Term 2 Week 8 - Issue 9

From the Principal

Synergy Dance Festival

Last Thursday night I was very lucky to see our support unit dance group perform at the Synergy Dance Festival that was held at Penrith. They did an amazing job and I even received an email from a parent from another school passing on their congratulations. I would like to thank Miss Frank, Mrs Alley and Ms Ward for giving up their time to get the students ready for the event.

Congratulations-Area Cross Country

I would like to wish Lyla Reading and Tayem Reading all of the best as they represent Castle Hill PSSA Zone at the Sydney West Area Cross Country Carnival tomorrow.

Multicultural Public Speaking Competition

Tomorrow our school will be holding the Zone Multicultural Public Speaking Competition Final. I would like to wish Tony Fang, Zack Aldridge, Aarush Goyal and Ben Redwood who will be representing our school.

Athletics Carnivals Next Week

We are hoping to have good weather for our Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival (Wednesday 16th June) and our K-2 Carnival (Friday 18th June) which will be held next week. I would like to thank Ms Johnston and Mrs Rooke for their organisation. I would also like to thank the parents who have volunteered to help us on the day.

Winter Uniforms

With the colder weather, it is a reminder that students are dressed warmly in our school uniform. Please make sure that uniforms (especially jackets and jumpers) are labelled with your child’s name. At this time of the year we often have a large pile of unlabelled items within our lost and found section. If it is labelled, it will be easier to return to the rightful owner.

Important Reminder

This is the time of the year that we find an increase in sickness among both students and staff. A room with 20 to 30 other people in it is not the best environment to be in if your child is not well, especially if what they have is contagious. Please keep your child at home if they are unwell and seek medical advice. If they have any flu like symptoms they are still required to be COVID tested and a screen shot of the results sent to the school email, clearing them to return to school.

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2022

If you are aware of any in-area children intending to enrol for next year (who haven’t already done so), please advise them to contact the school as soon as possible to fill in enrolment forms. The school is also part of an online enrolment pilot program and as a result, you are able complete most of the process by visiting https://winstonhil-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/enrolment.html

Year 1 and 2 Excursion to Sydney Zoo

It was good to see the Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoy their excursion to the new Sydney Zoo last week. For our Year 1 students it was their first every excursion. I would like to thank the teachers and parent helpers that attended. I would also like to thank Mrs Coates for organising the excursion.

Voluntary School Contributions Reminder

Annually, we ask parents to support their children’s education through the payment of a voluntary school contribution which is used to provide vital equipment and resources to enrich the educational experience for each student.

Whilst these contributions are voluntary, we rely considerably on them to provide valuable resources for the school.  This year again we ask for a $40.00 for a single student or $50.00 contribution per family.  This can be made by Cash, Cheque or using the online payment system (P.O.P).

I stress that payment of the school contribution is a matter by individual parents and carers to decide and is entirely voluntary. Our school would greatly welcome your contribution, as this will enhance the resources made available to all our students.

P&C

The next P&C meeting will be held at 7:30pm in the staffroom tonight.  Mrs Faulks will be discussing the role of the Learning and Support Teacher within the school. All welcome!

SRC Fundraiser

The SRC students from Years 2 to 6 met last week and voted on ‘Beanie for Brain Cancer’ fundraiser for this term. This fundraiser will be on Thursday 24 June, where students will wear a beanie and bring in a gold coin donation to support the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF).  This MHF is a Non-Profit, Health Promotion Charity and all donations will go into much needed research for treatments or cures for brain cancer. We thank you in advance for your generosity towards the MHF.

A note will be sent home with more information about this fundraiser closer to the date.

Taxi Bay Safety

In order to provide a safe pick-up and drop-off zone for our students, parents are asked to take note of the following rules for using the Taxi bay area.

·         Taxi Bay is a ‘kiss-and-drop’ zone. Parents are asked to remain in their car while dropping off their children and promptly exiting the Taxi Bay area to avoid traffic congestion on Junction Rd.

·         Only students from the Support Unit can be dropped off at the Taxi Bay between 8:30-8:45am.

Other students may be dropped off between 8:45am-9:00am.

We appreciate your cooperation and support in this very important matter, for the safety of our students and staff.

This fortnight’s PBL focus is about being respectful. Students are reminded to always use nice manners and speak kindly to others. Posters will be put up around the school to emphasise this fortnight’s focus.

Synergy Public School's Dance Festival 2021

Following auditions during Term One, our Support Unit Dance Group was successful in achieving a place to perform amongst many other Public Primary and High Schools at the Synergy Dance Festival during Weeks 7 and 8.

The Synergy Dance Festival provides public school students with the opportunity to perform Dance in a professional theatre environment. It is an inclusive festival for all ages, genders, experience and schools. This opportunity provides a platform to showcase Dance as a performing art within the guidelines of the K to 12 Dance syllabus and to appreciate the collaborative effort of school teachers, students, parents in presenting dance performances.

Our students had a fantastic time at the rehearsal and Evening Performance on Thursday 3rd June and are looking forward to their final Matinee performance on Wednesday 9th June this week.

Library News

New Carpets in the Library

The library was out-of-bounds for students during last week due to new carpets being laid in the library. We apologise for the disruption to normal library activities due to this.

Library Book Return

Recently there has been a high number of students with overdue library books on their account. If everyone could please aim to return their library books on time – this would in turn allow others fair access to library resources.

The Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC)

The Premiers Reading Challenge 2021 is still on and will finish on Friday August 20, 2021. Congratulations to all the students who have already completed the challenge.

Our K-2 students are busy reading PRC books in the library and in class.  Once they complete reading thirty books Mrs Hastha will enter them online as a whole class.

Debating 2021

The 2021 Premier’s Debating Challenge is underway! One of our debating teams, Winston Hills Gold, have had their first round debate as part of the Premiers’ Debating challenge. They were the negative team in a debate against Crestwood Public School on the topic ‘that primary schools should have a three-day weekend’. Both teams had great ideas but it was Crestwood who won the debate. Both our Green and Gold teams are looking forward to some more up coming debates.

Our Winston Hills Gold team is:
