St Patrick's Marist College

Newsletter - Number 1 - February 5, 2021

From the Principal ....

Welcome to the start of the 2021 school year to all members of our community. I extend a very warm welcome to our new families and staff who have joined our St Patrick’s Marist College Dundas Family. We have had a wonderful start to 2021. There is such a positive energy both within and outside the learning spaces and our new Year 7 students have settled in really well. They are a kind, friendly, confident and enthusiastic group.

I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday break, despite not being able to see all of our family during Christmas and venturing interstate or overseas as we have always done in the past. Rather than hearing exciting stories of new adventures, we have talked more about opportunities to slow down, re-energise, and visit local places around Sydney that we may never have considered or known about.

During our first assembly I reminded students that individually and collectively we set the tone of our College, we are and strive always to be a safe, inclusive and respectful community. We understand that bullying, harassment, racism and discrimination are not accetable in any circumstance. We are a school where every teacher believes in every student, believes not only that they are  good people, but also that we recognise that people make mistakes, poor judgment can happen, but we believe they can learn and grow through the experience. We want our students to walk into a classroom believing that their teacher is seeing them with fresh eyes, in a new year.

This year our College Learning goal is about developing students as learners, building student efficacy and expertise, helping them to develop a more active role in their learning. Learning is a mutually shared experience between teachers and students.

Efficacy is a student’s ability to take full responsibility for their learning and being able to support others in their learning. It means that students have clarity about the learning intentions and the success criteria and they are able to articulate where they are in their current understanding and performance against these. To be able to answer the questions, Where am I going?  Where am I now? and what is next? I reminded students that it is not about an assessment task, it is about their learning everyday.

Efficacy is about understanding the kind of dispositions, thinking/habits that students need to improve their learning, what to do when they get stuck, what strategies will enhance/help them in their learning. Finally it is about collaboration. Understanding what collaboration really means. Knowing the expectations of collaborative group work, doing their part, being a critical friend who is hard on content and soft on the person, learning how to give and receive accurate feedback. Educational research strongly supports formative assessment and feedback as playing key roles to success.

This year we will work with students on addressing team members who are not meeting the expectations of the group. Ultimately students who fail to contribute may be asked to do a task on their own.

I remind everyone about the College expectations clearly outlined in the diary including:

  • Tolerance and respect

  • Being ready to learn and to be active in that learning

  • School procedures

  • Rights and responsibilities

  • Banned substances (refer page 9 of the College Diary)

As always you can never cover every instance, however we are very clear about meeting the College’s expectations and standards, which align with our core Marist values of Love of Work, Simplicity, Family Spirit, Presence and most importantly acting in the Way of Mary with strong minds and gentle hearts.

Swimming Carnival:

Another awesome SPMC Swimming Carnival, while a little quieter than usual with the restrictions around cheering. I could not be prouder of our students. Their enthusiasm, participation and respect for themselves, each other and the environment were outstanding. A very special thankyou to Mr James for his organisation of the day and to the parents and families who attended.

Our Year 12 House Captains exemplified all that we wish to see in our College leaders. Their house performances were creative and entertaining and they rallied students to participate.

Congratulations to Paul for taking first place in the carnival and to Ludovic on winning the Spirit Cup.

Concerns or Complaints:

From time to time you may have a concern or complaint. I encourage you to contact the College so it can be resolved as soon as possible. For subject specific matters contact the relevant Leader of Learning KLA, for general or Wellbeing concerns the relevant Leader of Learning Pastoral or a member of the College Leadership Team.  Names and information can be found on page 1 of the College Diary. The complaints policy and other policies can be found on our website.

Parking

Our afternoons on Kirby Street are very congested, it is important that we always obey the traffic and parking rules, not only providing good role modelling for our students as future drivers, but ensuring we maintain the positive and respectful relationships in our community and the safety of our students. There are very clear no parking signs. We have always had a very positive relationship with our neighbours and would like to ensure this continues. There is supervision in the bus bay until 3:45.  If it is not essential that you pick up at 3:15, coming a little later will ease the congestion.

Upcoming Meetings:

A reminder that our Parents and Friends meeting (7.30 pm) will be held following the Year 7 Parent Information Evening (6-7 pm) on the 23rd February which will be held in the Harrington Courtyard.

School Fees:

It is almost time for Term 1 school fees to be sent out. We have attempted to include all costs throughout the year to the schools fees, which helps for the costs to be spread over the year. There are a small number of exemptions including fundraising for Caritas and our College Walkathon, please see the Fees Schedule for more information. There is further information regarding fees in this newsletter.

A reminder of the Diocesan policy regarding a student leaving the College during the year. A term's notice (10 school weeks) in writing must be given to the Principal before the removal of a student or a full term's fees will be payable. The notice can be given any time during the term for the next term. If at any time you find yourself in difficulties with the school fees please contact our Fees Secretary Ms Rolla Wadih or myself as soon as possible.

Assistant Principal - Innovation, Teaching and Learning

Welcome back to the new school year. It has been a busy and exciting start back for both staff and students. I would like to thank the community for their warm welcome as I take on this role in 2021. It is wonderful to be a part of such a vibrant Marist learning community.

