Term 2 Week 7: Monday 31st May 2021

Principal's Message

Last week's Disco was a fantastic success thanks to the efforts of many generous parent helpers and teachers supporting the students in the MPA. Thank you to the parents who were just so cooperative with drop off and pick up on what was a very chilly night outdoors. The children had a wonderful time dancing and having a great time together with their friends. It was great that we were able to hold such an event for the children after the challenges of the last year or so.

This year, July 26, we are planning to host our Grandparents' Day event which is always a highlight for our community. Make sure that date goes in your calendar. We will post more details closer to the day. Since I last wrote to you, our students completed their Naplan assessments in Years 3 and 5. The students were well prepared and went into the whole experience quite calm and confident in general.

The students are again preparing for their Student-Led Conferences. This has become a real learning highlight for them and all involved. They are a tremendous and powerful contributor to student learning success. More details around scheduling for this will soon follow.

With appreciation for your ongoing support,

Stephen Dowd

Debating Week 6

Debate Topic: That the Internet is more harmful than useful (MIPS were the affirmative team).

On Tuesday, 27th May, 4 debaters from Mary Immaculate debated against Our Lady of the Rosary, Kellyville. The team showed respect for the opposing school and their debating team. All students represented our school with pride.

The first speaker was Lillian D, the second speaker was Zoe B and the third speaker was Ryan C, with the refuting speaker being Allegra G.

Lillian spoke about how the internet has a negative impact on a person's mental health, how influencers can give unrealistic standards to people using social media, and how the internet can have a negative impact on a person's education.

Zoe spoke about how online predators are harmful, the negative effects of cyberbullying and how hackers and viruses can be detrimental to our society. She also had 2 rebuttals and presented them well.

Ryan talked about misinformation and the negative effects, and also strongly refuted and summed up our team’s case.

The debating team tried their hardest during the debate. Unfortunately, in a close debate with a difference of four points - we did not win this week. Congratulations to the entire Debating Team for their collaborative effort and representation on the day.

Allegra G, Lillian D, Ryan C and Zoe B

Stage 3 Soccer Gala Day

On Wednesday 26th of May Mrs Gotsis and Miss Benjamin had the privilege of taking 14 Stage 3 girls to the Soccer Gala day. The girls played 6 games against other schools from within the Diocese at Jamison Park in Penrith. The girls represented Mary Immaculate with amazing sportsmanship and school spirit. The were undefeated on the day and came home as champions of their pool!

Congratulations to Emma S, Sharnie B, Alexis H, Angelina S, Zoe P, Zara H, Savannah W, Gillian C, Lexi H, Sarah L. Gabriella X, Aleisha B, Witi J and Laura C.

Operation Artworks

46 students were selected to participate in a Visual Arts Workshop on Thursday 20th May.  From this group of talented artists 4 artworks were selected for submission to an exhibition called Operation Artworks 2021. This event is held annually and exhibits more than 800 artworks created by students from Kindergarten to Year 10 in NSW.

The theme of Operation Art is for our students to create an artwork to help cheer up children who are hospitalised. The NSW Department of Education and Westmead Children's Hospital have collaborated to implement this wonderful innovation.
