Relieving Principal's Message

As we come to the end of term 1, I think back to this time last year when we were learning from home.  This term has seen us return to greater normality with our parents being permitted to return to the school for drop off and pick up.  The communication and connectedness to our school community is so important to us all here at Punchbowl PS and we look forward to renewing and building these connections as the year progresses.

This term, school staff have been looking at the successes and areas for improvement within our school as we create the Strategic Improvement Plan for the next four years.  This process has involved looking closely at our systems, implementation of evidence based teaching and learning, student performance data and surveys from last year.  This culminated in the presentation of that plan to the P&C last Friday at our first meeting for the year.

The Strategic Improvement plan includes three strategic directions that the school will be working on to improve outcomes for our students and their families.

Strategic Direction 1 - Student growth and attainment

Purpose: Improve student outcomes in reading and numeracy through evidence-informed strategies and embedded evaluative practices.

This strategic direction includes two initiatives: Explicit teaching reading and Explicit teaching numeracy

We will aim to personalise learning in reading and numeracy to differentiate teaching for all students and track progress and growth through:

  • Selection of evidence-informed teaching strategies based on student learning needs
  • Evaluating the impact of the implemented strategies on student learning
  • Ongoing professional learning to build teacher capacity

Strategic Direction 2 - Stronger teaching and learning

Purpose: Data-driven learning underpinned by quality teaching practices and a culture of high expectations.

This strategic direction includes two initiatives: Quality teaching and Enriched learning

We will aim to:

  • Increase staff capacity to analyse student performance data to improve teacher effectiveness, target intervention and improve student outcomes
  • Create and sustain a culture of high expectations to maximise optimal learning environments.
  • Provide challenging learning experiences that enrich the delivery of core curriculum to facilitate engagement and improve learning outcomes.

Strategic Direction 3 – Strong and Connected Community

Purpose: Enhance student wellbeing and community engagement by building a cohesive educational community and fostering positive relationships.

This strategic direction includes two initiatives: Wellbeing and Community

We will aim to:

  • Embed a school-wide culture that supports wellbeing through practices that promote social, emotional, behavioural and intellectual engagement, and by fostering positive relationships across the school community.
  • Ensure student absences do not impact on learning outcomes through teachers, parents and community working together.
  • Embed Inclusion in all aspects of school life, supported by culture, policies and everyday practices.
  • Demonstrate responsiveness to community need and priorities through consultative and collaborative practices and activities.

I wish the entire community a restful, safe holiday.  Students return on Tuesday 20 April.

Schools as Community Centre - SaCC

Parent Courses

Our SaCC supports parents with many classes, some of which are TAFE recognised. These programs bring parents together to learn useful life skills to help support themselves and their children. There have been some great learning opportunities for parents this term:

  • Mum2Mum English conversation
  • Eat, Move and Healthy eating
  • TAFE NSW courses - Floristry and English

The parents attending these classes are finding them very useful to further develop their skills and education.

Playgroup

Our little learners and parents have learnt lots of songs and rhymes this term when attending the various playgroups throughout the week. This term we welcomed nine new families to our centre.  Participants enjoy dancing and moving to the music, learning about the importance of reading, engaging through play, interacting with other parents and meeting new friends.

Learning Hub - STARTTS program

The Learning Hub is up and running on Tuesday afternoons in the SaCC.  This program has been made possible through our partnership with STARTTS and the students have benefited from the extra help and time to complete their homework. Thank you to STARTTS and the tutors who volunteered their time to support the homework group.

Upcoming SaCC Programs

Drop in Sessions: With the easing of Covid-19 restrictions we will be able to provide more opportunities for new families and those who may have missed out access to SaCC programs this term. The SaCC continues to operate as per the Covid-19 Plan and we appreciate your cooperation and understanding.  More information will be made available to the community and at the beginning of Term 2.

Easter Hat Parade: The playgroups are looking forward joining the school’s Annual Easter hat parade this year which is being held on Wednesday 31 March. Students and staff have been working on their fancy hats to showcase on the day.

