Weekly Prayer Reflection - Prayer to St Joseph

Humble and loving Joseph, independent and gentle, help us to work hard despite the challenges we face.

Inspire us to love like you, and to recognise the importance of our family, just as you did with your family, Mary and Jesus.

Amen

Ainslie, Alice, Lahni and Luca - Year 6

From the Principal

Welcome to the Term 1 student-edition newsletter.

Our 2021 Mission Goal is that every student in our school will have the opportunity to contribute to the academic and social life of the school, and this newsletter-with-a-difference, is one way of accomplishing this. Thank you to all of the students who contributed to this week’s newsletter messages. I am sure you will agree, that they are more concise, and straight to the point with their messages than the leadership team usually is!

Diocesan Director School Visit

On Monday, our Diocesan Director, Miss Jeffcoat came to visit some of the year levels and to talk to Mrs Jenkinson. Mrs Jenkinson reminded us to be sensible when Miss Jeffcoat was here. We thank Miss Jeffcoat for visiting us and seeing all of the things we have  been up to.

St Pat's Race Day

On Saturday some teachers and students went to the races. The Year 6 helpers (Charlotte, Xander, Luke, Lahni, Aida and Lily) gave out tickets and were dressed up as leprechauns and Irish colleens. They all looked very green. We thank all the people who went to the St Pat’s Race Day who helped raise money for the Catholic primary schools in Rockhampton.

Parent Teacher Interviews

In the last week of term, we are going to have Parent Teacher Interviews. This is when the teachers and parents come together and talk about our learning. It is important for all parents to book an appointment for an interview so that they can see if we are learning or not learning.

(Instructions on how to book an interview can be found below)

Win $100 Voucher - Catholic Identity Surveys

One of the most important things about being a Catholic school in the 21st century is knowing who we are and what purpose we serve. We need to have a clear understanding of our role as a Catholic school.

To assist with this and as an important part of our School Improvement process, St Joseph's Wandal is participating in a Catholic Identity survey which is conducted by Leuven University in Belgium. The research project is aimed at assisting us with understanding how our Catholic identity is expressed in work and practice, as well as supporting plans to further enhance our Catholic Identity for the future. This will be our second lot of data through this project (we first participated in 2016) and we look forward to comparing the growth and changes that have occurrred during the period in between.

All staff at our school, as well as students from Years 5 and 6  will participate in the survey at school. We would also like to give parents a voice by inviting and encouraging you to take part in the survey, which will be conducted online and is not identifiable.

Surveys are now open! Please follow the directions below to access your survey:

Prayer for St Joseph

Year 3J Mass

This Friday, we are celebrating the Feast Day of Saint Joseph, the Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Please join us and Father Matthias in the Hall at 9am for Mass, so we can pray with our patron Saint. We will remember how Joseph was a faithful man who followed God's ways.

Feast of St Joseph (Our patron saint!) Friday 19 March

This week, in Year 1 we made a shrine to remind us of Saint Joseph. A shrine is a holy space to help us pray.

Joseph was Jesus’ Dad on Earth. He is special to us because he is the patron saint of our school and our parish.

This is the year of Saint Joseph. Friday is Saint Joseph's Feast Day, and we will be celebrating with Mass and a Red Rooster lunch!

Year 1 St Joseph Shrines

Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph is a very special man. He was Jesus’ Dad on Earth and Mary’s husband. He was a carpenter and he used wood to make things. We have set up ‘Saint Joseph’s Workshop’ in our classroom so that we can make things like Joseph did. We are excited to celebrate Saint Joseph’s Feast Day on Friday.

Harmony week

In class, we went to the Harmony Day website and learned that almost half of Australians were either born overseas or have parents who were. Australia is made up of lots of people with different backgrounds. We created an acrostic poem using special words associated with Harmony Day. We though Harmony Day was similar to the Catholic Social Justice Teachings we have been learning about in Religion because it is all about treating others how Jesus would treat them.

National Day Against Bullying

In Year 1A we learnt about bullying.

Olivia – Bullying is being unkind over and over.

Ella – We had a paper plate and a tube of toothpaste and everyone had a go at squeezing out the toothpaste. We talked about why we did this.

Oliver – It is empty now, you can’t put the toothpaste back in, it’s impossible.

Hudson – When we bully people it dents their hearts, like the tube of toothpaste.

Archie – When you are being a bully it empties people’s buckets and it also empties your bucket.

Mackenna – We can fill other people’s buckets by being kind.

Ethan – When you bully someone you feel yucky inside and you can’t sleep.

Luke – When you bully someone they don’t want to go to school.

Felix – A good friend doesn’t bully. You feel happy when you are with a good friend.

Raina – When you have no one to play with a friend will come and ask you to play.

Inika – Respecting others is playing with people and including everyone. Say, “Do you want to play with us?”

Tiffany – Respecting others is saying kind words.

Ivy – Respecting others is helping people.

Makenda – Respecting others is being kind.

Kaitlyn – Respecting others is holding hands and being gentle.

Evie – Respect others by not being bullies. Say nice words to people.

Remi – If someone doesn’t have a rubber or pencil, you could share yours.

Teddy – Help someone when they are hurt.

WESTy’s aren’t bullies. Fill up other people’s buckets and you will fill your bucket too and you will feel happy inside.

We have been reading about Allen the Alien who is learning about the do’s and don’ts of being a human. His stories taught us that it is important to share, take turns and to include others.

Our Journey in the Catholic Faith (Sacramental Workshop dates)

If you are preparing for the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist there is a special Mass for you to attend. During this Mass you will join the Priest, out the front, while the congregation prays for you.

The Mass times are:

Saturday 20 March at 6.00pm,

Sunday 21 March at 9.30am, or

Sunday 21 March at 6.00pm.

Year One Book Corner

'The Cow That Swam Out to Sea' written by Pamela Rushby, illustrated by Nicola Hooper

‘The Cow That Swam Out to Sea’ is based on a true story and set in Queensland. We discussed the cover of this book and made the prediction that the cow was going to go on a journey because of the city on the cover. We also noticed the Brisbane Story Bridge on the cover which sparked our interest.

Everyone was silent and absorbed in the story when our teacher read this book as it was so engaging. We were scared for the cow and sat in suspense waiting to hear what would happen to her.

Things we liked about the book were how the cows mooed in different ways, we had to use different expression with our moos as we read. We also liked how the author, Pamela Rushby used ellipses, as we enjoy looking for interesting punctuation.

It reminded us of another story based on a true event, 'A Mummy for Owen'.

We feel this book would be good for people who live in Brisbane, as well as people who have travelled there, as they will see familiar landmarks. We recommend this text for all children over 5 years old, as it is a longer book and we think that they will enjoy it and understand it more. Even big kids will love this book, especially because it is based on a true story.

We give this book 5 stars.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create men who are capable of doing new things.“
