Virginia Primary School Newsletter

Issue 8, 03/06/2021

From the Principal

Dear Families,

The end of term is fast approaching with a great deal of learning taking place and goals achieved. We are in the process of organising our Parent Interview time-tables so we can share some of these highlights with you. Please make sure that you book in an interview time with your child’s teacher so they can discuss your child’s report with you and answer any questions that you may have. If you would like to book a time to meet with any of our NIT – extra curriculum teachers (Science/PE = Mr Yates, Vietnamese/Language = Mrs Danh and The Arts = Mrs Graham), please let the front office know as they will arrange for this to happen.

We want to ensure that there is open communication at all times as we are a partnership and value ‘working together’. If you need assistance with booking, please speak to our lovely front office staff who would be more than happy to help out. More information on bookings will be available soon.

I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate all classes for sharing their learning during Reconciliation Week 27th May to 3rd June.  Reconciliation Australia acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

I would like to share a little bit about a valuable piece of new Art Work up provided to us by the department. The original artwork was created by Ngarrindjeri artist and designer Jordan Lovegrove, specifically for the Department for Education in South Australia to represent the Aboriginal Education Strategy 2019-2029.

‘The Journey of Success’ artwork symbolises both the intent of the Aboriginal Education Strategy and steps towards Reconciliation for the department. It represents that the journey of success for a young Aboriginal person is shaped by a solid foundation in learning and development.

Our educators have the highest expectations for Aboriginal children and young people and it’s our purpose to support them to reach their full potential through a culturally responsive approach to teaching and learning.

The artwork will be displayed in our front office, so please feel free to come in and have a look. We are waiting on having some other artwork completed around our school which is very exciting. We will keep you posted.

Lastly, I would like to thank all our families for taking extra precaution during drop off and pick up times, by using the 3 main entrances and not walking through or parking in the staff carparks. As mentioned previously, our students’ safety is paramount.

As a school, we are always looking at ways in which we can further improve, and welcome any ideas or feedback. Thuy and I are on duty in the mornings so feel free to come and have a chat with us.

Learning Together, Learning For Our Future.

Warmest Regards,

Voula Pounendis

Student Shout-outs!

We are so proud of our students in many different ways. Shout outs are a way to recognise and show appreciation for our students who demonstrate kind acts, good character, persistence and achievements.

Shout out to the following students:

Kim Lam in room 8 - for showing great manners and kindness to our cleaner Shivaun. Kim has been welcoming by saying hello and being friendly. Very proud of you Kim, well done!

Anton M (Room 10) and Riley E (room 8) - These boys individually spotted students sitting on the friendship bench, at separate times, and invited the students to to play! So very proud of you boys for being so friendly and including others to play! This is exactly how we expect the friendship bench to be used! Thank you for being so kind and caring boys! Well done!

Madison Mould in room 7 - for spending her lunch time volunteering as a library monitor; helping to keeping an eye on things. Madison continued to be helpful by picking up items left on the basketball court at the end of lunch!! What a fantastic way to show school pride! Very proud of your efforts Madison!

Ruby in room 11 - for regularly showing great manners by saying hello to staff when walking past! Acknowledging people with a simple hello when they walk past is very polite and a great habit to have! Well done Ruby for consistently demonstrating great manners!

Alex Minkoff in room 9 - for picking up rubbish in his own time! Alex even picked up rubbish when room 9 was given time on the playground after their NAPLAN test. Alex picked up all this rubbish to care for our school. What a fantastic demonstration of school pride! Well done Alex, very proud of you!

A word from the Library

Issue 4 of Lucky Book club has been delivered to students.

The closing date for all orders is Monday the 7th of June (week 7).

Payments can be made at the School Front office up to this date.

Scholastic offers an online ordering option, LOOP, (Linked Online Ordering & Payment). The closing date for our school when using this is also Monday the 7th of June.

Accidents happen!

We understand that sometimes things happen that you have no control over and occasionally books borrowed from the library can get damaged. Pages may be loose or fall out, drink bottles leak or family pets get carried away. If the book you have borrowed is damaged in any way, please get it to the library as soon as you can and please don’t try repairing the book yourself. As much as I appreciate you wanting to help, I have special glues, tapes and techniques here to rescue some books. If a book gets wet, carefully separate the pages before it dries and bring it to the library at your nearest convenience.

Thank you and happy reading.
