Principals Report

A message from Mrs Buzcynski

Dear Parents/Carers,

It was great to see so many mothers at our Mother’s Day craft activity.  We were able to hold all of the events and had 107 mother’s attend with children over the four mornings. It was lovely to be able to hold a larger parent event again and we enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the mothers in the community.

Our preschool had an assessment and rating visit at the end of last term. We were rated at overall  exceeding having met the standard in all areas and the exceeding themes in four areas. The preschool has very high quality practice in all areas, we are lucky to have very accomplished preschool staff who should be congratulated for their strong practice.

Staff have begun working on reports, we were moving to an online format- for data entry but have had issues setting up so will continue to use the paper report. This year all EAL/D learners are required to have information about their English language proficiency included in their school report. This is required even if students are fairly competent English language learners.

EAL/D learners’ reports must show:

· their EAL/D Learning Progression phase – we will explain this in the report

· a comment about the student’s progress in learning English

 · information about how the student’s English language learning has been supported

We have added the EAL/D section into reports so students will either get the report with the EAL/D section or a separate report with it not included. We have also changed the general comment to future goals for learning to give some next steps and goals for children’s learning.

Regards,

Gabrielle Buczynski

Peer Support

Session 1 of Peer Support

We are commencing our Peer Support lessons next week, week 5. The whole school participates in Peer Support  for 30 minutes each week. Two Peer leaders facilitate a small group of 8-10 younger students, who work together through a number of structured activities. Each teacher will supervise 2-3 groups in their classroom. We are working on a module called Living Positively helping us explore the concept of optimism. The module runs for 8 sessions. Our first session enables the children to get to know everyone in the group, agreeing on how they will work well together and interact cooperatively with others. They will also begin to think about what it means to be optimistic.

We encourage you to talk to your children about Peer Support every week, as it will help to reinforce the concepts learned in each session.

Session 2

In week 6 of Peer Support the children will share the things they enjoy in life and have an opportunity to discuss their favourite activity. This session enables children to recognise what makes them happy.

Discuss with your child their favourite activity.

Keeping Our Community Safe-COVID Update

Any visitors or parents must not enter the school site if they are unwell and must comply with COVID sign on requirements. parents are able to drop off and pick up children without signing on.

Students must not attend school if they are unwell, even if they have very mild flu-like symptoms. If your child has flu-like symptoms (cough, runny nose, sore throat, fever, aches and pains, sneezing) they must have a negative COVID test result before they can return to school. You must provide evidence of the result before they will be permitted to return to school.

A screenshot of the COVID test advice is sufficient proof. This or other evidence of the test result may be submitted through the SkoolBag App, by emailling the school or sent with your child when they return to school. If your child has a negative test result but is still experiencing symptoms they must remain at home until the symptoms are gone. We appreciate your support in this matter.

Attendance

Students should be at school unless:

  • they have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition and the expected timeframe
  • they are currently unwell.

Please Note: Students absent for 3 days or more require a Dr's Certificate when they return to school.

School Uniform

All students are expected to wear school uniform each day. In winter this includes black jackets or jumpers. Students should wear short socks or tights with feet if wearing skorts, shorts and winter pinafores. Socks worn over the knees and leggings should not be worn under or with  winter pinafores, shorts or skorts. Wearing correct school uniform creates a sense of pride and belonging to our school.

Zone Cross Country 2021

Friday May 7th was the running of our Zone Cross Country at Glenwood.  Pendle Hill sent 40 boys and girls from 8 to 12 years old . We were represented extremely well by our competitors who showed great enthusiasm and excellent behavior.  All of our runners tried very hard on a difficult track. Each year group had over 100 runners from 22 schools.

We had 3 outstanding results with Zoey, Joanna and Ephriam finishing 11th in their races. In what was our best result in many years Pendle Hill finished 10th over all on the day.  I'd like to thank the many parents who came to support the team on the day. I know the children appreciated it.

We Love Our Spinach!

The spinach in our preschool has grown so much.

The children helped cut the spinach and we cooked it in our preschool. Many children and teachers tasted the spinach. The children are learning how to care for our plants and vegetables and to eat our crop.

We are learning that spinach is healthy for our bodies.

Attendance News

How do you encourage school attendance?

Top attendance tips for parents

·      Schools want to work in partnership with parents – act early if you have any concerns by contacting your child’s school and asking for advice and support

·      Remember that every day counts

·      There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes and their social connectedness

·      Talk positively about school and the importance of attending every day

·      Open and prompt communication with your child’s school about all absences is a good idea

·      Avoid making routine medical and dental appointments during the school day or planning family holidays during the term

·      Seek help from your school if you are concerned about your child’s attendance and wellbeing. Schools want to work in partnership with parents to support student attendance and wellbeing.

Reduce your child’s skin cancer risk

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Australia. Two out of three Aussie kids at school today will be diagnosed with skin cancer later in life – some of them with deadly melanomas. At least 95% of all skin cancers are caused by ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun. Unprotected exposure of your child’s skin to UVR significantly increases their risk of developing skin cancer later in life. When you protect your skin, you reduce your risk. Remember to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide!

To learn when the UV radiation is going to be high enough to damage unprotected skin in your local area, download and check the SunSmart App.
