Principal's Message

Dear Community

What a fantastic week we have had celebrating Book Week this week! We have enjoyed visits from several authors, the students have participated in a Book Cover competition, and of course we finished the week with our annual book character dress up parade this morning. Our students looked amazing and I was particularly impressed with the creativity that went into some of this year’s costumes! Photos will be posted on our social media accounts over the weekend.

The excitement keeps up next week with our Sports Carnival week! 2022 Enrolments

We are currently starting to collate our student numbers for 2022. We only have a few spots left in Kindy, so if you are aware of anyone who is yet to enrol, could you please remind them to do so. Also, any current Kindy students who have not yet re-enrolled for pre-primary next year, could you please do so asap. Finally, if you are planning on leaving the school next year, could you please let the office know so that we can factor it into our planning.

As always, if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to call or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au

Shed 5 Needs You!!!

Shed 5 is one of our most popular creative spaces. It was introduced to enable 'loose parts' play for all of our students, particularly during recess and lunch, but also as part of lessons. The Shed is filled with all sorts of goodies to feed the imagination, but regularly needs topping up. That's where you come in; if you are doing a clear out, please consider if you have items that could be used in Shed 5 and bring them along to the front office. Items we are looking for include (but not limited to):

·         pots and pans

·         plastic pipes

·         clean tyres - all sizes

·         ropes

·         tarps

·         lengths of fabric

·         cushions/blankets

·         off-cuts of carpet/fake grass

PLEASE ONLY SEND CLEAN, UNBROKEN ITEMS. PLEASE DO NOT SEND TOYS OR PLAY EQUIPMENT.

They can be dropped off at the Pre-Primary classroom or the office.

Book Week 2021

Wow! What a fabulous Book Week this year!

It has been such a busy week, with Author visits and storytelling sessions.

The week has culminated in a fabulous character parade, whole school song and our book cover competition winners being announced.

The Book Cover Competition winners are:

K1- Zac G

K2- Gabe G

PP- Lila M

Yr 1- Jagger O

Yr 2- Lucca M.L

Yr 3- Tate H

Yr 4- Lo Relm C

Yr 5- Grace C

We also had 2 Creativity Awards. These students reimagined the story. They took the blurb on the back of the book and extended the story to put a twist into their book covers.

Creativity Award winners are:

Josh M

Mia K

We had so many amazing entries for the book cover competition, it was so hard to pick just 1 winner for each year. Congratulations to all our entries on such amazing book covers.

I was very excited to see so much imagination being put into the costumes this year. I especially loved seeing students dress as Non Fiction book subjects such as Frida Kahlo, Greta Thunberg, Rosa Parks, Dinosaurs and Cleopatra. I wonder what next year will bring…

Your Move Program

Dear school community,

It has been quite a busy time for the Your Move at Scarborough PS with the recent events completed or still on the go, and for the future events that are in the pipeline!

Recently completed:

  • Silly Socks was a great event for getting active and raising funds of a charity.
  • RAC Bike Ed for Years 4 to Year 6 – (Week 2 to week 5).
  • YOUR MOVE Leadership Labs excursion attended by our 10 Your Move Team consisting of the two Year 6’s captains Toloa and Maya; and the Year 6 sustainability leaders: Bianca and Rhana, including my long standing three Year 5 stars: Bradley, Cobie and Ayla.  We have 2021 new recruits: Maddy Room 9, Ines and Loh-Relm Room 12. Mr Bacci has also recently come on board as the Sports, PE & Health member with events linking to some of these things. Also, Cassie (Cobie’s mum) is our parent link to Your Move team. Welcome aboard!

NOTE: We will be looking at recruiting further Your Move students to join the team from Year 4 in Term 1 of 2022!

On the go:

  • Trusty Tuesday and Thursday Active Days Trial is in its 3rd week – watching the data carefully to see which class will win as the most active travellers over 6 weeks! Winners will be announced in week 10.

