Delany College - Granville

Newsletter Term 2 Week 5

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Last Sunday, 23 May 2021, we celebrated the feast of Pentecost. Pentecost is observed on the 7th Sunday after Easter and in our modern church it is recognised as the sharing of the Holy Spirit among the Apostles and the first followers of the Church after Jesus ascended into Heaven. In celebrating this important feast during mass at St Peter’s, Pope Francis reminded us that it is a time for unity and a time to reject the ideologies “that divide and separate us". It is a time where the challenges we face require us to come together and provide comfort and support for each other. This is a very timely message for our community as we continue to face the ongoing challenges of COVID-19 and support those most in need. Thank you all for your continued generosity as we raise funds for Caritas, St Vincent De Paul and the Delany Foundation. Hospitality and welcome are central to our Patrician mission and our spirituality as a faith based community.

Today, along with our school captains, Naomi Habib and Brandon Zaiter, their parents, and Miss Stephanie Llave, I had the privilege of attending the 200 Year Celebration of Catholic Education in Australia.  In his homily, Bishop Vincent acknowledged the enormous contribution that has been made to education by past generations but reminded us of the enormous task before us, as teachers and parents, of preparing the next generation to contribute to a society focussed on the common good of all as members of a faith filled society.  Celebrating mass as one of 80 schools in the Diocese of Parramatta, I was reminded of the tremendous opportunities we have and can provide to students as a community of schools.

Last week, we were grateful to have Mrs Catherine Larkin, the Principal of CathWest Innovation College,  visit our students. We are pleased to announce that commencing from 2022, students at Delany will be able to access courses offered by CathWest, including school-based traineeships and apprenticeships, while remaining a student at Delany College. This unique opportunity adds to the available pathway and study options available to senior students at Delany, allowing them to pursue work, vocational training and tertiary education pathways to set them up for success in their future careers.

Finally, I will be taking leave from 1 June until the end of Term 2. Mr Anthony Blomfield will be Acting Principal during this time and Ms Karina Anthony will be Acting Assistant Principal.  I look forward to returning at the beginning of Term 3 and wish you well for the end of Term 2 and the holiday period.

God Bless

Mr Paul Easton

Multicultural Day 2021

Friday 18 June 1:30 - 5:30pm

The Delany College Multicultural Day has become an annual event over the past few years. It is an event that is designed to showcase and celebrate the rich diversity of the families in this community.

Last year was a small affair that was run within the required COVID restrictions, so this year we are hoping and praying to return to the festival of 2019.

So what is Multicultural Day?

  • CULTURAL DRESS - students are encouraged to wear to school, or bring and change into, clothes that represent their family’s culture. The highlight of the afternoon will be a fashion parade by students representing their many cultures.

  • PERFORMANCE - a key part of the afternoon’s activities is student performances. Already students from the Filipino, Pacific Islander and Africa teams are already practising. There’s also a rumour that staff might also share their talents! Student groups and/or individuals are welcome to perform. If, as a parent you’re reading this and want to be involved, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

  • FOOD - throughout the past years parents have been generous in arranging food stalls for the afternoon. The original idea of Multicultural Day was to provide “a taste” of our cultural diversity. This has grown to an incredible range of foods that are sold in support of our fundraising for the Delany Foundation.

  • FESTIVAL - there will be a range of activities throughout the afternoon including a jumping castle, face painting, competitions and stalls.

What should you do?

Come along, bring your family and friends and enjoy the afternoon with us. If you are able to cook something special that represents your culture, ask your child to let us know what to expect so we can prepare space and a sign.

Use this link to see the video highlights from the 2019 Multicultural day!

I look forward to seeing you at Delany’s 2021 Multicultural Day.

From Monday 31 May, and three weeks following, we will be inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.

We would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) survey. We value the role of parents and carers within our school community and greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to continue and strengthen the school/family partnership that further improves student learning and wellbeing at Delany College.

The survey is anonymous and will take a maximum of 20 minutes to complete. You will be able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device. Once the survey is activated we will send you the URL log in address via Skoolbag and Compass.

All students will also be invited to complete this survey. Participation by students is voluntary.  If you would like more information, or if you do not want your child to respond to this anonymous survey, please use this hyperlink for an explanation of the survey and an opt-out note that can be returned to the school.

I wrote in the last newsletter that the Compass parent portal is now available. We strongly recommend you use this app to access your child’s learning records. A full description of Compass and its features is available with this link to last week’s newsletter.

How do I activate the Parent Portal?

GET AN ACTIVATION CODE! Here’s what to do:

  • An email was automatically generated and sent to every parent who has not yet logged into the Compass Parent Portal. This will provide you with details about how to get the app and get started.

  • Contact the College. Please call the administration office (8633 8100) or send an email to delany@parra.catholic.edu.au and you can request an access code.

  • I urge all parents to access the Compass Parent Portal. This will become the key way in which we communicate with you about your child’s learning and pastoral journey through Delany College.

    St Patrick, pray for us.

    Mothers Day

A few weeks ago we had our Mothers Day celebration at Delany College. The morning began with a liturgy followed by a morning tea. Thank you to the students and staff who helped prepare the day. It was lovely to be able to celebrate the great blessing of our mothers with the community.

The Feast of Our Lady of Fatima

On the 13th May each year we commemorate the visions and miracles of Our Lady of Fatima. We particularly acknowledge Lucia Abobora, 9, and her cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, 6 and 7 on this day and their proclamation of faith to the world. These three young children teach us that, despite age, we can all be messengers of the faith. The article below provides more information about Our Lady of Fatima.

    Learning In Focus

As part of their Chemistry unit, Year 10 tested a range of common household substances with two of the most common indicators, litmus paper and universal indicator,  to categorise them as acidic or basic or neutral.

They first sorted the substances on the pH scale to predict how acidic or basic they might be, before testing them. They learned that blue means basic when using litmus paper and that universal indicator will give a more precise measure of how strong acids and bases really are.  Students then had the opportunity to reflect on their learning using the visible thinking routine 'think, puzzle, explore'

    PDSSSC Cross Country

On Friday 23 April, some of our athletically gifted Delany students participated in the PDSSSC Cross Country Carnival at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre in Horsley Park.

The twelve students who represented the College were:- Helena Singhdeo, Shannel Djan, Stella Fitzpatrick, Levi Henderson, Alvin Chris, Rylan Roebeck,  Jack Perrin, Antonio Chamoun, Sebastian Roughley, Jayson Nguyen, Jayden Taouk, Joshua Roughley.

By all accounts from the students it was a physically challenging day with students pushing themselves to their limits to try and get the highest place possible.

In races of roughly 60 students per race our competitors from Delany College placed between 17th and 31st on the day which overall is a positive outcome given that none of our students compete in Cross Country on a regular basis. Our students were rewarded with an impromptu trip past McDonalds on the way home as a reward for their efforts. We certainly have some gifted athletes at Delany!

Thanks once again to our student racers and a very special thank you as always to our bus driver Mr. Warren Johnson who also served as an official on the day ensuring the safety of all competitors in the PDSSSC schools.

The Helmsman Project - Year 10

The Helmsman project aims to build life skills and this incursion focussed on student knowledge about communication and goal setting to prepare them for their future. The day focussed on "my story, my team", allowing students to discover who their support system is and how their story is shaped by repeatedly  overcoming obstacles and never giving up. By reaching young people at such a critical point in their development, The Helmsman Project has the potential to make a difference in the lives of young people for many years into their bright futures.

The Helmsman Project - Year 9

On Tuesday 11 April, Year 9 students had the opportunity to participate in the Helmsman Project Workshop. The workshop focused on strategies to name goals, achieve goals and how to work as a team and build relationships to make our goals a reality. It was really inspiring to see some of the aspirations of our students and their deep desire to achieve the life goals they have set for themselves.

    Drone

The drone program is a first for Delany College in 2021 and we are proud to announce that we have had our first class on Tuesday the 27th. 6 willing students joined us after school to participate in the program, they learned the basics of flying a drone, the rules that come along with it and a short test to confirm their knowledge. Students had a glimpse of what it’s like to fly a drone on their first day.

Overall the Drone Program held after school was an exceptional learning experience, not only for the students but also for the IT team as they conduct and organise lessons for students whilst also learning to have fun and connect with them.

If you are interested in learning about drones and the basics of Aviation please email Mr. Simic or Mr. Isbilir.

Alternatively join our google classroom 5lvuqm3 and come along to our next class.

    Hope to see you there.

    Mr. Simic and Mr. Isbilir

    Vinnies Van

‘Vulnerable people will be deeply challenged by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.’

There are many experiences that senior students look forward to at Delany College, with the opportunity to volunteer for Vinnies Van placing high on this list. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 this experience for Delany students was suspended from March 2020. However, it is with great excitement that we are able to resume our regular shift at Vinnies Van.

The next shift is on Tuesday 25 May. May the students and teachers involved on the night provide friendship, compassion and dignity, in true Delany spirit, with the wider community.

    Library

In Week 2 of this Term we remembered ANZAC Day. With the assistance of Year 9 student, Daniel Thwaites, a book display was assembled in the Library highlighting various resources in our collection that deal with conflicts in which our country’s armed forces have been involved. We are also grateful to Harry Stephens from the Granville Historical Society,

who kindly lent us some flags and poppies for the display, and donated some copies of ‘Parramatta ANZACS at Gallipoli 1915’. This is a publication from Parramatta City Council containing photos and stories of soldiers’ and nurses’ experiences from 1914 to 1918. Three copies of this book will be added to the College Library collection. Lest we forget.

Updated Health Care Plans & Medical Information

If your child has any type of allergy or Asthma please make sure you have an updated Health Care Plan or Asthma Action Plan from your doctor.

Without this Health Care Plan the school can not provide the appropriate medical treatment should your child become ill. The school updates their Excursion Risk Assessments from the Health Care Plan you provide to the school.

If your child takes medication on a regular basis the school will also need a letter from your local doctor or specialist indicating the medications taken, recommended dosage and time of the day this medication is consumed.

This is to ensure that should your child need to be treated by an ambulance or doctor in an emergency situation, the school can provide the relevant details. Please hand in all Health Care Plans to the Administration office and request that the plan be passed onto Mrs Collimore.
