Big Thank You To The P&C

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the great contribution of the volunteers of the P&C during this year. At the last meeting, the P&C donated $60 000 to the new Kindergarten play area shelter. This project will be completed over the Christmas holiday and I know we will be excited to see the end result at the start of the 2022 school year.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing volunteers that have supported the different programs that the P&C runs. This includes the uniform shop, the band committee and the book club. A special mention to Samantha Hinchelwood, who has been the driving force behind the band program over the last couple of years.

Tonight will be the last P&C meeting for the year. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to whpspandc@gmail.com so that we are able to determine the venue (staffroom or hall) to meet COVID guidelines. The current Department of Education guidelines require that parents who attend this meeting must be fully vaccinated.

Busy Time For Year 6

The next four weeks will be an exciting and busy time for our Year 6 students. Tuesday 14th December is the date of the Year 6 Farewell which will be held within the school hall. I would like to thank Mrs Moses who is currently in the process of coordinating this night. More details about the night will be sent out over the coming days.

We are also planning on having a Year 6 Graduation Assembly on Wednesday 15th  December at 9:45am. This event will need to follow a number of Department of Education restrictions to enable it to be held.

We would like to invite two guests per student to attend this event. The strict guidelines will mean that we are unable to allow any more than 2 guests per student. As per the current Department guidelines, all parents and guests will be required to show evidence of full vaccination to attend.

More information will be sent home in the coming days.

COVID-19 Symptoms

I would like to thank the amazing support that we have received from parents to ensure students and staff are safe when they are at school. It is important that when students are unwell, even with mild symptoms, that they get tested for COVID-19 and follow NSW Health directions. Although this may change, at the moment we ask unwell students to be tested with a PCR test to clear them for a return to school and not a rapid antigen home test.

Each day we have several parents send through a snap shot of the negative result to our school email and we thank them for following the process.

Kindergarten Orientation

We look forward to our 2022 Kindergarten students joining us for an orientation session during the week beginning Monday 6th December 2021. Due to the current guidelines, groups will be smaller, staggered throughout the week and will avoid regular school starting times.

If you have a child starting Kindergarten next year and you have not enrolled them as of yet, we ask that you contact the school as soon as possible so that they can be included in these sessions.

NAPLAN School Readiness Test

In 2022, Winston Hills Public School will transition from paper to online NAPLAN assessments. Next week, some of our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be involved in a short school readiness test. This School readiness test allows the school to:

·         engage and become familiar with the online assessment platform

·         understand changed administrative procedures

·         reflect on IT required to deliver the assessment in 2022.

The School readiness test is not an assessment of student ability. Student test attempts will not be marked and results will not be available.

Classes for 2022

The school is currently in the process of planning for 2022. The number of classes a school has is based on the number of students who are enrolled. It is extremely important that if your child is in K-5 and is leaving the school this year that we are aware of this so that we can take this into consideration with our planning.

Presentation & Special Awards Years 2-6

Awards for Years 3-6 students to acknowledge their achievements throughout the year will be presented to the students differently this year following the Department’s Covid-19 guidelines. On Friday 10th December we will be holding our end of year presentations for Years 3 to 6. Due to the Department’s guidelines around COVID, parents/carers will be unable to attend the assemblies as they normally have happened. Special invitations will be sent home to invite parents/carers of Year 5 students who will be acknowledged as leaders for 2022 and also parents of Year 6 students who will be receiving major awards (e.g. Dux, Citizenship). These parents will be able to watch the part of the assembly that their child is being acknowledged for.

Photos of the students receiving these awards will be posted on our school’s Facebook page and the Newsletter - only if your child has permission to publish.

Special Awards Presentation Years 2-6

The special awards will be presented by Mr Byrne during Week 10 on Monday 13th December 2021. Awards will include; Band, Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics, Library Monitors, SRC, Technology Leaders, PSSA  and  CAPA awards.

Winston Hills PS will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted over weeks 8 and 9. The survey is available in 23 languages. Your responses are very much appreciated as your valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

We would appreciate your help in completing this survey by following the link provided.

The BRAVE Program

There has been a lot of uncertainty this year, which can result in children (and us) becoming quite anxious about the future. If you are finding that your child is presenting with some worries and anxiety, then the online program called BRAVE could help.

This program is written by psychologists and is free and easy to use. Here is an outline of the program and what your child will learn.

Body Signs. Your child will learn about what their body tells them when they are nervous or scared. They will understand when worrying is helpful and when it’s unhelpful and impacting their happiness.

Relax. This session is about learning how to relax the body when our body tells us that we are worrying.

Activating Helpful Thoughts. This is a helpful session all about choosing healthy thoughts over unhelpful ones. They learn to be a detective to find evidence for their unhelpful thoughts so they can problem solve to get themselves through a challenge.

Victory Over Fears. Students learn how to face their fears so they can cope and feel happy. They do this using the BRAVE ladder which helps them break a fear or worry into smaller steps to overcome it.

Enjoying Yourself. This is all about rewarding themselves when they work hard at overcoming their fears. Students come up with a plan and reward system so they can feel proud of their hard work in overcoming a worry.

Book Club

Your child will bring home a catalogue up to twice a term.  On the back of each catalogue you will find an order form. Please note that Winston Hills Public School does not take orders using this form.  The only way to order is ONLINE.  Please do not return the paper form to the school with money as it cannot be processed.  If you would like to order, simply use the Scholastic Book Club LOOP platform for parents.  Your child's order is submitted directly to school safe and sound, and the books will be delivered to your child's class.  You can place your child's order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from App Store or Google Play.

P&C Meeting - Tuesday 23 November - 7.30pm

The final P&C Meeting will be held on Tuesday 23 November 2021 in person at 7.30pm in the staffroom.

Please RSVP to whpspandc@gmail.com so we can assess the number of attendees.

Department guidelines require that parents who attend this meeting must be fully vaccinated.