Download the Skoolbag app and join the closed SaCC Punchbowl Public School Facebook page for more information of upcoming SaCC programs for Term 2.

Preschool

At PPS, our preschool is very lucky to be part of a vibrant and multicultural community. We celebrate this diversity each day as we all share our experiences. Throughout the school calendar, some special dates, such as Harmony Day, provide us with a further opportunity to celebrate our amazing country's rich diversity.

Harmony day, which is celebrated on the 21st of March each year, is celebrated in the community and schools around the country. This Significant day coincides with the United Nations' International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is a time to celebrate Australia's cultural diversity and promote inclusiveness, with its key message being 'Everyone Belongs'.

BELONGING Experiencing belonging – knowing where and with whom you belong – is integral to human existence. Children belong first to a family, a cultural group, a neighbourhood and a wider community. Belonging acknowledges children's interdependence with others and the basis of relationships in defining identities. In early childhood, and throughout life, relationships are crucial to a sense of belonging. Belonging is central to being and becoming in that it shapes who children are and who they can become. Early Years Learning Framework, page 7

At PPS Preschool, we are proud of who we are and all the uniqueness that makes each one of us who we are. We all belong!

Early Stage 1

This term for science Kindergarten students have been going outside everyday to explore the weather using different weather watches. Kindergarten students have begun to describe the weather and explain how it makes them feel. They are then recording this information daily in their weather journal. Students have also begun to explore the different seasons that occur throughout the year. They have been learning about how these seasons impact their lives and the lives of plants and animals. Have a look at our weather investigators!

Stage 1

Stage 1 had so much fun in our science lesson where we were learning how everything comes from something. We made chocolate ice-cream in a bag to show that ice-cream comes from the natural resource of cows milk. We used our own spoons to taste it and it was yummy!

Stage 1 Wet Weather Pickup Procedures

Stage 1 teachers are extremely happy to see parents back on school grounds. Just a few reminders about pick up procedures for Stage 1 students.

  • Year 1 and Year 2 students assemble in stage lines at 3pm every day.

  •  All students are to be picked up by parents/carers or an older sibling.

  • Teachers must sight the person picking up each student before they are allowed to leave.

  • Any students still in lines at 3:10pm will be walked to the office.

If it is wet weather we ask for the following to happen:

  • Year 1 students are to be collected from their classrooms

  • Year 1 parents are to enter the building via the door closest to Rossmore avenue (see picture)

  • Year 2 students are to be collected from the Stage 1 hall area

  • Year 2 parents are to wait at the door near the girls toilets (see picture)

Stage 2

3 Flourish and 4 Success are celebrating their uplifting art! We are very proud of our effort, creativity and quality work that is on display in the Stage 2 hallway. Our artworks are inspired by Van Gogh’s famous painting, Sunflowers.

K-6 Owls and K-6 Kookaburras

The Owls and Kookaburras have had fun working alongside their peers across the school, highlights include Peer Support and Harmony Day. During Peer Support students were able to build new friendships with peers from different classrooms and enjoy working together to complete a range of activities. For Harmony day the Kookaburras and Owls joined stage 2 and 3 classes and got creative making origami boats and paper chains to represent inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

For maths we have completed 2D and 3D shape. It was fun going for a shape walk around our school and identifying all the different shapes we could. We have also been learning about measurement and using rulers to measure height and length of different objects.  For writing we have continued to create narrative texts and have been reading about characters of stories to support our description writing using adjectives. In science we have studied different landforms and how they change over time due to erosion.

Kookaburras and Owls wish everyone a happy holiday break.

Stage 3

Punchbowl Pioneers Gala Day

On Wednesday, 27 Stage 3 boys attended the Punchbowl Pioneers Gala Day at Bankstown stadium.  When we arrived, we did stretches and practised our basketball skills.  Later on, we started playing matches against other schools.  At the end we watched Punchbowl Boys High School play against each other.  We then went back to school and played sport.

