Issue 13: Wednesday, 4th August 2021

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

This week our school is celebrating NAIDOC Week.  NAIDOC Week is a hugely significant marker in the Australian calendar and an especially important one for Indigenous communities around the country. It's a week to celebrate Indigenous culture and heritage, commemorate 65,000 years of history, unify communities, and educate and share stories with all of the nation.

During this week our children will be involved in a range of activities that include:

•           NAIDOC Assemblies on Tuesday and Wednesday.

•           Sand art activities.

•           Lunchtime opportunities for face-painting and bracelet making.

Our sincere thanks go to Ms Mippy who did a wonderful job in organising the week for us.

WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY

Yesterday we had around 60 Year 5&6 children participating in Write a Book in a Day.  This is a fun, creative and collaborative competition for students in years 5 to 12 and adult writing groups. Teams of up to ten have just twelve hours to write and illustrate a book from start to finish. Digital editions of the completed stories are made available on the Online Library and shared with hospitals across Australia.

We thank Mrs Weir for organising this school activity and Mr Wickham for his great support in what was a very long but successful day!!

WAGSMS SCHOOL CHOIR PERFORMANCE

Our Senior Choir is performing in the Western Australian Government Schools Music Society Schools Make Music Concert Night at Crown Theatre on Monday, 9th August.  Ms Cheong is doing a great job working with this group of children and I’m sure this will be a terrific experience for everyone.  Our thanks also go to the families of the choir members for their on-going support.

PARKING NEAR OUR SCHOOL

It is important to keep in mind that schools are busy areas, where there are often lots of children, many of whom do not always understand the danger of roads and vehicles. Make sure to take extra care when parking on school grounds and on the roads and streets around the school and follow the signed parking rules at all times. Please note that the City of Kwinana will issue infringement notices for those who fail to follow these directions.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY

A reminder to all families that our next School Development Day is on Monday, 23rd August (Week 6) children do not attend school.

Have a wonderful fortnight.

FROM THE DEPUTIES DESK

Student Attendance

The Education Department classifies attendance as:

Regular 90 - 100%
At Risk - indicated80 - 89%
At Risk - moderate60 - 79%
At Risk - severe0 - 59%

Consistent attendance and participation at school are essential factors in achieving social and academic learning outcomes. In order to give your child the best chance of success, the school supports families and encourages children to attend on a regular basis.

While there may be circumstances which prevent your child attending school, the Education Act requires parents to ensure their child is attending on a daily basis.

Unexplained Absence notes for Term 1, 2 Week 1 Term 3 have now gone home. There are a large number of Unexplained Absences for Term 2 (and a small number for Term 1). If you receive a note asking you to explain an absence, please complete and return the slip as a matter of importance. If you would like support in getting your child to school, or maintaining regular attendance, please chat to your child’s teacher or one of the deputies.

Write a Book in a Day

What an amazing day we had yesterday with 8 teams of Year 5 & 6 students writing and illustrating an original story for children in hospital as participants in Write a Book in a Day for The Kids' Cancer Project.

Our kids displayed their Bertram FRREE behaviour for 12 hours, working as a team to produce 8 beautiful picture books.

A HUGE thank you to Mr Wickham for being there all day, supporting our students and keeping them on track.

Books had to be uploaded by 9:00pm and we couldn’t have done it without Mrs Finnis’ tech savvy and persistence - and Mrs Ware & Mrs Tuckfield who stayed on until all books were submitted.

We appreciate all the staff and parents who called in to keep us going, cooked sausages, supplied snacks, cleaned up, cut up onions and came out in the freezing cold to collect their tired writers.

A special shout out to all our teams’ sponsors - the funds are still coming in and the links will remain live until August 31st. Your contributions will help make treatment and the outlook for children with cancer more positive.

We are proud of each and every one of you.

Interschool Cross Country

Good luck to all our runners at this week’s Interschool Cross Country at Thomas Oval. It has been an interrupted lead up to this event, with very wet weather impacting on training but we are sure you will give your very best and display your Bertram FRREE behaviours.

With best wishes
