No.26 Fortnightly - 26 November 2021

From Our Staff

Eugene Roodt, Secondary Coordinator

It is difficult to believe that we are so close to the end of the year. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the second semester that was so greatly impacted by lockdown. The impact of lockdown was felt through our school and sadly through the many missed opportunities in this time for our students.

I do want to focus on the amazing teaching that our teachers still managed to do through the online classes. It is much harder to teach when we do not have the students physically present, and I want to commend all Emmaus staff for the innovative way they kept learning interesting and for their diligence in leading student learning in this time.

At the start of Term 3 we were looking forward to a number of events that had to be cancelled. Our Science and Engineering team missed out on competing in the state final in Newcastle. At the time when lockdown started we were the highest qualifying school in New South Wales and the ACT. This in itself is a remarkable performance from Mr Peter Willis and his team. Well done.

After a very soggy and wet athletics carnival, we had a big number of students looking forward to zone and eventually ACT finals. This did not happen, but Mrs Thompson did provide our students with the option of entering the virtual zone competition where many students did well and gave a good reckoning of themselves.

Every year we celebrate our performing arts with MADD night. Plans for this night were well underway and again it had to be cancelled. The good news, however, is that we can now look forward to having a musical next year. We pray that this will provide our students with an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents on stage.

Getting our students back on campus at the start of Term 4 was one of the highlights of the year. It was great to see how friendships and social interaction is such an important part of life for students. From this we learned that our students enjoy the interaction with their peers and teachers and that we should always value this. It is therefore my prayer that we will have a year in 2022 that is not disrupted but where our students can come to school and learn in an environment where they can be nurtured.

I want to wish all our families a safe and blessed Christmas season. Please remember to keep the reason for Christmas front and center in your thoughts and celebrations. God bless.

Does Your Child Suffer from Hay Fever?

Dear Parents,

As you know, we are sending students with cold symptoms home from school.  We recognize that can be difficult in ‘hay fever season’.  If your child suffers from hay fever, please let the front office and the classroom teacher know if they are going to need to take an antihistamine at school.  Medication can be left at the front desk, clearly labelled with the child’s name and instructions for dose and time to be taken. Parents will be asked to complete an "Authorisation to Administer Medication" form. This form is available on the Skoolbag App in EFORMS.

  • Please DO NOT PARK in the Bus Zone or neighbors’ driveways
  • Please stop and give way to pedestrians at the crossings.

Remember that driving very slowly in this car park is a key to the ongoing safety of our pedestrians. Finally, please keep the speed at a maximum 10km/h in the car park. Thank you for your cooperation.

Interschool Spelling Bee

On Thursday 18th November 14 students across K to 6 participated in the Interschool Spelling Bee.  This is usually conducted face to face at Canberra Christian School annually.  This year we participated via Zoom.  The Schools that participated alongside Emmaus were Canberra Christian School, Trinity Christian School and Covenant College.

I was very proud of all the Emmaus students that participated this year.  Each child took their spelling role very seriously and there were a lot of nerves to settle and some very resilient students.  Each year group ended up spelling words that were well beyond their spelling age and every participant should be proud of their achievements.

The participants for this year were:

Kindy – Oliver Ceasis and Arthur Glanville

Year 1 – Angus Power and Caleb Wallis

Year 2 – Daniel Kim and Bethany Jenson

Year 3 – Edward Sutherland and Noah Day

Year 4 – Charity Hasibaun and Alicia Cheng

Year 5 – Ellie O’loughlan and Rianna Munjal

Year 6 – Caden Weatherstone and Luke Johnston

The place getters from Emmaus were Oliver Ceasis 2nd, Arthur Glanville 3rd, Daniel Kim 3rd, Edward Sutherland 2nd, Charity Hasibaun 1st, Alicia Cheng 3rd, Rianna Munjal 2nd, Caden Weatherstone 2nd and Luke Johnston 3rd.

SRC Christmas Hamper Appeal

Supporting Canberra City Care

This year Emmaus Christian Schools SRC have chosen to support Canberra City Care’s Christmas Hamper Appeal.

Canberra City Care provides practical help for people in the local community who are  experiencing financial hardship. Each year they provide Christmas hampers to the community to help ease the burden that the Christmas season can bring.

Emmaus students held a Free Dress Day at school on Friday, 19 November 2021, and collected 380 pancake mixes and 272 chips containers for the hampers.

A big Thank You to all the students that have contributed to helping make someone’s Christmas a little brighter.

A note from Randy Albrecht , Operations Manager of Canberra City Care.

"I just wanted to thank you again for your amazing support and co-ordination with our Community Christmas Hampers. It was great to have the students in to help us pack, it made the task very manageable."
