St Joseph's Catholic Primary School Wandal Newsletter

28 July 2021

From the Principal

Over the past week both and P and F and School Board have met. At last week’s P and F Meeting we looked at the Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Framework and the actions our school is taking in this space.  As well as having a targeted action plan to meet mental health and wellbeing goals, our school has a designated committee who meet to identify next steps. All teachers in this school have completed training modules, and of course we have designated staff, including our counsellor Charmian, whose main priority is gauging, and supporting the mental health of our students. We were joined at this meeting by local councillor Cherie Rutherford, and it was lovely to receive some ‘outside’ input into our discussions. The P and F are also busily preparing for our biggest fundraiser of the year, our High Tea which will be held 11th September at the Botanic Gardens.

Yesterday, we held a combined staff and School Board Meeting after school. The aim of this meeting was to look closely at the feedback we received form our recent student, staff, and parent satisfaction surveys. I was delighted to share with the group that we had received top ratings of ‘excellent’ in all four areas surveyed. Nevertheless, in a spirit of continual improvement and growth, we met to discuss areas of further development. We have established key themes which are worth further thought and investigation.  These areas will be worked through, and after further dialogue and deliberation, work their way into our strategic planning.

Learning Support 'Myths' (Part 1)

Something that has been reflected in recent conversations and data from our satisfaction surveys are that some particular ‘myths’ exist with relation to support that students receive in their classrooms. Often, people assume that children (including both those achieving below standard or above standard) do not receive additional support unless they have a diagnosis or disability. This is not accurate. Our teachers are continually trained and upskilled to cater to the individual needs of each and every child in their classroom, and to make adjustments and modifications as necessary. If you are unsure of the particular modifications and/or adjustments that your child may be receiving, please do not hesitate to ask your teachers for clarification. A significant amount of resourcing (time, money and personnel) is directed towards this area. In addition to our teaching staff, we contract a number of Speech Therapists on a weekly basis, as well as Occupational Therapists, Child Psychologists and other specialists, as needed. We have an extensive group of staff who are employed in various ways, all providing additional support to students.

Playgroup

It was delightful to see so many of our families at Monday’s Picnic on the Grass. I noticed that we have had somewhat of a ‘baby boom’ within our school community and thought I would once again extend the offer of a playgroup here at school to anyone who might be interested. In the past, families met to have a cuppa, and a play using the school facilities. If anyone would be interested in getting this going again, please let me know. We are happy to provide a space in which you can meet. This is a lovely way of building community and socialising for both parents and children who are not yet of school age.

Touch Football

Touch Football season is upon us. SJW has a long history of entering teams in this sport season. Before we call for players, we require coaches and managers for all age groups. Please let the school office know if you are interested. Thank you to the two parents who have registered their willingness to assist so far. We are looking for more volunteers from each year level Prep – Year 6 in order to organise teams. A number of people expressed their interest in more sporting opportunities for their children in their satisfaction surveys – here is your chance!

The Junior Competition will commence August 13/14 and will finish November 19/20. Registrations will close August 7.

Disco - tonight!

I am looking forward to seeing you at this evening’s disco, which will be held in the Quadrangle 5.30-7.00pm. Drinks and nibblies will be provided by our P and F for adults in the Tuckshop area, and a sausage sizzle, chips, and drinks available for our students. Please note that only cash will be taken for payments. COVID restrictions allow only our students and staff to be in the Quadrangle area, and adults will be encouraged to socially distance. Toilets for adult use during the event are the toilets located next to the tuck shop. Many thanks to the staff and parent volunteers who are helping to organise and run the disco, as a fundraiser for our Year 6 camp, as well as providing an enjoyable social gathering for us all.

Capras Cup - Under 10's Rugby League Team

Good luck to our Capras Cup (Under 10’s) Rugby League team who will compete this Saturday under the supervision of Mr Ivory. I thank Mr Ivory for giving up his Saturday to engage our younger players to play in this competition. Good luck team!

200 Years - Faith in the Future of Catholic Education in Australia

Almighty and all-loving God, with gratitude for the endeavours of Catholic education in the past, with confidence in our Catholic pre-schools, schools and universities today, and with faith in their continuing contribution in the future, we celebrate 200 years of Catholic education in this Great South Land.

