Welcome back.
Sometimes time flies by. When you’re locked down, restricted to your home and LGA, time travels much more slowly!
I would first like to say how very much our staff are looking forward to students returning to the College. Year 12 students have been present this week, and it has been exciting, joyful and a little bit stressful as they see the HSC exams rapidly approaching. The overwhelming experience has been a relief. We are relieved to return to a normal routine and to be teaching with colleagues and students who are physically sitting in front of us.
The connection between school and home has, in many ways, never been tighter. Our House Coordinators have probably made over 1000 phone calls during Term 3 to support students and families. You may have received several calls, voicemail or email messages from our staff regarding the wellbeing and learning of your children. Additionally, many parents have been in touch to request support, suggestions and assistance. I trust that you have had a positive experience as we have worked together.
Learning from home (or homeschooling) has been a challenge throughout this time. I want to acknowledge our teaching and administrative staff who have made huge adjustments to provide continuing rich learning experiences for our students. I also acknowledge all our parents who have acted as part time teachers as well. I know most families have to juggle work, schooling, health and lockdown stresses. I hope and pray your family has stayed safe, and for the many who have had family members contract Covid-19, that they have returned to good health.
Let’s not underestimate the challenge that there will be when students return to school on Monday 25 October. Your child might find it difficult to get back into a routine; to get dressed in a uniform every day; to get out of bed on time; to find their books, pens and IT device; to remain focused in a classroom; and to follow the Covid rules that will be required.
However, it is important that students return to school as soon as possible. Having been away for so long, students need to reconnect with, and perhaps re-learn, effective work in a classroom environment. That’s going to be easy for some and difficult for others. However, it will be easier having their friends and teachers around to encourage and support them.
It will also be super exciting for students to see and be with their friends again. This excitement will have to be expressed in a Covid safe way. Again, another challenge! While they may be desperate to hug, kiss or shake hands, students are NOT allowed to do these things. The Covid-19 protocols are listed in this newsletter, and while these restrictions might seem unreasonable or silly to students, they are NSW Health regulations which will be enforced.
There are seven weeks of regular schooling remaining in 2021. I urge and encourage every student to return to school and make the most of both the learning opportunities and the social connections. While so much has changed over the past few months, our core purpose remains the same - to provide a safe, caring and challenging environment for our students to grow into respectful and competent members of their families, communities, workplaces and society.
My final words are for our Year 12 students who will complete their final week of schooling. It has been a long march to reach this date. Did you know that the HSC exams have been delayed by about three weeks this year? It will be a relief for every HSC student to finally start their exams on 9 November, and once and for all finish their year. It has been disappointing that we couldn’t share the final term together and celebrate each milestone. But congratulations to every student who has shown remarkable resilience to keep going and keep going and keep going while isolated at home. Please know that we are proud of you, and we remain ready and willing to support you until the final examination. Then we have the honour of celebrating your graduation from Delay College on Friday 3 December. Until then, stay strong!
St Patrick, pray for us.
