Principal's Report

Welcome to Term 1 week 10,

We hope that this Newsletter edition finds you well.

Whilst Term 1 is now all but done, we have had a very big past few weeks here at Wyong.

Our Principal Mr Miladinovic has taken on the role of relieving Director of Educational Leadership until the end of term 2, with Mrs Arnot taking his role for the duration.

We have the NSW Mobile Health Dental Clinic on site, doing maintenance check ups on eligible children, its great to see so many getting their teeth checked and coming out with beautiful big smiles. The van will be on site until the end of term.

On Tuesday the 9th March, Domino’s Tuggerah collaborated with us to raise some funds for the school. $1 from every pizza sold on that day, went back to the school. We ended up raising $342 which is phenomenal, thanks to all the families that supported that effort and to Dominos as well.

Monday the 22nd March our wonderful Wyong students came together to celebrate Harmony Day. A virtual assembly was held between our classes, having students teaching us how to say hello in other languages, whilst we also discussed the importance of being inclusive to all. Thank you to everyone who wore an orange accessory to show their support and for the beautiful art work in the corridor.

Wednesday the 24th we as a school, received the Aboriginal Message stick from our local Tacoma Public School. This significant event was marked with a whole school assembly and the playing of the didgeridoos. The Message Stick will make its way through the classrooms before being passed on.

Our wonderful Leadership team visited the ICG in Sydney on the 25th March with Mrs Turner and Mrs Carter for the National Young leaders Conference. These lucky students got to hear from some very influential and well-known people sharing their secrets to success.

To start this week of we held the Annual School Cross Country. The weather was fabulous and the kids all had a fantastic time participating. Well done to all that took part and tried their best, and congratulations to those that took out places. A huge thank you to the staff as well that co-ordinated this it is a lot of work but well worth it.

This amazing morning was followed up in the afternoon with a whole school assembly to recognize our Swimming Carnival champions and our Brian Hilton Award winners, amongst class awards. Congratulations to all of our award recipients.

Lastly, we celebrated Easter by holding our annual Easter Hat parade on Tuesday afternoon. For the first time since Covid we were finally allowed parents back on site to join in the fun. Our wonderful K-2 students had designed their hats in their classrooms and there were some amazing creations. They then got the opportunity to parade around with their class and show off their designs. Was so lovely to see so many smiles and beautiful behaviour.

Focusing on next term, we have stage 3 going on their trip to Canberra from the 21st-23rd April, this is very exciting for the students and we look forward to hearing all about it upon their return.

With today being the last day of term we wish you all a very happy and safe Easter break and we look forward to seeing all the students back, smiling and ready for a big Term 2 on Tuesday the 20th April, 2021.

Harmony Day 2021

On the 22/3/2021 Wyong Public School celebrated Harmony Day with our virtual assembly. At Wyong we have students of different cultural backgrounds, 6 of which are; Korean, Fillippino, Japanese, Mauri, Auslan and Aboriginal.

Students with these backgrounds said “hello” in their second language. We then went on to explain what Harmony Day really means ( all cultures coming together). Our School Captain Lucy then had a quiz and some interesting facts about Harmony Day. Henry then stated how we can show inclusiveness in school and out of school. Finally the School Captains then concluded our virtual assembly.

National Young Leaders Conference 2021

Last Thursday 25th March, the Year Six Leadership Team went down to Sydney for the National Young Leaders Day. We met Jimmy Rees (known as Jimmy Giggle) and he told us about his family and how he became the host of Giggle and Hoot on ABC Kids.We also listened to Lachie Smart - he holds the world record for the youngest person to fly around the world solo, he was only 18!

Next was Anastasia Woolmer, who is Australia's two-time memory champion! She chose a girl from the audience who got up on the stage and told her a page full of numbers. Anastasia repeated them back all without looking, not only forward but backward too! She told us how numbers go together and make sense to her. It was interesting as she never was good at maths but she just practised every day.

David Campbell also presented on stage - his dad is the famous Rockstar, Jimmy Barnes. His mum and dad were teen parents and they didn’t know what to do, so he grew up with his grandmother. His grandmother never told him who his parents were. When he found out he struggled with wanting to do what he loved, singing, but also worried about always being second best to his dad. He was chosen to go to England and model, but he didn’t like modelling so he came back to Australia, and started his singing career which led him to Broadway in New York City. He is now known as a tv host of Today Extra and an author of a children's book called ‘Stupid Carrots’.

A big thanks to Mrs Turner and Mrs Carter who braved the early start so we could attend such an inspiring and motivating day.