As a learning community we continue to be committed to growing our students to be lifelong learners who are experts in their studies and are active in their learning. The new agile learning spaces are part of developing the 21st century skills that universities and employers desire in our graduates; collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, initiative and communication amongst others. Our teachers are excited to be part of this and are finding innovative ways of using the spaces to the benefit of your sons and daughters.

Our learning focus for this year centres on the third of the three C’s: Clarity, Challenge, Culture. Working together, teachers and students will build a culture of learning driven by high expectations. We expect students to come prepared to class, prepared to learn and wanting to learn.  It begins with simple things like having the right equipment needed to learn ready for class, looking for opportunities to engage in the classroom, working with peers and teachers, setting clear goals and working towards them.

A key part of building this culture is clear expectations concerning homework - its purpose and usefulness. Homework is an essential part of your child’s learning. It provides an opportunity for revision and consolidation of ideas encountered in the classroom and/or preparation for new and deeper learning. I ask for your support in ensuring that your son/daughter completes homework each night. There is no such thing as ‘no homework’. Time can be given to preparing for assessment tasks, extension reading or preparing study notes. In working with us in this area, you are supporting our culture of high expectations.

STATE TRANSIT

The school year has commenced and there has been changes made to some bus routes and timetables across the Willoughby, Ryde and parts of Parramatta were introduced on Sunday, 24 January to improve the frequency of services on key routes.

While there were no specific changes to school services, some students may need to change their current travel patterns to and from school on normal route services. For specific service details please go to https://transportnsw.info/news/2021/additional-bus-services-service-changes.

In addition, we encourage you to advise parents, caregivers and students to plan their trip ahead of travel at transportnsw.info

Highlights of Changes

As part of these changes, customers in the area will benefit from more than 700 extra weekly services while State Transit operates the most efficient network possible. Additional services will be supported by the introduction of new all-day frequent services operating every 10 minutes, seven days a week between both West Ryde and Chatswood to the City.

The all-day frequent network and extra weekly bus services will improve customer access to bus service in the local area and the City.

Changes to some bus routes and timetables, design to support the new all day frequent network, all for better connection to other modes of public transport. To help reduce duplication on the network, some routes are being replaced with new routes or extra services on other routes. In some cases, some existing routes will be shortened but retain their current route numbers.

A key change is the introduction of new all-day frequency services operating every 10 minutes across most of the day, seven days a week:

  • Route 120 – Chatswood to City
  • Route 500X – West Ryde to City

Wellbeing

Year 7

Our 2026 Graduates have survived their first full week of high school at St Patrick's Marist College!

The students have had an extremely busy start, with several assemblies, talks by different leaders of the College and the swimming carnival. It was fantastic to see so many students competing in the pool and a big congratulations to the carnival winners, Paul. Year 7 have become involved in the regular high school life activities including; homeroom, different subject lessons, peer support (not being the leaders!) and full school assemblies.

The students seem very settled and always have big smiles each and every day. More to come I’m sure!

They’re all looking fantastic in their summer uniform and take such pride in their presentation. Boys need to ensure that they wear a belt every day with their school uniform. Sport uniform requires students to have runners that are predominantly white.

A reminder that our Parent Information Night is the 23rd February, starting at 6pm. Please put this date in your diary as it is important that all parents/guardians attend.

All notes should have been returned for camp and the start of the year. We still have a few outstanding notes if you could ensure this is fixed by Monday it would be greatly appreciated.

Please ensure that you and your child have read and signed the front of the diary by Monday. It is important that all correspondence is returned in a timely manner. Students still have a vaccination form that needs to be returned by the end of Week 3.

These workshops are not region specific and will cater for any NSW parents, grandparents or full time carers. We encourage parents/carers to register via the information in the flyers or on the Positive Partnerships homepage: https://www.positivepartnerships.com.au/

Duke of Edinburgh Awards

The Duke of Edinburgh Awards is all about empowering young people to explore their own potential and get outside their comfort zones.  The award gives participants the ability to do this by getting involved with a physical activity, learning new skills, and giving back to their community.  A feeling of independence and personal achievement comes from connecting with real hope and getting out into the world.  We learn the most about ourselves when we are challenged both physically and mentally.

The College is partnering with YouthAdvance to deliver the Award, with the 2021 intake for:

  • Bronze Award:  entry-level being available to students with a minimum age of 14 years.
  • Silver Award: entry-level being available to students with a minimum age of 15 years.

For all interested students who are already 14 years and over or who are turning 14 in 2021, a Parent and Student 2021 Information Session for St Patrick's Marist will be conducted by YouthAdvances CEO - Keith Reynolds.

Parents and students can attend this information evening virtually by zoom on Wednesday 17th February 18:30-20:30.

Keith will go into further details about the program and outline the expectations for obtaining the award.

Invitation letter and flyers from Youth Advance are attached for your information.

English

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE ENGLISH FACULTY!

Welcome to English 2021 - especially to new families joining our College.

