Alawa Primary School Newsletter

Welcome to the Alawa Primary School weekly newsletter.

Principal Updates

Week 7 is with us and we are SOOOOOO excited about our community event Thursday this week. 'Our Territory Home' will be a fantastic evening where families can have a blast with activities from 5pm including 'Croc on a Choc',  'Barra Classic' and 'Pin the Tail on the Feral pig' - just to name a few . From 6pm children are called into classrooms and we anticipate the concert commencing at 6:15pm with Territory icon  Sara Storer headlining to start us off.

As always if older or younger  siblings attend they are the responsibility of parents and should not be unaccompanied. This a very special family night and we want to be sure everyone is safe and can happily engage in all activities. The side and back gates will be kept locked and all families are asked to come through the front gate where the follow the COVID check in as per NTG requirements. We do have COVID Safe arrangements in place.

As per a suggestion from last year we will have a Paparazzi section for photos set up at the front of the stage area. We will also be filming the night and will make this available to families down the track after editing and polishing has been done by the very talented Ms Sullivan.

Food and drinks are available and as usual tickets will be required to avoid handling cash with the food. Cash and EFTPOS facilities are available at the top ticket booth and cash sales at the bottom ticket booth. Our event is non-smoking and alcohol free.

Last  assembly our latest Honour award winner and Principal of the day was awarded to Miss Gisele Roe.

Gisele has earned 10 Honour Distinction Awards with 100 merits showing her commitment and dedication to the Alawa way.

Gisele was very busy through out the day helping Miss Tamra with jobs for the Whole School Performance, handed out lots of merits, visited the kitchen lessons [and delivered food to the front office team] and was very helpful all day.

Gisele's favourite part of the day "was getting my honour distinction handed to me. I really liked when all the Transition students were really nice to me"

Great job Gisele!

Question for Week 7:

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 6 Term 3: 94.09%

It is terrific having all our families back with us at school.

The class with the highest attendance for Week 6: Year 1 White with 99.57%!

In the lead for Term 3 we have Year 1 Bullock with 97.86%

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 45 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 6 Term 3!

The class with the least lates for Week 6 was: Preschool Blue Group with 0 lates!

In the lead for the term we have Year 1 Bullock with 2 lates!!!

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behavior in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day, as well as having a go at the weekly quiz. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points from the activity after recess on Friday where we count the students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 6 of Term 3 Manton is ahead of Goyder and Finnis.

Goyder is in the lead for the year!

Recycling

Alawa Recycling is not only an important part of our fundraising activates here at Alawa with all proceeds going directly back into the farm, but also a vital step in helping us achieve the goal of creating a more sustainable farm and garden program.

Items can be deposited into the house bags in the back car park and are counted at the end of each week as each item earns a point for that house.

Science news

It has been a busy term of Science as students have been out and about learning all about the world around us during science lessons in Term 3. Alawa Primary School has provided a great place to experiment and discover.

Year 1 students have been looking for all the places water can be used and have been brainstorming sustainable solutions to water wasting problems. We have spent a lot of time in the farm investigating.

Year 2 classes have been using our understanding of how the world turns to investigate things such as day and night, seasons and shadows.

Upper year’s classes have been exploring by using and creating their own maps, investigating different landscapes, collecting and testing different soil samples and attempting to create earthquake proof structures.

All classes participated in science week activities across Weeks 5,6 & 7 where we learnt all about sustainable food production for the future.

Steven Trezise [Science and PE Teacher]

Preschool news

Tomorrow night, Thursday 2nd September will be our whole school concert evening. The theme this year is ‘Our Territory Home’ and the Preschool has a real treat to share with you for our performance. We our doing a song based on a well-known children’s story but with a Northern Territory/ Alawa Twist . The Preschool children have been enjoying practicing our song with our Visiting Artist Sara Storer and are underway making special artworks for our performance and learning accompanying actions.

It’s going to be a wonderful evening which begins at 5pm with fun activities and food available to purchase. Families can bring a rug or a chair, have dinner and  soak up the Alawa atmosphere. The performance begins at 6:15pm and different classes will be performing an original song about an aspect of our unique territory lifestyle, which the students have co-written with Ms Storer.

The preschool team look forward to seeing all our Alawa Preschool Families at this fabulous whole school event.

We hope you have a great week!

Alice, Emma and Kelly and Flor [Preschool Team]

Playgroup

We had such a fun week at Play Group this week. It was so great to be back and playing with our friends and our caregivers. This week we enjoyed playing inside with playdough, squeezing and squishing, cutting, and creating. We also loved the Fire Station and drawing tables.

We visited the farm and fed Tilly and Barbara and the chickens. We absolutely love exploring the Farm, walking through the maze of vegetables and trees. In the Preschool yard we clambered on the play equipment, built with the large wooden blocks and painted on the easels. We also shared a biscuit. This week we’ll make some scones to share so come along and join us then.

Library News

Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:

·      Set the example. Let children see you read.

·      Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.

·      Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.

The theme of our Scholastic Book Fair is Reading Oasis: A cool place to discover hot books!

It’s a fun reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.

Book Fair dates: Week 9 September 13th – 17th

Shopping hours:     Monday – Friday: 8am – 8:30am

                                   Monday, Thursday, Friday: 3pm – 4pm

Tuesday and Wednesday: 3pm – 6pm [Come see us when you attend Student Led Conferences]

We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.

Tek Ninja news

Hello from the Tek Interns! We are rocking our new shirts!

This term we have been focused on coding and robotics.

We have had fun meeting in the STEM and Science rooms, programming Bee Bots and making resources for the teachers to use in Year 1 and Transition. Some of us Tek Interns have been invited into Transition to help teach the students all about how to code and later in the term we hope to be helping the year 1s to program the Bee-Bots around a map.  We will also be doing some coding in Scratch Junior and other apps ready to support the younger grades.

Feedback from our class teachers has been nothing but positive. “They are so helpful in class by being responsible for ICT devices, helping to assist other students with ICT issues and helping to teach peers new skills.”

We look forward to sharing our coding with you later in the term.

Bronwyn Cleary [Tek Interns Co-Ordinator]
