From the Principal

Thank You

It is so hard to believe that the school year is almost over. I want to take this opportunity to say: -

·         Thank you to parents, carers and members of our wider community who have encouraged and supported all of our students to set themselves high expectations and reach high standards in academic achievement, sporting, cultural, community citizenship, employment and training.

·         Thank you to our students for giving your all every day and not only setting goals for yourselves but exceeding them.

·         Thank you to our whole school and wider community, together we faced and met challenges in 2020 that we had never experienced before.

It is for these reasons that each and every day our school staff are thankful for the careers we have chosen. I urge you to peruse our school newsletters from the past year as they are a detailed recount of how every minute of every day of 2020 our students have achieved and continued to nurture their minds to become lifelong learners and strong community citizens.

Farewell to Staff in 2020

Saying farewell and thank you as staff move on is always hard and words always seem so inadequate. Let it be said to all that are leaving us this year, your impact on our school community will resound forever. Our heartfelt thoughts and best wishes to you and your families, as your journey takes you in new directions and challenges. You have left a space in the hearts of students, parents, carers and the community. We wish you all the very best. Farewell to: -

Annette McLean – Guidance Officer. Annette came to us from Goondiwindi in 2018.  During her time here, she has fully immersed herself in our school culture of wellbeing and spent many countless hours with our students, parents, carers, community agencies, members of our Wellbeing Team and our staff ensuring that students at our school are heard and support plans are developed to underpin their success.  Annette’s compassion and care for our students and staff will be truly missed.

Adam Zuurbier- Adam came to us in July of this year.  In a very short time his teaching experience, expertise and calm professional manner made him an invaluable member of our teaching team and well respected by his students. Adam, we thank you for your time at Miles SHS and wish you the very best for 2021.

Welcome to Staff in 2021

Next year we will welcome Bree to Miles SHS.

Bree Jenko – Teacher of Science, Maths, History and English. Bree has already spent a day out here in Miles and is keen to commence in 2021.

Be safe and see you all in 2021

From the Acting Deputy Principal

2020, what a year! Today students are at the pool for the last day of our Excellence Program. As always our students have shown a high level of engagement and great behaviour as they have worked their way through a wide range of activities. Now that the school year is concluding, we get to start looking forward to 2021 and the festivities that ensue. I would like to take the time to wish everyone a safe, happy and relaxing break. It is important that students take the time to stop and unwind from the year. This enables them to come back fresh and ready to learn next year.

The first day of school will be Wednesday, 27 January 2021 and will see a new round of activities and classes. On the school website the events calendar has been updated with proposed dates for next year. This calendar will be updated as more information is received and new events are added. In the mailed information over the school holidays you will receive the book list which is also available on the school Facebook page. This enables you to be prepared for school on the first day. I look forward to seeing all our students safe and ready to learn in 2021.

Term 4 2020

Year 6 Transition Days Week 9 Term 4

Food and Fibre - Mr Desjardins

The Year 6s had a fun afternoon in the kitchen as they baked fresh scones. No smoke alarms were set off, so… SUCCESS! I hear some parents loved them enough that they are expecting more scones to be made at home. I wish the Years 6s all the best in continuing their scone-making adventures!

Science - Mr Van Zyl

The year 6 group played a little bit with fire in Science during their transition day. The objective of the activity was to identify a few chemicals based on the colour of the flame it produced when being burned.

The students worked in groups of four, but each student had the opportunity to use a Bunsen burner and burn the chemicals on a paddle pop stick. Safety was our top priority and all students wore eye protection while conducting the experiment.

English - Miss Clayton

On Monday the 30th of November, Year 6 students from a range of primary school came to Miles State High School to participate in a transition day. One of the activities that the students participated in was a short experience of High School English. Students participated in creating a visual story board from a song that was explored in class. The students looked at a song as a form of poetry and identified and explained what the composer was communicating through the piece.

Year 7 Language

What made you interested in learning Chinese language?

If you are a beginner Chinese learner, you will struggle to learn it as you are not familiar with it. To inspire more students to learn Chinese positively, I have tried to use Music to open their heart for a new language, Chinese.

I remember my high school music teacher said that, “Music is a language of soul. People can listen to a song in an foreign language, but they still feel its vibrancy and momentum.” Therefore, I taught one of my Year 7 class how to sing a Chinese Pop Song to gain their interests.

Another main reason to use Music to encourage them to learn is because majority of students feel stress in learning a new language. They have a lack of confidence to know that they could learn it. So, I believe Music is another tool that could make them feel relax and excited to learn Chinese language and culture.

Week 10 Excellence Week

The Year 7-9 students put their maths skills to the test in our Scavenger Hunt. Deciphering Cartesian map co-ordinates, interpreting the campus map, and searching high and low in the correct area to find their tokens, students had fun finding the treasure tokens.

Mr Desjardins

Students in literacy completed a cooking exercise with Mr Zuurbier, in Miss Clayton's class room students completed a series of games designed to develop communication skills.

In Humanities, students have solved a series of mysteries from the past that have become better known as conspiracy theories. They had to use their deductive reasoning skills in order to develop plausible explanations.

Miss Clayton and Mr Zuurbier

On Monday the students participated in a STEM challenge using Lego.  Each group selected an image of a famous landmark and attempted to construct it using their best problem solving skills.

Screen Printing Project

We are very glad to have an opportunity to collaborate with Miles State School to run the Screen Printing Project. This is a project to screen print t-shirts and donate them to the Miles Kindergarten. It is a very meaningful project, so we have invited a few primary students to participate in this project, and learn how to contribute to the community. Through this positive experience, it has been so much fun for the Year 6 students to connect with the art teacher in Miles State High School and understand what they could learn in the High School Art Class.
