Issue 8: Wednesday, 19th May 2021

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

As we approach the half-way mark of this term I would like to again thank all families for their co-operation with the COVID-19 arrangements that have been introduced and modified as we have progressed throughout the term.  Our school community has been brilliant and co-operated with all of the changes that we have made.

We are still operating under the current COVID operating guidelines and would like to remind you of the following COVID safe strategies:

  • Individuals should stay home when unwell;
  • Promote and practice good personal hygiene;
  • Ensure physical distancing of 1.5 metres between adults, where practicable;
  • Parents are allowed on school sites and in classrooms; provided they:
    • Practice 1.5 metres physical distance between adults where practicable; and
    • follow good hand and respiratory hygiene practices.

We will continue to provide advice if there is any change to the current situation.

NAPLAN 2021

NAPLAN 2021 was implemented very smoothly last week and this week.  Our staff did a great job catering for the changes needed to ensure all our children in Years 3 & 5 had a positive opportunity to succeed.  My sincere thanks go to Mrs Weir and Ms Laverty in particular for their leadership of this significant school event.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

All of our classes have had the opportunity to participate in National Simultaneous Storytime event today.  National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously.  You may like to ask your child to recount today’s story and discuss today’s event with them.

STUDENT LEADERS’ CONFERENCE

Our Year 6 Student Councillors and House Captains are attending the 2020 Grip Leadership Conference tomorrow after it was rescheduled because of the COVID lockdown.  I am sure this will be a very beneficial experience that will develop their leadership skills across the school.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY

A reminder that our next School Development Day is scheduled for Friday, 4th June.  On this day our staff will be participating in professional learning on:

·         1-2-3 Magic behaviour management processes, and

·         Back to Front mathematics approaches.

Your assistance in enabling this day is genuinely appreciated.

Thank you again for your cooperation and commitment to our children.  Have a wonderful fortnight.

FROM THE DEPUTIES DESK

NAPLAN

We have been incredibly proud of the way our Bertram FRREE students, staff and families have approached NAPLAN testing for Year 3 & 5 over the past two weeks. By the end of Wednesday our testing will be complete except for a couple of catch ups for students who were absent on a scheduled assessment day. Every one of our students has come to school prepared to do their best, even though they know there will be questions that will be difficult for them – and that reflects how you, as parents, have responded to this period of national testing.

NAPLAN results will be provided to schools from mid-August to mid-September. The same report format is used for every student in Australia. We will notify you when the reports are being sent home. Individual student results are strictly confidential.

For more information, see Student reports.

If your kindy child is in Koolbardi 1a, 2a or 6a they are welcome to participate in the Colour Fun Run, however you will need to bring them to the oval for a 1:30pm start and remain on the oval for the duration of the event.

PARENTING TIPS

SCHOOL-AGE FRIENDSHIPS: HOW TO SUPPORT THEM

About your child’s school-age friendships

Your child’s world gets bigger when they start school. Relationships with other people – like the children in their class at school – become more important.

Friendships are good for your school-age child’s self-esteem. When your child has good friends, they feel like they belong, their friends care about them and this helps them feel good about themselves.  Friendships help children develop important life skills like getting along with other people and sorting out conflicts and problems. Children with these skills are less likely to have social and emotional difficulties later in life.

School friends and parents: why your child/ren need both

Young children enjoy playing with their friends, but they still need their parents. In fact, during the early school years, family relationships are still the biggest influence on your child’s development. Good family relationships are what your child needs to learn and grow.

Family relationships give your child a stable, safe home base through the ups and downs of making and losing friends. In fact, the care and love you give your child at home helps your child manage other relationships.

If your child is upset at being left out, or has had a fight with a friend, they know that you’re still there for them. You can help them work it out by talking with them about what happened and how they felt. For example, ‘How did you feel when Ali wouldn’t let you play?’ This helps your child learn about their feelings and how to handle them. Sometimes just listening or giving your child a hug can be enough.

Getting to know your child’s friends: why it’s good

Getting to know your child’s friends helps you find out about:

·         some of the important people in your child’s life.

·         who your child is talking about and their personalities.

·         what kind of influence friends have on your child.

·         how your child gets along with their friends.

·         who to invite for playdates and birthday parties.

·         other families with children of a similar age.

If you’re not sure who your child’s friends are, just ask, or watch who they go to in the playground at school. You could also talk with your child’s teacher. If you’re able to help at school sports, in the canteen or in the classroom, this can also give you a chance to see who your child gets along well with.
