Kyneton High School

Newsletter

Welcome to the new-look KHS News!

We want  to offer the KHS community a shiny new way of keeping up with everything happening at the school, and we hope you like the new format.  It may look a little rough around the edges to begin with but we're working hard on the polish so please stick with us!

KHS : Face freshly scrubbed and ready to welcome you back

From the Principal

Welcome to our students, staff and school community to the first edition of the new Kyneton High School newsletter format.

We have started the 2021 school year full of optimism and the learning programme has settled into a positive, productive rhythm.  We have celebrated the values of our school – Excellence, Respect, Diversity and Sustainability - in year level and whole school assemblies, with student leadership at the forefront.

This year we have three priorities in our Annual Implementation Plan: Learning Catch-up and Extension, Happy, Active and Healthy Kids, and Connected Schools.  These priorities acknowledge the continuing challenges facing our communities and reflect our determination to ensure that students reach their potential in a safe, caring and vibrant learning environment.

This year we are revitalising the House system with a focus on students engaging in activities that promote wellbeing, relationships and community.  We look forward to the regular lunchtime activities that will be organised and run by the House Leaders.

Our Year 7 Family Evening, held on Wednesday, was thoroughly enjoyable and a great opportunity for staff and parents to meet each other.  Thank you to our Year 7 Leader, Cassi Gunter, and our Lead Teacher for School Culture, Mr Hill, for their excellent organisation of this event.

We welcome a number of new staff to the Kyneton High School team:

Teachers: Dr Jane Strickland, Mr Ryan Eddy, Ms Chloe Nguyen, Ms Quyhn Ho, Mr Julian Bedford, Mr James Shepherd-Turnbull, Mr Ben Costello, Ms Claire Dalley.

Education Support: Ms Rebecca Nardella, Mr Tom Lamb, Mr Mathew Kilender.

Business manager: Mr Kevin Tootell.

I would like to wish everyone in our school community the very best for a successful and fulfilling year ahead.

Ana Rees

Executive Principal

Welcome to our Year 7 families

Dear Parents and Carers of our wonderful Year 7s

What a great start to the year! Our year 7s were welcomed into the KHS family at our assembly last week. The Year 12s created an awesome ‘guard of honour’ for them to run through.

I’m sure there were many weary students on the weekend as they grapple with all the new routines they need to learn at high school. We have all been so impressed with their resilience and great attitude to learning. I have received so many positive comments about the Year 7s from their teachers.

Guard of honour

Year 7 2021

It was lovely to see so many parents and carers at the welcome evening on Wednesday night. It was such a fantastic opportunity to get to know you all and learn more about your child.

Just a reminder that the Year 7 Camp is coming up on the 3rd of March. We expect all students to attend this amazing camp. It is the perfect opportunity to get to know each other and build strong relationships. Please complete the form on XUNO. If unable to access XUNO, please message me and I will send a hard copy home with your child.

On behalf of all the Year 7 Homegroup teachers, again, welcome to Kyneton High School and please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any problems or concerns. We are here to help and assist your child to achieve their best and reach their full potential. We look forward to working with you all.

2021 Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP)

The Victorian Department of Education has prioritised funding for high ability students called the Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP).  This exciting initiative started last year in term four with one of our students selected to work in the English area.

This term, two more of our students have been selected to work on the English VHAP program where they will meet online other pupils from surrounding secondary schools.

The VHAPs that the department is delivering targets the specific strengths of the students as identified in a variety of test indicators.  These indicators are decided by the Education Department.

This new program aligns with the Student Excellence program (previously known as the Gifted and Talented Program) with the aim to encourage staff and students to challenge each other and themselves academically.

If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact us.

In doing so, you will have the opportunity to meet your student’s teachers. They will be able to give you a rundown of course expectations, assessment task requirements and timelines, helpful hints for success and an exam outline. These staff members will become a visible face to contact when things become stressful or when you need to clarify issues /seek advice.

Macedon Ranges Youth Ambassador Program

About the program

The Macedon Ranges’ Youth Ambassador Program (MR YAP) is an annual program for young leaders connected to the Macedon Ranges, aged between 15 and 25. The Youth Ambassadors Program was established in 2011 and has been a critical driver and enabler of youth leadership in the region, with almost 100 students from years 11 and 12 completing the program. Youth Ambassadors gives a voice to young people in the Shire, empowering our next generation of leaders to tackle community issues that matter to them, and connecting the group to Council to make a genuine and sustainable difference in the Macedon Ranges.

The program involves 8-10 participants who want to make a genuine difference in the community; influencing decisions, leading projects, attending leadership activities, hosting events, driving the change they want to see.

VHAP Masterclass online presentation

On Thursday, 17th December, students selected by the education department took part in the online Victorian High- Ability Program (VHAP) Masterclass for cluster schools in the region.  High Ability Practice Leaders (HAPLs) and students from Roxburgh College, Sunbury College and Kyneton High School were involved in discussions comparing aspects such as government in utopian and dystopian societies.

Mary-Anne Thomas MP, Labor Member for Macedon, also joined the video conference, spoke and inspired everyone with her own views of a utopian society.

Ms Thomas told the group that she enjoyed reading novels about dystopian society as a young person (just as students in the group had read and discussed the novel, “Hive” in their VHAP studies during the term).

Ms Thomas spoke about her vision of a fairer world and this was her driving factor in wanting to be involved decision making and politics.  Ms Thomas explained the Golden Rule – the basis of all religions - states “do to others what you would have them do to you” and said this was very important in establishing a society that was more utopian.

At the end of her presentation, Ms Thomas answered student questions and encouraged everyone to be our best selves and strive for a fairer world.

On behalf of the schools that took part in the Masterclass, we thank Ms Mary-Anne Thomas for her time and efforts in preparing and delivering such an informative and thought provoking presentation.

Masterclasses will be run at the end of each term during 2021.

We hope more schools will be involved in the future.
