Henley Beach Primary School Newsletter

Term 4 week 4 - Wednesday 3 November 2021

From the Principal

School Improvement Planning

This Friday we have our final staff training and development day for the year. The focus of the day will be on writing where we will look to build upon existing teaching practices occurring across the school. An information session will be facilitated by the Brightpath Writing team that will cover the structure of different types of sentences and how they can be taught. Following this, staff will work on developing policy documents that will support the consistent teaching of writing across the school.

Writing has been a prominent area of focus within the school’s Site Improvement Plan, which we are currently reviewing. The 3 year cycle of the existing Site Improvement Plan concludes at the end of 2021 so we are looking to establish what the teaching and learning priorities in Literacy and Numeracy will look like for the next 3 year period. These decisions will be based on extensive analysis of student achievement data, teacher professional learning needs and a review of the progress made towards existing priorities.

2022 Reception Transition Visits

On Tuesday we held our first visit from next year’s intake of Reception students. A series of 3 weekly visits have been scheduled which will help this group of children become familiar with our school environment. It was great to see their enthusiasm and excitement during their first experience of school life.

School of Languages

Next year the School of Languages will be offering, providing there is sufficient interest, an R-6 Japanese program at our school. The lessons will be offered on Mondays from 3.10-4.40pm. An information for interested families will be held Tuesday 16 November, 5.30-6.30pm in the gym.

The School of Languages is a government school established in 1986 to offer language learning, aligned to the Australian Curriculum, that complements and supplements language programs in mainstream schools and ethnic schools. They offer 23 languages after hours, in various locations around the metropolitan area to over 2,000 students from all schooling sectors.

End of year school concert

We are working towards a whole school end of year concert on Tuesday 30 November. Details will come out soon.

Staffing News

Vicky Jones has been appointed to the position of Deputy Principal position at West Beach Primary School from the beginning of 2022. During her time at Henley Beach PS Vicky has made a strong contribution to the school community and we wish her all the best in this new role.

Use of school grounds after dismissal time

A valued aspect of our school environment is the opportunity for students and their families to be on the school grounds after dismissal time in the afternoons. Unfortunately there has been a number of occasions when unsupervised children (primary and upper year levels) have not behaved appropriately or made safe decisions. Our schools grounds are utilised by OSHC, families and sporting organisations therefore it is an expectation that all children who are on the school grounds after 3.10pm are supervised by an adult and if not accompanied by an adult, behave in a responsible manner. Children will be directed off the site by staff for any instances of inappropriate behaviour. If your child does visit the school after hours we would appreciate you reinforcing the importance of playing safely and being respectful of others.

Term 4 Swimming Lessons

A reminder that the swimming lessons for Reception to Yr 5 students will occur in week 7 this term, Mon 22 Nov – Fri 26 Nov. Please contact the front office or your child’s class teacher if further information is required.

Friday 29 October was World Teachers day

Last Friday was World Teachers Day. This was a great opportunity to reflect on the powerful and influential role teachers have on the development of young people, as learners and as a person. Teaching is both an incredible privilege and responsibility. Staff at Henley Beach strive to do their best to support our students and to provide a safe and productive environment for learning.

Wellbeing Leader - Dr Donna

Congratulations to Indi, Connor, Isaak and Olivia for organising their very successful Backpack 4 Kids event.  Thanks to the generosity of the HBPS community, we filled an SUV with items which were delivered to the support group last week.  It was a great idea from our students which started with concern for our recent Afghan refugees.  Well done and thanks to all involved!

Please keep an eye out for notices about our Christmas fundraiser/donation event for St Vincent de Paul in the next newsletter.

Our students have become very creative in their Student Voice initiatives.  A quick scan of other recent and ongoing activities finds these examples:

  • the successful completion of the Rubik's Cube Speed Competition.  Prizes for this event will be presented in three categories at assembly in Week 5.
  • the commencement of a bookmaking competition that runs from Week 4 to Week 6 that has been organised by three Year 3 students.
  • the establishment of a lunchtime Art Club, also initiated by some Year 3 students.
By now, you have heard a few times about the successful video entry to the Healthy Bones competition.  At our last assembly, HBPS hosted Professor Fitbones from the Healthy Bones Foundation who presented us with our prize a $500.00 voucher for new sports equipment.  Professor Fitbones and her offsider from the Foundation were most impressed by the quality of our winning entry, the beautiful singing of our school choir and the general behaviour/responsiveness of our students during assembly.

Media Concern

Some of you may be aware of the Netflix series Squid Games. Squid Games is a South Korean Netflix series where characters compete in well-known children’s games with sometimes extreme and violent outcomes. There are reports that children at some schools have been acting out these games in the school yard and on Social Media platforms. The series is rated MA 15+ in Australia. Under the government’s classifications and advisory category, children under the age of 15 may not legally watch, buy or hire MA 15+ rated material unless they are in the company of a parent or adult guardian.

If your child/ren have not seen the series it is possible they have seen aspects of it on social media. If they have seen the series or aspects of it, we encourage you to monitor their reactions and engage in open and honest conversations about the content and their online activity.

If this series has triggered any concerns for your child/ren, the following supports are available:

Kids helpline: 1800 55 1800
