Lismore South Public School Newsletter

Week 10 Term 1

Principal Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thursday 1st April is the last day of Term 1 and we wish our families a safe and happy holiday. As we head into the Easter break and the uncertainty unfolding with Covid cases in both Brisbane and Northern NSW, we hope you all stay healthy and continue to regularly visit the NSW Health website for updates.

I am very pleased to announce that our school has been successful  in gaining a $15000 grant to fund sustainable education school projects. The School Infrastructure NSW's Sustainable Schools funding will allow us to provide opportunities to develop and implement innovative hands-on projects that help students learn about environmentally sustainable practices and take real steps to enhance the sustainability of our school environment. The grants are part of a four year, $10 million dollar state program.

Lismore South Public School staff will be participating in professional learning on Monday 19th April. Staff will engage in a presentation with  keynote speaker Michael Crossland around resilience and mindset, as well as will work collaboratively to refine their skills in using explicit teaching strategies.

On behalf of all staff, we wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday. We look forward to seeing students back at school for Term 2  on Tuesday 20th April.

Kind regards,

Larissa Polak

Peer Support Leadership Training

This week our Year 6 students participated in Peer Support Leaders Training at Southern Cross University. The training prepared our students for their role as Peer Support Leaders throughout Term 2. Over the 2 days, the students were divided into small groups as they worked through a range of experiential activities and took part in discussions.

The Peer Support Program will commence in Term 2 2021 and it will provide a fun and engaging environment for our young people to learn about social issues. The modules are designed to equip our students with skills to deal proactively with life experiences. The Peer Support Program promotes wellbeing, which encourages positive relationships, connectedness and a sense of responsibility.

This week at Preschool

Children were very excited to create their own Easter hats at preschool and participate in the Easter Hat Parade. It was fantastic to see children parading their hats, dancing, expressing their enthusiasm, and develop a sense of belonging to preschool, the whole school, and community. We have been exploring shapes and this week we looked at ovals, we drew ovals on the pavement with chalk and decorated them like Easter eggs using nature.

This week at preschool we have enjoyed role-playing in home corner, building cities from wooden blocks, collecting and transporting rocks around the outdoor environment, drawing families, cooking in the sandpit, and cooking in the sandpit.

We have had a wonderful Term 1 getting to know each other and our families, developing strong relationships, and learning together through play. We wish you a safe and relaxing Easter break and look forward to Term 2.

Our school canteen is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. All food needs to be pre-ordered by 9.00am. Food will be served in a paper bag supplied by the school. Canteen only operates for lunch, not recess.

Covid-19 Testing

Students should be at school unless:

  • they have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition and the expected timeframe.
  • they are currently unwell.

In accordance with advice from NSW Health, parents and carers are reminded NOT to send children to school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms.

All students and staff with flu-like symptoms will need to be tested and provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result and be symptom-free before being permitted to return to school. Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test will not be permitted to return to school for a 10-day period. Additionally, they must be symptom-free for at least 3 days prior to returning to school.

Find more information about COVID-19 symptoms.

COVID-19 testing for students with complex health or disability may be challenging. In these situations, schools ask the parents or carers have their child assessed by their medical practitioner. Where a medical practitioner determines that a COVID-19 test is not required, documentation must be provided to the school to confirm that the student does not have symptoms that warrant a COVID-19 test. The certificate must also indicate that the student is able to return to school.