Issa and Ibrahim 5/6 Titans

Community Language

Community language students participated in activities around “Harmony Day”. Students from across all stages engaged enthusiastically in art and craft lessons to create a work of art that depicted their understanding of what ‘Harmony’ meant to them. Mrs Roffaell and Mrs Awada worked hard to involve students of all ages and stages in the Arabic interpretation of “Harmony Day”. Students were encouraged to write Arabic words to describe their thoughts on what ‘Harmony Day’ meant to them. The art work students produced not only demonstrate their Arabic skills but also their understanding of how to be harmonious.

Gardening group

THE EXCELLENT ENVIRONMENTALISTS

The gardening group are proud to introduce the newest member to Punchbowl Public. Drum roll.... Its Poppy the Punchbowl Scarecrow! Stage 2/3 students recycled materials to create her and are very proud to introduce Poppy.  Poppy will live at the front of the stage 2 garden area. Wet weather gardening activities can be so much fun, what will you create these school holidays?

PBL

Wow! What a second half of the term have we had!

So much has gone on in the PBL Space here at Punchbowl. We had our Launch day and boy oh boy did the kids look good in their house colours.

We also had our Harmony Day Celebrations and it was a day that was fantastic with all of the colours of the rainbow represented in cultural outfits and other sharing of ideas and activities. If you have not seen the video yet go to this link to see it https://youtu.be/ZRNZiZWh2ho .

It is great looking into so many classrooms around the school to see that the children have nearly settled into class routines, seeing great learning everywhere.

With all of these major events going on we have not forgotten about the little things and respect for each other and as we head into term two, we will be spending some time looking at the respect to our school grounds. Especially with rubbish on the fields and other areas of the school.

This recent wet weather has been challenging and watching the students be resilient and making new ways to have their breaks indoors really shows what incredible children we have here at Punchbowl!!

Punchbowl Public School – PBL Team

Library

Our students are learning in a variety of teaching environments. The library is a shared learning space which aims to build essential skills among our students, assisting them along their journey towards becoming independent, resilient learners taking ownership and pride in their work. Our staff are providing opportunities for students to build on their knowledge base, learning how to identify their interests and seek information to gain deeper understanding of those interests.

Ahmed: “I’m curious to know how sharks adapted to their environment. I wonder how they can swim so fast with their large bones”.

Book Fair

It was a great pleasure witnessing the cheerful smiles among our students surrounding the excitement of Book Fair. With the support of our school community we managed to reach our sales goal in just three days! This assisted with providing the school library with many new book titles which students are able to borrow and enjoy reading at home. Thank you to all our parents and staff for your ongoing support.

Mrs Mathews

Chess Club

With much enthusiasm a large group of students attend Chess Club once a week. They are receiving coaching from Sydney Academy of Chess and are growing in confidence and skills.

Israfil: “I like playing chess because it makes me think”.

Mariam: “I’m learning to play chess. I like it because it challenges me”.

Road safety around our school is everyone's responsibility

  • Make sure your children are in appropriate child car seats that are fitted and used correctly.
  • Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone as children are about and can be unpredictable.
  • Always park and turn legally around schools and avoid dangerous manoeuvres like U-turns and three-point turns.
  • Always give way to pedestrians, especially when entering and leaving driveways.
  • Drop the kids off and pick them up on the school side of the road on Rossmore Ave or Viola St drop-off and pick-up area. Calling out to them from across the road is dangerous because they may run to you without checking traffic.
  • It's safest for the kids to get out of the car on the kerb side of the road to be away from passing traffic.
  • Plan your trip to school so you are using pedestrian crossing areas. There are 2 located on Rossmore Ave, both with school crossing supervisors in the morning and afternoon.

Young children can learn these safe pedestrian habits from you and use them when they are old enough to travel alone.

The Police and rangers will be patrolling our school regularly throughout the year. This includes Rossmore Ave and Viola St entries.

Your child's safety depends on us. Road safety around our school is everyone's responsibility.
