Dear Parents & Community Members,

As I warmly welcome everyone (especially new families) to the new school year and look forward to the success our student will enjoy in 2022, the cloud of COVID still hangs over our heads.  As you will be aware, the Department of Education has been undertaking significant preparation to ensure schools are as safe as possible.  This includes dehumidifiers in common areas and some teaching areas, a complete review of ventilation across the school, provision of an air quality monitor and an assurance that the school will be supported if there is an adverse finding.

Our school opened with over 420 students from Kindergarten to Year 6.  While we welcomed Mrs Kristel Rollings back from parental leave, we also welcomed the following new teachers to our school; Mrs Rebecca Rick (Year 5), Mrs Emma Senior (Year 1/2), Miss Georgia Buck (Pre-primary), Mrs Jessica Linehan (Kindergarten) and Mrs Karolien Appeldoorn (French).

On a personal note, I will be undertaking shoulder surgery on Tuesday (February 8) and not returning to school for the balance of term.  Mr Matthew Pinkard has been appointed Principal for this period of time and has already visited the school on several occasions to meet with staff and become familiar with school planning and processes.

Important Information

Staff Carpark

The safety of our students is of paramount importance, including their commute to and from school.

The staff carpark is for staff parking only and not to be used for student drop off in the morning or pick up in the afternoon.  Please use the Kiss and Ride parking bays or park further down Doveridge Drive in the marked roadside bays.  There is additional parking along Glengarry Drive and Alfreton Way.

We thank you for considering the safety of all children.

Health and Hygiene

Is your child feeling unwell?

Please do not send your child to school if they are at all unwell.  A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff.

Any child who demonstrates or complains of being unwell will be removed from the classroom, isolated and parents/carers contacted.

Our school is well stocked with hand sanitiser.  This has been provided to all work areas (including classrooms) and children are expected to “sanitise out / sanitise in” at all times.  Cleaning of hands following toilet use is also instructed.

Glengarry Drive Student Crossing

The Traffic Warden who worked at the Children’s Crossing on Glengarry Drive near Bracadale Avenue, Duncraig resigned at the end of 2021.  Unfortunately, due to the huge shortage of Traffic Wardens this year, we have no relief staff available to cover the position.  We will be in touch as soon as we have an available Traffic Warden.

If any Parents/Grandparents are interested in becoming a Traffic Warden they can contact the Children’s Crossings Unit direct on 6274 8731.  An application pack can be sent to them.  If they are successful in applying for the position and pass their training, they can be placed at this crossing, if it is one of our unmanned crossings only.  It is also a paid position which does not affect a pension too much if employment is taken up.  It would be highly recommended that any potential candidate on a pension contact Centrelink to have a chat.  The current pay rate is around $25.58 per hour - two hours per day/five days per week.

To become a Traffic Warden, we require the applicant have access to email, a full driver’s license with access to a vehicle and be able to work the full 10 shifts per week - one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon.  Any applicant signed up in this manner, who is a part of the school community, must reside within a 10km radius of their crossing/school.

Once the application has been submitted, it will commence the application process which involves a background check through WA Police Force Personal Security Vetting Unit.  If they are supported they will be sent a medical assessment to take to their doctor which will need to be paid for by the applicant and reimbursed by the Children’s Crossings Unit - up to $70.00.  Once they have passed the medical assessment they will be invited to attend State Traffic Operations in Midland for a training day which will last for about 4 – 5 hours.

She was so over whelmed on her last day and hopes she thanked everyone for their well wishes.  Heather will miss the Glengarry School community and intends to visit again soon.

Interschool Tennis Competition

The Interschool Tennis Competition was held on Friday 10th December 2021 at Sorrento Tennis Club.

Glengarry Primary School had 16 students attend and compete in all 3 events.  It was an awesome competition with 8 primary schools in the Joondalup district competing in the event.  The buzz around the Tennis club was electric with so many parents and students supporting the event.

This was a tournament filled with so much fun and excitement.  It was great to see the Glengarry students play with such enthusiasm despite a number of them having very little tennis experience.  All the students tried hard and there were some great matches.

A number of parents also stepped up to organise the student’s providing equipment, guidance and help with scoring.  There was additional support by some of the kids with more tennis experience to assist their peers and some enthusiastic parents cheering from the sideline.

Glengarry Primary School was placed 7th out of the 8 Schools that entered.  That is a credible result for a first-time entrance and also that Glengarry is the only primary school that does not participate in the School Tennis programme run by Instyle Tennis from Sorrento Tennis Club.

The students involved are commended for their efforts as they represented their school with pride, enthusiasm and grace.
