Mount Ousley Public School News

A small school with big opportunities.

Term 1 Week 10, Thursday 1st April 2021

Principal's Report

WOW, the term has now come to an end and we have learnt so much! As a school we have had an amazing term together. Our students have been engaged in rich lessons across all areas of the curriculum and our teachers have learnt new strategies for teaching reading and enriching all lessons through high quality texts.

It has been an absolute pleasure to welcome our families back into the school grounds for pick up and drop off each day, as well as for special events such as cross country and the Easter Hat parade. It was so wonderful to see all of the families at today's parade, thank you for coming and making this event special for your children. Congratulations to our Easter raffle winners, Zoe, Jett, Lawler family, Seton family and Fikkers family, I am sure those delicious chocolates will be enjoyed by all over the coming days.

We are looking forward to increasing parental and community presence in the school for a wide range of events and over the course of the year.

The P&C have already been very busy organising a hot cross bun drive and today the notes for our annual pie drive are in your child's bag. The money raised from these activities will go towards improvements around our school. I would like to thank our outgoing P&C treasurer Mr Josh Silver, your dedication to the role over the past 6 years has been amazing! Thank you.

As we look towards Term 2, things will not be slowing down. We have ongoing professional learning for all staff and many fun and exciting lessons and experiences for all our students. We look forward to your continued positive relationships with us and building new and exciting ways to strengthen these partnerships.

Have a wonderful and safe Easter holiday.

Naplan Online

Students in years 3 and 5 will undertake the annual Naplan assessments during weeks four and five next term. We have experimented with the online platform, which was largely successful, there were a few small problems that we are working on solutions for. To help us in this, we are asking that you download the lock-down browser to your child's device and have a set of head phones that they are comfortable using. We have trialed the earbuds that we have here at school, and these were not comfortable for many of our students. In doing these two things your child will feel more relaxed during the assessments.

Follow this link for the technical requirements for the lockdown browser. https://www.assessform.edu.au/layouts/Technology/LockedDownBrowser.aspx

Attendance

Thank you to all the families for updating us when your child is going to be away or has been away. Today notes will be sent home asking for an explanation for any absences that we have outstanding for this term. If you could either return the note next term or respond through our school bag app we would really appreciate it. This graph demonstrates our whole school attendance rate. At the moment what this means is that approximately a quarter of our students are negatively impacted in their learning and wellbeing due to a large number of whole and part day absences. Of course, if your child is sick you must keep them home and notify the office. We do ask that appointments and after school activities are scheduled at times that do not impact on your child's learning.

Opportunity Class placement 2022

Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates of their own academic standard. These classes help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised teaching methods and materials.

Parents apply when their children are in Year 4. Successful students are offered placement, and if the parents accept the offer, the students attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at the relevant public school. This is a two-year placement program and there is no provision to apply for Year 6 entry only. In the majority of cases, students who accept a place in an opportunity class will leave their current school to attend the school with the opportunity class.
