.

Byron - I enjoyed reading the Rockhampton page, it’s where we live!

We would give this book 5 stars and we feel that this would be a good book for Preps to read when they are learning the alphabet.

Flu Season Reminder

As you are aware every year Queensland experiences an influenza or flu season. As we enter this season it is timely to remind parents and care-givers not to be complacent about flu. Queensland Health advises that where possible, people need to be vaccinated for the flu every year.

Flu is a virus more serious than the common cold and can be spread through talking, coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include sudden fever, dry cough, muscle aches and pains, fatigue, headache, sore throat and a stuffy or runny nose.

If your child has flu-like symptoms, the following is advised:

·       Keep your child home from school;

·       Ensure your child washes their hands regularly with soap and water or sanitiser gel;

·       Encourage your children when coughing or sneezing, to cover their mouth and nose with disposable tissues which should be disposed of immediately;

·       Ensure they drink plenty of fluids and get lots of rest;

·       Consult your doctor if you are concerned about their symptoms.

Queensland Health Guidelines advise that individuals displaying flu like symptoms should  stay at home until such symptoms have passed (normally 5-7 days).

Families should also reinforce the recommended protective actions listed above.

Increased awareness and ongoing attention to prevention and control measures, such as vaccination and good hygiene, are steps that we can all promote to reduce the impact of influenza.
