Alawa Primary School Newsletter

Welcome to the Alawa Primary School weekly newsletter.

Principal Updates

Well what a week!

Our annual Sports Day was again a huge success made possible by so many helping out. The excitement, the energy, the physical efforts and the team spirit all shone through. Our House Captains did a terrific job of encouraging their teams.

Congratulations to Manton for taking the Shield [by 4 points ONLY], the Parents team for scooping the Alawa Cup from the teachers and the Age Champions - see below in the newsletter for all the details.

Huge thanks to the planning team led by Mr Steve Trezise and Mrs Amanda Lane along with Ms Flor, Mr Henderson, Ms Bernardino, Ms Tammy and Ms Tamra. Mr Michael did a very good job painting our track - his first time!

Extra huge thanks to the parents who came long from 7am to help set up, to all those who helped at events  through the day or with the cafe and helped with pack up. Another example of the Alawa Community all pulling together to ensure we can have such fantastic events.

Staff Recognition and Appreciations

Have you appreciated the efforts of any of our staff this year and would like to acknowledge them?

Please see below for details on how you can go about this.

It is that time of year again for the Teaching in the NT Awards.

It does mean a lot to the team when they are appreciated for all that they do for your families.

Last 2 weeks of Term

So as we roll on through we still have lots planned and learning is still fully in place in classrooms. Next week the whole school will be investigating all things about paddle pop stick for Maths while the Year 5/6's head off on Camp to Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre.

Attendance is still expected right through unless unwell.

We also require students to be in full school uniform, hair neatly tied, pinned back and no jewellery other than simple studs or sleepers in pierced ears.

Trivia Night

Due to the business of the dry season and just how crazy all our lives must be we had very little uptake for this new event. It is cancelled for Friday 18th June.

Huge thanks though to Steph Cockfield and the team who put so much into the planning. We hope to offer this again at a later date which will be discussed at School Council Monday night.

Students: Do you read the newsletter?

If you are a student in Years 3-6 and you are reading this great job!

Shoot me an email to let me know what day next week we will be holding our Attendance Reward session and what it will be.

Assistant Principal Updates

Welcome to Week 9!

Last week we had our final Bootcamp session before our Sports day. We wanted to make sure we were all ready for the big day, so we finished with a practice of our sprints. But not far away, we could hear that there were complaints coming from the Farm from someone who thought they were missing out on the fun.….so what did we do?????? Well the only thing we could do…..we went out to go and get our dear friend Barbra and include her in the fun… Barbra got to race the house captains in the Sprint. I was a bit worried she would have to be dragged to the finish line as she loves the nice green grass. But she took off like a shot. This sheep is no follower. Ms Nellie hung on tight for the first 10 metres and it was neck and neck….but Barbra just knew what she had to do. She modelled absolutely superb form. She stayed in her lane, ran right through the finish line without stopping and no one held her back. What a star student we have at Alawa….I can’t wait for the Dance Night…

Attendance award

On Thursday in Week 10 we will be organising a reward for those students whose attendance has been 90% and above and with no more than 5 lates. These students will be able to watch a PG or G rated movie on cushions and beanbags while munching on popcorn. Thankyou to all parents and carers for supporting your children to arrive at school ready for learning.

Genevieve Donohue, [Assistant Principal]

Special Assembly: Friday 18th June 9am

This Friday from 9am we will be holding a special assembly in the library with  special guest Sara Storer. Sara is an Australian Country Music singer-songwriter and former school teacher. Sara will be working with students through Term 3 to create our own songs for our whole school performance night planned for Thursday 2nd September.

We will also be celebrating our next Honour Distinction Award Winner Miss Asha Hughes who will be Principal for the day after receiving 100 merits!

Classroom news - Year 2 Bernardino

Preschool news

Our five big beautiful chickens have left the building! After five weeks of watching them grow and change they have moved to the Farm where the children will visit them every week when their preschool group explores the farm. If you visit the farm look out for the littlest chooks wandering around and getting used to their new home. We will miss the chickens at Preschool but what an amazing experience it has been to follow their growth and development and get to care for them as a preschool community.

Preschool children had a great time on sports day. They took part in running races, the egg and spoon race and the very funny three legged race (which left lots of children giggling). The Pre-schoolers were very excited to be part of this fun event, proudly wearing their house colours and getting into the sports day spirit.

Have a lovely week,

Alice, Emma, Kelly and Flor  [Preschool Team]

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each day we allocate class points during Muster time recognizing those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

In Week 8 Term 2, the class with the most points was... Year 4/5 France!

Twice a week we tally up all students water bottles and students receive a house point for each one brought in.

In the lead for Term 2 we have Finnis with 1887 points!!

Sporting Star....

Year 6 student Harper Rush was recently named in the U12 Darwin Region Cricket team. Ms Tamra caught up with Harper to hear all about it.

"In Week 9 I will be going to Marrara from Wednesday to Friday to play cricket against lots of other teams. I am most exited about playing on a turf pitch and getting to play against all the other regions. I have some friends in the team as well so it should be fun! "

We look forward to hearing all about the competition and how Harper goes. Congratulations Harper, we know you will do Alawa and your family proud!