We wish to acknowledge the 2020 Year 12 cohort on their fabulous personal achievements in the Higher School Certificate.  English continues to demonstrate above state average results across our Advanced, Standard and Extension 1 courses. In particular, we have seen substantial growth in English Extension 1 and English Studies, recognising the outstanding work of those students.  We take the opportunity to sincerely congratulate Joseph Arabit who achieved two state English rankings - 3rd place in Advanced English and 6th place in Extension English 1.

The English faculty continues to diligently and enthusiastically, meet the demands of the changed Stage 6 curriculum, assessment procedures and prescribed text list to provide students with learning opportunities in diverse and interesting ways.  2021 will see the emphasis on practice writing under examination conditions, encouraging Year 12 students to APPLY feedback productively and effectively as efficient independent learners together with Year 12 teachers providing students with additional workshops to build upon their knowledge and skills across each Module.

Year 7 English students are adapting well to the demands of High School.  Organisation, especially using Google classroom and Google drive has been a priority as we commence the new year. Our new classrooms are fully equipped with the latest technology together with flexible spacing and variable seating structures to provide an environment that is dynamic and integrative, promoting opportunities for independent and collaborative learning.

Years 8-9 have returned to the College to appreciate the updated indoor and outdoor spaces, having a positive effect on their attention spans, most showing positive attitudes towards their class groups and Units 1. As you are aware, a note regarding film viewing has been sent home and a copy can be found on your child’s google classroom. An expression of interest for public speaking has been sent out to all students and the interest has been overwhelming.  Please be aware that you can access your child’s class work via google classroom.  We urge you to organise with your child to add your email address to their classroom to be able to monitor their work. By the end of next week, all students will become aware of the requirements for Assessment task 1.  We encourage parents to work with their middle school children to be mindful of class expectations, due dates of benchmarks and Assessment task 1. The College diary, email and google classroom are convenient places where communication of events, classwork, homework and upcoming tasks are recorded.

We encourage students to think critically and creatively, to strive to achieve their personal best at all times. Students are given access to a variety of resources;  including fiction and non fiction texts, film, academic papers, websites, online Libraries, Education Perfect, Faculty created materials, Incursions and Excursions, extracurricular activities such as Debating, Public Speaking, Marist Oratory, Writing Competitions, Writers Society, Write a Book in a Day and Independent/Collaborative Project Based Learning opportunities.  However, at this stage of the year, the most valued resource your child has access to is the guidance of highly experienced English teachers whose passion for Reading and Writing;  for Literature; for discussion of ‘Big Ideas’; for effective Communication, will facilitate growth and development, if so desired.

Families who have had a long association with St. Patrick’s College, Dundas will know of Mrs Loraine Pett’s tremendous contribution to the learning and lives of past and present students.  At the end of last year Mrs Pett embarked on the next journey of her life, adjusting to the early months of her retirement. However, Mrs Pett will return this year on a casual basis and we are delighted to be able to continue to benefit from her wisdom and expertise. Also, Ms Sarah Duffy, who has been on sabbatical leave will return to us Term 2.  Students and teachers are eagerly awaiting her return, we have missed her valuable contributions to the life of the College - both in and out of the classroom.

For matters regarding your child’s progress in English, please do hesitate to contact the classroom teacher via email.  Your child will have a timetable, access to google classroom, College diary, workbook where you can locate this information. For other matters, contact the Leaders of Learning, English.

College Swimming Carnival 2021

St Patrick’s Marist once again held our annual swimming carnival at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, on Monday 1st February. It again proved to be an excellent stage to host our carnival that was filled with fun and enthusiasm. It was an excellent way to begin the 2021 Sporting calendar for St Patrick’s Marist College.

A Huge thank you to staff and students for making the day a huge success with  many challenges faced with COVID restrictions and regulations and thank you to all parents for working with us and CEDP policy to ensure we ran a COVID compliant school event.

This year proved to be a memorable carnival based largely on the efforts of the Year 12 House Captains. Their preparation before the carnival, their passion and enthusiasm and their involvement in running the carnival on the day was absolutely outstanding and ensured that the carnival was enjoyed by all staff and students. The House Parades for 2021 were again a standout for the Carnival.

Congratulations to Paul who were named House Champions on the day. A full list of Age Champions, House points and records set on the day will be listed in the upcoming newsletter and awarded later this term at a full College Assembly.

Thank you again, to all students and staff for your participation and positive attitude on the day.

Road Safety Around Schools

As school returns for 2021, it is important to remind the school community that Road Rules are in place to protect all road users including pedestrians, and all motorists are expected to follow the road rules when dropping-off or picking-up students.

Road Safety Educational Tools

Parents are encouraged to review and access the road safety resources available on Council’s website. Resources include;

  • Council’s ‘Road Safety Around Schools’ educational flyer (available in 8 translations),
  • TfNSW’s ‘The top ten misunderstood Road Rules’ information flyer
  • An opportunity to book a short 10 minute educational presentation for your school P&C or parent/carer body on ‘Road safety – keeping kids safe at your school’ developed and presented by Council’s Regulatory Team. This presentation raises awareness of road safety issues around schools and can be delivered online (preferred method) or in person, following appropriate NSW Heath directions under the Public Health Act
