Melrose Park Public School Newsletter

Term 4 Week 10

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents, carers, and the wider Melrose Park community for your support, encouragement and kindness during 2021. It certainly has been a year of challenges and uncertainty. Our MPPS community banded together and focused on staying happy, safe and well.

As we come into the festive season and summer holidays I know how much we will all enjoy the  privilege of being able to share this special time to be together with family and friends knowing that we worked together for the wellbeing of all our community.

This week is Week 10 of the term, which is usually the last week of term. However this year we press on to Week 11 with students finishing the school year on Thursday 16 December.  Parents are reminded that attendance is expected at school every day. Exceptions to this is if the child is unwell, injured or if there is a family emergency.

We look forward to farewelling our Year 6 students as they move  on to high school. You are welcome to gather at the Waratah St exit and inside the fenceline from 2.50pm. Students will gather on each side of the back path and 'clap out'  the departing  Class of 2021.

Can I remind all parents to keep a close eye on SkoolBag, particularly in relation to events that require permission. Until the end of school we have quite a number of events occurring and some of these need parent permission. If you need help with SkoolBag and ensuring that you have full access to this app, please contact the front office on 98744669 and the wonderful office staff will help you with the process. We are aware that the Skoolbag App needs regular updating to stay functional.

Farewell

We wish all Year 6 students and families good luck and good fortunes as they move into high school. We thank our families for being part of the Melrose Park PS school community over the last seven years.

A special thank you and farewell is extended to families whose youngest child completes their primary school years.  Several families have been part of our community for many many years.   Families  Trpenovski, Thadanbath, Tasiovasilis, Selvaratam, Bragg, Flint, Harvey, Lawrence, Luksic, Maranda, Nedelcu, Pearce, Phun and Babayi; thank you for your support of our school and best wishes for the high school years.

We say farewell to families who are moving to areas further afield. We wish these families happiness and health as they begin new adventures in places such as Canberra, Coffs Harbour, Queensland, western NSW, regional NSW, the south coast of NSW and to new areas of Sydney. May  you always have great memories of your time at Melrose Park Public School.

We farewell some of our dedicated staff as they move onto new adventures. We wish both Mrs Spenceley and Mrs Price all the best next year and thank them for their many years of service at Melrose Park. Your impact has been great and you will be greatly missed.

Congratulations Learners

Semester 2 Reports

Our classroom teachers have been incredibly busy with assessment and writing reports for their students. This is a huge undertaking that occurs outside of teaching time and we would like to thank our teachers for the extra efforts the process entails. Reports will be sent home next Monday 13 December after Presentation Day assemblies.

In line with the updated Department of Education advice Semester 2 reports have been modified as a result of the long learning home period this year. Reports will reflect strengths and areas for future focus in english and mathematics and provides a general comment on student learning dispositions.

Uniform orders

This week is the last week for uniform shop orders for 2021. Please order online. The order will be collated, distributed on Thursday and sent to your child's classroom.

Any orders placed after this week will be available for the beginning of the school year. The uniform shop will be open on Monday 31 January from 9 -10am to pick up orders for the 2022 school year.

I would like to thank our all volunteers both onsite and offsite for their help and support throughout the year. Supply issues, logistics and volunteer restrictions have been a challenge and all overcome through  a wonderful commitment to support our school community.

Swimming Carnival 2022

The swimming carnival will be held in the first days of the new school year.

This event is scheduled for Thursday 3 February  and will held at Granville Swimming Centre. Hopefully if the sun appears and summer arrives there will be many opportunities for children to get out and practise their skills over the school holidays.

As a result of students not participating in the Learn to Swim program over the last two years, we are inviting Year 2 students and non swimmers to join in the fun of the day. These students will travel by bus and participate in a day of water safety and learn to swim activities on the same day. These activities will be held in learners pool.

There will be a permission note going home this week outlining more information regarding the swimming carnival and water safety program.

The swimming carnival is always a great way to start the new year in a fun and happy way.

Digital Technology - Hour of Code

During December, tens of millions of students in more than 180 countries will take part in the Hour of Code. The importance of experiencing coding (programming) is being recognised as a vital skill for 21st century learners. Coding is also part of the Digital Technologies curriculum which is being taught in Science and Technology this term.

All students at MPPS will be introduced to age appropriate coding activities at school. Our goal is to have students think, create and have fun, all while learning computer programming.

For our classrooms to participate in this course, we have created Code.org accounts for each student. To ensure student privacy, only first names are used. Students can log in from outside the classroom using a computer or tablet at home.

Students should go to code.org then sign in using their 6-letter year Section Code and their allocated password (a picture) that will be given to them at school.

Kindy Section Code: MKSBDD, Year 1 Section Code: GKTNXT, Year 2 Section Code: JTWGBC, Year 3 Section Code: RSXJQS, Year 4 Section Code: GZPYSC, Year 5 Section Code: NPGXPR, Year 6 Section Code: CGPBJY

Why not get involved in the ‘Hour of Code’ by sitting with your child and working together on problem solving and writing code?

Parents can also try out Hour of code at  http://hourofcode.com/au

President's Report

Today is the final P&C Meeting for 2021 and what a year it has been. It has been the biggest challenge of ours, and our children’s school life.

It has also impacted the ways the P&C functions. We were unable to engage with the community like we normally do, particularly our 75th anniversary last year. It also changed the way book club and uniform shop operate.

It has a been a challenging and lonely time for many. We hope we will be able to put this behind us and head towards a happier 2022.

All is not grim; we had some wonderful news on Friday. The Department of Social Services approved a $4,500 grant to the school to upgrade the shades that are in need of replacement.

As we close the year, I would like to thank the Executive Committee:

· Erika Hewitt, Vice President

· Amy Greenshields, Secretary

· Stephanie Williams, Treasurer

The P&C Coordinators:

· Book Club - Nicola Rench

· Events/Sponsorship - Dolores Bragg

· Golf Day - Cathy Lincoln and Stephanie Williams

· School Banking - Katrina Chase

· Uniform Shop - Lucinda Mavin

· Website – Ros Wagstaff

Thank you for your hard work and adapting the way your roles function when restrictions came into place.

Thank you, Katrina for keeping school banking going. Though we will no longer be doing school banking, we hope you will stay on next year. I’m sure there’ll be another role for your talents!

Thank you, Ros, for your many years of managing of the website, orders and reports. We hope you will continue to stay on as a member of the P&C.

And all the class parents who helped pass on important information from the school and P&C to our families.

I also want to thank the previous committee, particularly Dolores who built up the P&C in many ways:

· Incorporating the P&C

· Organised many successful fundraisers

· Put in systems and processes that streamlined the way we work

Because of the hard work by you and your team, the P&C was in a comfortable position this quiet year.

Thank you, members of the wider P&C community and parents who gave your voices and helped us in decision making. Thank you, parents, for supporting the initiatives that we ran.

I also thank Payce, Lance and Adriana for your contributions. This has been a tremendous benefit to our working families.

Definitely not the least, I thank Clare, Alice and Belinda for your support and guidance and working so closely with the committee and continuing the wonderful partnership the P&C has with the school. I also thank all the staff, teachers who have supported us. The P&C looks forward to another year of collaboration and growth in 2022.

Thank you