As our Heavenly Father, we thank you for your providential care for your children in this land in inspiring priests, religious and lay people to found and staff our schools in ages past. Through them the Good News of your Son was brought to the young even in colonial times – and ever since.

As Christ the Teacher, you grace the staff and leaders of Catholic education today. As they build on the achievements of their predecessors direct them in their present efforts to ensure that every young Australian has the opportunity for an excellent education and formation in faith.

As our Inspiring Spirit, you lead us into the future. In the century ahead grant those teaching and learning in our schools, those planning and leading, and the families and community that entrust their young people to us, a love of learning and a willingness to be the face of Christ in the world of tomorrow.

Pour out your abundant blessings upon all involved in the ministry of Catholic education.

Amen.

Our Lady of the Southern Cross – pray for us.

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Patron of Catholic Education in Australia – pray for us.

Year Three Prayer Assembly

Please join both Year Three classes this Friday morning in the Undercover Area at 8.35 am. We will be celebrating Catholic Education Week.

Catholic Education Week Celebrations

This week marks 200 years since the first Catholic school opened in Parramatta.  This is a wonderful historical event for our students to celebrate 200 years of Catholic Education.

During the week students celebrated Catholic Education Week within their classrooms.  The annual Picnic on the Grass was a joy filled school community event.  Thank you to the parents and grandparents who joined us for the picnic.

A reminder that the disco will be held tonight from 5.30pm to 7.00pm and parents are welcome to join the P and F in the Undercover area for nibblies and drinks.

On Friday, Year 3 will lead prayer celebrating Catholic Education Week.  During assembly we will present the Spirit of Catholic Education awards acknowledging both staff and students who model Christ-like values within our school.

On Friday, after Prayer Assembly, our students from Prep - Year 2 will celebrate Under 8's Day.

Thank you for joining us to help celebrate Catholic Education Week by attending our annual 'Picnic on the Grass'.

Year 2 have created and sent posters to the Australian Paralympic Team to be displayed in the Athletes’ Village In Tokyo

Grandparents' Day

On July 26th, the Church celebrates Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary, our Blessed Mother, and the grandparents of Jesus. We actually don’t know much about these two special parents and grandparents and what we do know about them comes to us through legend and tradition.  We took the opportunity to celebrate our Grandparents and thank them for being a special part of our lives.  We were overjoyed to have so many grandparents join us for prayer and stay for morning tea.  Thank you Year 1A for leading such a heartfelt prayer.

Disco Fundraiser for Year 6 Camp

On Wednesday 28 July from 5.30 - 7.00 pm we will host a disco in the Quadrangle.  All funds raised will be donated to our Year Six students, who will be attending a Leadership Camp at Chaverim (Bunderberg) in the coming weeks.

Upon arrival, each student's name will be recorded and parents will be required to sign their children out at the conclusion of the disco.  A $2 sausage sizzle will be available for those students who wish to purchase something extra to eat.

If parents would like to stay and socialise for the duration of the disco, the P and F have kindly offered to organise nibblies. Drinks will be available to purchase.

To ensure we adhere to the latest COVID requirements, whilst making this an enjoyable and safe event, parents who do stay will be required to check in using the QLD Government App and remain in  the Undercover Area for the duration of the disco.

We are delighted to be hosting a disco this term!

Year Six Camp News

Year Six Camp is less than two weeks away! Have you signed and returned the medical permision form?  Please contact classroom teachers if you have any further questions regarding camp.

Please ensure the $400 camp fee is paid in full before we depart on the 10th August. If you wish to arrange a payment plan, please contact the office and we can assist you with this matter.

If you anticipate the cost of Year Six Camp to be difficult, please contact Mrs Kellie Jenkinson to make alternate arrangements.

After our fundraising efforts at the disco, should the cost of our excursion be reduced then we will credit the remaining funds to end of year graduation expenses.

Thought of the Week

The wellbeing of children and young people is enhanced and their learning outcomes optimised when they feel connected to others and experience safe and trusting relationships. Students who feel connected, safe and secure are more likely to be active participants in their learning and to achieve better physical, emotional, social and educational outcomes.

(Australian Student Wellbeing Framework, 2018).