Future Events in the pipeline:

  • Father’s Day Fuel Free Day with a coffee incentive linked to Friday running club on the 3rd of September 2021 (week 7) – (see separate flyer).
  • Parent Survey: We would love to hear from you! Our first one we did right at the beginning when we first signed up to Your Move, we only received 12 responses. We cannot do this program without our parent community committed! If parents are onboard their children are enthusiastic and devoted to the Your Move program! Please click on the link below to download the survey:

  • Your Move Team: – ‘Treewise’ project pitch to the Mayor of Stirling at the Your Move Leadership Labs – concerns over safety with the overgrown trees on the corner of Hinderwell Street and Harvest Terrace

This is how Your Move works and how we earn points for our school:

As activities are completed and stories are posted on the Your Move website https://www.yourmove.org.au about the activities we just completed, we earn points for our school. From comments received from Your Move Admin, we can receive bonus points and all these points are accumulated through the accreditation levels:

  • Bronze (100-299 points)
  • Silver (300-599 points)
  • Gold (600-999 points),
  • Platinum (1000-1499); and
  • Double Platinum (1500+ points). Points can be redeemed for rewards which can be used to encourage further active travel to school. Scarborough Primary is currently sitting on DOUBLE PLATINUM with 1,663 points. I have just ordered us a Your Move Banner valued at 350 redeemable points. So, when we have events, our Your Move flag will be seen!

Recent stories on the Leadership Labs and using active travel to get to the excursion earned us many points.

FATHER’S DAY STALL

Our super popular Father’s Day stall will be held next week on Wednesday 1 September and Thursday 2 September between 8.30am-8.50am. The average price of the gifts is around $3 and last year we sold out completely so get in quick!  And remember to bring some money to school with you.

WE NEED YOU!

All our fundraising events require many hands to organise them. So, we are asking all SPS families (parents/ grandparents/ carers/ families) to be prepared to put your hand up. You don’t have to be a member of the P&C to help out with the events, but if you have any amazing fundraising ideas we would love to hear from you. Either at a meeting, email or chat to our team.

CANTEEN AND UNIFORM SHOP

Did you know that the P&C also runs the School Canteen and the Uniform Shop? In order for us to keep canteen running and the uniform shop prices low, we rely on volunteers from our school community. This means that WE NEED YOU!

The Uniform Shop is open on Wednesdays between 8.45am-9.15am (yes, only half an hour!) and Canteen is open on Fridays between 10am-12pm. During these times we are in need for more volunteers. Our school is growing and our current small team needs extra support in order to keep these services going. So please check your diary and sign up to help!

We also welcome extended family members to be part of our community, so if you can’t help, perhaps your parents can (-:

The easiest way is to email us with your availability, but feel free to chat to the team personally.

Entertainment Book

Entertainment Book is bringing back the BONUS Gift Cards! For a limited time only, you will receive a BONUS $40 Woolworths, BIG W or Freedom eGift Card when you purchase a Multi City or Multi Plus Membership or a $20 Woolworths, BIG W or Freedom eGift Card when you purchase a Single City Membership between 3:00pm, Wednesday 4 August and 11:59pm, Wednesday 1 September 2021 AEST! That’s a 13-month Membership you will love! Order your membership here https://www.entertainment.com.au/orderbooks/86y129

Containers for Change

We will continue to fundraise through the Containers for Change initiative. The Containers for Change bins can be found at the school entry at Hinderwell Street near the Room 9 Heritage Building. Keep on bringing those empty cans and bottles to support the P&C!

Please note that these bins are not for rubbish but for eligible drink containers only, thank you!

Alternatively, if you wish to donate at a refund point of your choosing you can quote our Scheme ID C10240685. If you prefer to attend a Reverse Vending Machine location please use the barcode at the top of the P&C news. This may be your preference if you have a larger donation and be rest assured that the money goes back to the P&C.

Next Meeting

Our next General Meeting will be held Monday 6th of September at 6.30pm in the school library.
