Principal's Message

Dear Community

This fortnight, I would like to start by commending our wonderful students (and staff!) for completing a very successful fortnight of swimming lessons in what were often less than desirable weather conditions. Our students showed an amazing level of engagement throughout, demonstrating our school value of commitment - something that wasn’t always easy on 16 degree rainy days. Well done everybody!

Cyber Safety Workshop for Parents

Many of you would have seen yesterday’s Skoolbag post informing you of an upcoming cyber safety event for parents. After general feedback from the P&C and School Board, along with many anecdotal conversations with parents, it is evident that there is a desire for guidance around how to best support our children in an ever-changing digital environment. In response, our Chaplain has sourced a two-hour information session for parents to help provide some information and answer some of your questions. This has been fully funded by the P&C, making it free for those wishing to attend. Places are strictly limited to 25, so get in quick. Information about the session, along with how to RSVP is available in the flyer below.

If there are high levels of interest, we will look at running further sessions next year.

Homework Policy

Thank you to all the people who completed the homework survey over the last two weeks. The high number of responses mean that we have a valuable snapshot into our community’s thoughts on this topic. I can tell you the responses were extremely varied! Staff and the Board will now consider these and revise our current policy ready for the start of 2022. Watch this space!

School Board Meeting

The next Board meeting will be held next Wednesday, 10 November, from 6.00pm in the art room. Some of the main topics for discussion include

  • Discussion around the Homework Policy
  • An update on planning for 2022, including capital works projects
  • A snapshot of the 2021 NAPLAN results
  • Board tenures and vacant positions for 2022

All of our meetings are open, so if you are interested in finding out what they are all about, please RSVP to Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au.

After School Toilet Access

School toilets are not available for use after 3:15pm each day. Our cleaners are busy at work after this time, often using chemicals and mopping floors which creates an unsafe environment. Please do not approach our staff to ask to use the toilets as we do not wish to offend by declining your request.

As always, if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to call or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au

The Salvation Army - Food and Gifts Christmas Appeal

2021 has been a difficult year for communities across Australia. As Christmas approaches – it is becoming increasingly clear that many Australians are going to struggle to have even a modest celebration.

We all know Christmas is a time for joy. But for those doing it tough – it is often challenging, heartbreaking and isolating. Every Christmas, The Salvation Army provides around 160,000 meals and over 64,000 hampers and vouchers to individuals and families in need. As COVID-19 continues to impact individuals, families and communities across the country, your support now is more important than ever. By donating food or gifts, you can help us make sure we leave no one in need this festive season.

Scarborough Primary School is collecting food and gifts for the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. If you would like to donate items towards the appeal please bring them into the front office and place them under the Christmas tree.

Q. Can I donate gift vouchers?

A. Yes! We really appreciate and, in some cases, prefer gift vouchers. Gift vouchers mean a parent doesn't miss out on the joy of purchasing a gift for their child. Gift vouchers are also an ideal gift for teenagers.

Q. Can I wrap the items I donate?

A. No, please do not wrap gifts. This allows parents the special experience of choosing gifts for their child's unique personalities and interests. Feel free to include wrapping paper or a gift bag for parents to use.

Q. Can I donate good quality used items?

A. No, please only donate new items. Please remember, the gift you donate may be the only present someone receives this Christmas. We know Christmas isn't only about receiving gifts, but this is one way we can help families feel special. Your nearest Salvos Store would gladly receive your good quality pre-loved gifts.

P&C News

Hello SPS families!

As the year is slowly winding down, the P&C will hold their final meeting of this year on Monday 15 November at 6.30pm in the school library. This meeting will focus on the school’s wish list, i.e. what items the P&C will fund for 2022. We invite all parents and carers of our school community to join us at this meeting as we will be voting on these items.

We also like to remind everyone that our P&C is always looking for volunteers, to help in Canteen, Uniform Shop and our other fundraising activities.

We rely on volunteers to help out in Canteen and the Uniform Shop, in order for us to keep our prices low. We have however noticed that the number of volunteers are dropping, to the extent that we are having to consider alternative options to keep them running. If this happens, it would mean that uniform prices will increase significantly. Canteen prices would also increase or we could potentially lose this service… As a P&C we would not like to see these alternatives implemented and we therefore ask YOU (parents/ grandparents/ carers/ families) to help out, please.

If you can help for one or two Friday's this term for around 2 hours (ideally 11.00am to 1.00pm) please text Laura 0419 935 690 or email lauraykos@hotmail.com, thank you.

The Uniform Shop is open on Wednesdays between 8.45am-9.15am and is in need of assistance as well. Express your interest through email, come to a meeting or chat to Sarah at the Uniform Shop on Wednesday.

Containers for Change

We will continue to fundraise through the Containers for Change initiative. The Containers for Change bins can be found at the school entry at Hinderwell Street near the Room 9 Heritage Building. Keep on bringing those empty cans and bottles to support the P&C!

Please note that these bins are not for rubbish but for eligible empty drink containers only, thank you!

Alternatively, if you wish to donate at a refund point of your choosing you can quote our Scheme ID C10240685. If you prefer to attend a Reverse Vending Machine location please use the barcode at the top of the P&C news. This may be your preference if you have a larger donation and be rest assured that the money goes back to the P&C.
