Plattsburg Public School Newsletter

March 2021, Term 1 Week 6

Principal's Message

It's hard time believe, but we are already halfway through Term 1.  We have a few of our traditional Plattsburg events coming up between now and the school holidays.  Our Easter Hat Parade and Athletics Carnival are coming up, with a few changes due to the Covid guidelines.  Harmony Day is also planned. Rumour has it students will be taking a journey to other countries (even if they are only travelling across the school - no plane required!) with a cool treat for each student on the day thanks to the generosity of our P&C.Stage 3 students will participate in a Cyber Safety talk from a police liaison officer.  Social media in particular has been an area causing a number of issues between students at school.  We ask that parents please be mindful of their children's access to these platforms.  The E-Safety Commissioner has a number of good resources for parents to guide discussions with your children. Congratulations on 20 years service, Mrs Bridge

Congratulations to our School Administration Manager,  Mrs Bridge, on 20 years of service to the Department of Education.  Mrs Bridge does an amazing job managing our school finances, office operations, SASS staff and first aide.  Thank you Mrs Bridge and congratulations on reaching such a milestone!

COVID Intensive Learning Support Program

The Government and Department of Education have recognised that 2020 was a disruptive year and have therefore committed funds to an intensive learning support program to be delivered in 2021. For Plattsburg Public School this means the school will be able to offer additional support in numeracy and literacy through small group intensive tuition to support student progress in 2021.

The department’s website has further information on this program.

Harmony Day

PPS will celebrating Harmony Day on Friday 19th March. 'AROUND THE WORLD' will be the theme for the day at PPS. More information will be sent out to the school community in the coming week.

Students please get your costume from around the world organised or you can wear the colour orange on the day.

Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.

The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’, the day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone.

House Captains

Congratulations to our House Captains for 2021. The students were presented with their badges today. Candidates were asked to present a short speech, "Why do you want to be House Captain?" with voting based on those speeches. Thank you to all of our students who presented a speech, it was great to see so many of our students demonstrate the confidence to speak in front of their peers. 3-6 Sport will occur every Friday morning at 10:00 a.m.

5/6 Music

5/6S have been learning about the elements of music. This term we are focusing on the element of 'beat' and this week we have been learning musical notation. Each student composed a piece of music either individually or in a pair and then performed their composition for the class using clapping. All students demonstrated an ability to read, write and perform their music. Here are some of our wonderful compositions.

And in STEM news...

1H have been learning about Living Things. This week in STEM they had to try and make a piece of fruit out of LEGO. This was challenging as most fruit is round and LEGO is square. They did a great job, what do you think?

Lego Club

New lunchtime activity: Lego Club

If anyone has any Duplo or Lego that they are no longer using and would like to donate this to Plattsburg Public School it would be appreciated to support our new lunch time Lego club. Please send any donations to the office and we will make sure the Lego club organiser receives the donations.

Sizzling Starts with 1H

In 1H we have been working hard to make our writing begin with a Sizzling Start. This means no more 'Once upon a time' at the start of our stories. Here are just a few of the amazing pieces so far. Mr Henderson is confident you won't be able to workout where his sentence starter ends and their writing takes over.

We bent down and crept closer. We got scared and turned the lights on but they didn't turn on. We got a key and we opened the door.... -G

We bent down and crept closer. When we opened the door it was broken. Then we heard some noises. Then we saw the monster.... -K

We bent down and crept closer. The people knew they were in danger. They called the police.... -A

We bent down and crept closer to the black cave. We saw a skeleton! I felt a spider. I was turning into a spider.... -O

Keep an eye out for more Sizzling Starts next edition!

Love Your Library

Hello Plattsburg families... My name is Sandy and I am the Library Admin Officer, employed at the school on Mondays.

How exciting to be finally reopening the library for class borrowing again. It is important that families as well as students are aware that books are loaned for 2 weeks and then need to be returned to school. Please assist your child to be responsible for what they borrow. A good idea is to have a spot, box, bag etc at home that is especially for these library books, and to then support your child to create a habit of keeping the book/s there so they don't get misplaced. It is really important to instill these responsibility ethics as children... as responsible children grow into responsible adults ! Notes will go home monthly whenever books are overdue. If these books are not returned after 3 mths, a request for payment letter will be sent home and payment will be required to be made at the office. Borrowing privileges will be limited/  suspended for any applicable students until this payment is made.

I look forward to being of any assistance to you all, that I can be...

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Challenge opens on Monday 1st March 2021. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools. If you need help using the website and the answer cannot be found on the PRC Support site at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Don’t forget you can keep track of books you are reading over the summer to be added to your reading log once the challenge opens. Anything you have read from August 31st 2020 can be counted towards the 2021 PRC.

Year 6 Shirts

Year 6 students have the opportunity to purchase a Year 6 polo shirt which they are able to wear as part of their school uniform for the remainder of the school year. This shirt features the school's crow logo on the front chest area and the names of the Year 6 students on the back.

The cost for this shirt is $40. Shirts are available in children's and adult sizes to fit all students. Samples are available at the office for parents and students to check sizing if unsure. It is highly recommended that your child try a sample size to allow the shirt to fit them for the remainder of the year.

Order forms can be downloaded at the end of this newsletter.

Online Canteen

The canteen has updated the classes and teachers in www.quickcliq.com.au.  Having the incorrect class on a lunch order can really slow down the process of sorting lunches into the correct lunch baskets. A drop-down box with the correct class names and teachers has been updated and available now. Could parents/carers please update their students details next time they order at  https://quickcliq.com.au/. The example in this newsletter shows what is received by the canteen when the orders are printed out each day with this example clearing showing the class and teacher/s.

A reminder that it is against food handling regulations for food from home to be reheated at the canteen. This also applies to cups of noodles that have not been purchased from the canteen.

Thank you for your continued support of our P&C Canteen.

Variety Livvi's Place Foreshore Park Newcastle

To the Schools, Kids and Families in the Newcastle Region,

You may have heard that Variety and The City of Newcastle are building an amazing new Inclusive Playspace as part of the redevelopment of Foreshore Park. This is a space we want all kids, families and the wider community to feel welcome, safe and that they belong – and we want to raise the voices of our kids and teens, as they are the real play experts!

Last year we had the pleasure of conducting a  few school consultations with some of the school kids in Newcastle and surrounding areas for the new Variety Livvi’s Place inclusive playspace. The children’s feedback was passed onto the designers and then fed into the draft concept design. This design is now on public display for comment and we would love all the kids of the Newcastle region to have a look at what we have designed and tell us what they think. This is a great opportunity for your students to understand and participate in a community engagement in a safe, fun and exciting way, using great technology. It also is a practical example of how the voices of our kids are important and valued. We want to empower them to share what they think as we create these public spaces  for them to participate and enjoy community life in Newy.

This maybe something your teachers want to run through in an activity in class? Feedback can be anonymous. https://newcastle.nsw.gov.au/have-your-say/projects/reimagine-newcastle-harbour-foreshore

We would be also be grateful if you can share this link through your school newsletter or Facebook page to encourage all students and their families to share their thoughts on the Design.https://newcastle.nsw.gov.au/have-your-say/projects/reimagine-newcastle-harbour-foreshore

The survey is open until the end of next week, Friday 5 March.

If you have any questions or would like more information , please don’t hesitate to contact me via email or on 4043778142
