Hello, Giinagay, Hai

Little Whales Kindergarten Transition Program

Congratulations to all families on a very successful orientation session that occurred down at the local park.

The Little Whales Kindergarten Transition Program is a partnership between families and school to support and nurture the best possible start for Kindergarten students in their first year of school. The program provides a holistic, flexible, play-based, early learning program that seeks to build on the strengths of families, children and their immediate environment. Supporting confidence and a sense of ownership and belonging to the students when they begin Kindergarten in 2021.

The support, enthusiasm and engagement from the Scotts Head community has been overwhelming. The Little Whales Transition to Kindergarten Program has become a rite of passage for families and their children. It has become part of community culture for children and families to experience a longer, more comprehensive, informative and supportive transition to school. Students of SHPS who were a Little Whale, feel very proud for participating and graduating from the program and they anticipate with excitement their siblings becoming a Little Whale in the future.

Our Little Whales journey so far has been so exciting, diverse and incredible. To have the opportunity to be with families working together on a common goal, school readiness! Which is absolutely crucial to a child’s first year at school!

Next week will be our last week of Little Whales for 2020. Thanks to Lifetime Connect staff Shoshona and Brandon and our outstanding school team of Bettina Core, Tim McCormack and Helen Pedrola for giving our students and families the best start possible.

The Funtastic Fete

The Funtastic Fete was a great success with the Year 6 leaders leading the way in managing all the activities. Everyone had a lovely time with the obstacle blow up course, certainly a favourite. Thanks to Mrs B for all the time and energy that you put in to make it such a great day for all. Thanks to Bu Emi for creating a fun YouTube clip of the day https://youtu.be/LSouzWzljRQ.

Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations at SHPS

On Wednesday 18 November the school held NAIDOC activities lead by Uncle Ritchie, Ricky, Conan, Henry, Tegan, Joey and Mirranya.

Throughout the day classes joined Uncle Ritchie for traditional Aboriginal games.

Henry ran a traditional game that taught the students the importance of teamwork and communication.

In the Kindergarten classroom there was music and song. Two groups joined Ricky in the Kinder classroom to listen to some Aboriginal music from around Australia and then learnt a song in Gumbagnggirr language.

Joey and Mirranya started painting a mural on Wednesday for Learned Leaders with Brylee's group.  We were painting the background.  One side was night and the other side was day.  The mural will have Australian native animals that we can find wandering around in the day and night.  By Joey

I ran the clay making group which was pretty successful. Everyone listened and made some amazing creations.  We made turtles, koalas, bilbies and many more.  By Tegan

Last week for my activity I got some ochre and di face painting, native Aboriginal symbol with Zaki and Charlotte's group and then I told them about the native spirits of this land.  By Conan

Last week on Thursday I ran an activity.  It was a mural that Joey and I did together.  So the mural was about day and night.  So what happens in the day so its like rainbows and the ski is midday.  the night is about brow jacks all things that happen at night!  By Mirranya.

All the staff were impressed by the leadership shown by Conan, Henry, Tegan, Joey and Mirranya.  They were calm and confident leaders.

Layang-Layang (Kites)

This term K-2 have been learning about shapes in Indonesian. After reading a story about kites and naming the different shapes, they got to make their own. They chose a colour for the kite (layang-layang) and the tail (ekor) then decorated it with drawings. Lastly they got to fly their kites - and it was the perfect windy day for it! Here is a photo of some of the Kinder students with their kites. They are also learning a song about kites, "Bermain Layang-layang" - find it on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvvVz6Zzwa4
