Principals Column

Welcome everyone to Term 2

We are certainly off to a racing start! Yesterday’s Cross Country saw perfect conditions on the Big Beach track. There was an outstanding level of grit and determination shown by students and some incredible finishes. Well done to all competitors. The District Cross Country will be held this Friday 23 April at Bowraville.

Our student led ANZAC Dawn Service is this Sunday 25 April at 6.00am overlooking Little Beach followed by a community BBQ in the park run by the local RFS. Thank you to the P&C who will be making Anzac biscuits for the morning. All students attending need to wear full school uniform so please dig out those school jumpers.

This is the link for students to please continue practicing the song “Lest We Forget” at home.

This term also sees the appointment of Lyndsey Caldecott in the role of Relieving Assistant Principal, where her expertise and support will benefit the school in our continued collective vision for success. Congratulations Lyndsey.

At Scotts Head Public School, our vision is to nurture everyone’s physical, social, emotional and academic wellbeing, in a safe, caring, happy, orderly and productive community of lifelong learners.

We believe in building a culture of high expectations for students to feel valued and cared for to enable them to succeed and thrive. At our school students are engaged in rigorous learning experiences in local and global contexts to continually develop learner habits, learning strategies and assessment capability, that result in at least a year's worth of growth, for a year of learning in all key learning areas.

Staff and students collaborate and encourage peers and colleagues, using effective feedback to reflect and empower all members of our school community to be confident self-directed and successful learners.

We are committed to supporting each other, creating an empathetic and compassionate learning environment which fosters self-regulation, leadership and autonomous thinking.

Together we make the difference, lets launch into Term 2 go Scotts Head Public School!

Check In Assessments and NAPLAN

CHECK IN ASSESSMENT:

The Check-in Assessment includes two online assessments for students:

  • Reading Assessment
  • Numeracy Assessment

Each assessment is designed to be quick and easy to administer, consisting of approximately 40 multiple choice questions.

The Check-in Assessment supplements existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs.

The assessment will take place for students in Year 4 and 6 on Monday 26 April 2021 and Tuesday 27 April 2021, Term 2 Week 2 2021.

If you would like your child to be exempt from this assessment please contact the school as soon as possible.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress.

Federal, state and territory education ministers agreed to gradually transition NAPLAN online by 2022. NAPLAN Online is a tailored test that adapts to student responses, providing better assessment and more precise results.

NAPLAN is only for Year 3 and 5. This year it will be held over four days in Term 2 Week 4 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings between 9-11am.

All tests will be online, except for Year 3 writing which will be on paper.

Year 3 and 5 students will have access to online practice tests and more information will be sent home soon.

If you have any questions please contact your classroom teacher. If you would like your child to be exempt from this assessment please contact the school as soon as possible.

This year Adam Rumsey and Lyndsey Caldecott will be administering the NAPLAN and Check-In assessments for all students from years 3-6.

Please see below the timetables for the assessments.

We would like to remind parents that in an effort to conserve paper, notes relating to the whole school will only be sent home with the eldest family member.

Can you volunteer? We need your help with the School Banking program!

Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.

The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. The School Banking is processed at the same time each week and will only take a small amount of your time .The Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they practice saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.

As part of volunteering you are eligible to receive a Certificate of Attainment that details the activities that you are involved in. For example: cash handling, program facilitation, account reconciliation and more.

Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday. If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please contact the P&C on scottsheadpandc@hotmail.com.
