From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We are BACK!  There was an excited buzz in the corridors and classrooms yesterday as we all came back together.  I'm sure there were more than a few relieved parents out there as well.  The teachers focused on the children's wellbeing yesterday and are transitioning cautiously to give them time to re-engage with classroom learning.  I think we all found this lockdown a little harder than previous ones.  Thank you to our parents and teachers for their enormous efforts to support our children's learning remotely.

As we navigate back, we still need to adhere to quite a few restrictions.  Parents are not permitted onsite, unless for essential meetings and we have to postpone any transition tours and interviews for now.  We are however, permitted to hold camps and sporting events provided we are the only school attending.

Kind regards,

Olga Lyons, Principal

Learning and Teaching

Catching on Early - Yr 5 Students

The Year 5 children will be undertaking a unit of Personal Development on Fridays in Term 3.  The sessions will be conducted by Elissa Johnson, Moyne Community Health Nurse, with school staff in attendance.

Our first session will hopefully begin on Friday July 30th. The session will be for all Year 5 Students. We will begin with ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’ - the ups and downs of growing up.

Students will be learning about:

  • the physical, social and emotional changes associated with puberty

  • variations in the timing of puberty

  • respecting the feelings of others

To support these conversations I will send home some resources and links for each family.

Wellbeing

CASEA program (CAMHS and Schools Early Action)

The CASEA program will be offered at St Patrick’s Port Fairy Primary School during Term 4, 2021.

The CASEA program has been designed to assist schools and families to support children with their social, emotional and behavioural development. It has been developed to help children in Foundation to Year 3 to understand and express emotions more effectively and to enhance problem solving and relationship skills.   CASEA is a free program and is not compulsory.

The program runs over an 8 week period and consists of a weekly children’s group (1.5 hours), a parent/guardian group (1.5 hours) and teacher consultation.

If you have any questions or would like further information regarding the program please contact: Stephanie Green or Kiera Hardy, CASEA Clinicians, South West Healthcare CAMHS.  Telephone 5561 9100.

If you would like your child to be considered for this program, please complete a consent form, available through the school.  Forms will need to be returned by Friday, 20th August 2021.

School News

Student's Birthdays

The school has had to make a decision regarding student birthdays.  No food, cakes or lollies can be brought into the school to share with their classmates. We have a number of children with allergies and the school needs to ensure everyone's safety.

Birthdays will still be celebrated by their teacher and classmates with a birthday song and recognised at our assemblies.

Working Bee - New Date August 14

We hope the families listed here are able to make the alternative date of August 14.  This working bee is essential to our preparation for the building project due to begin in October.  Janine will message these families to check their availability.

It is understandable at this time that some families may be experiencing financial hardship due to small business closures or downturn in employment.  If paying your school fees is a concern, I invite you to make contact with the school to discuss options.

Camps Sports and Excursion Fund - CSEF

The government has extended the CSEF application deadline for 2021. Families with a valid means-tested concession card, such as a Veteran Gold Card, Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, as well as temporary foster parents, are eligible to apply if they have not done so this year.

There is also a special consideration category for asylum seeker and refugee families.

Please contact the office if you would like to apply for the funding. The extension period for applications ends on Friday 13 August 2021.

Australian Dental Health Victoria

Our school is participating in the Australian Dental Health Victoria program. A dental van will visit the school on Monday November 22. This week School Dental Initiative forms were sent home with your child. This is a voluntary program and if you wish for your child to be part of the program please return your form to your child's teacher by Monday October 18.

Head Lice

The school has been notified of a case of head lice. It is a timely reminder for parents to check their child's head. If you child does have head lice, your child must be treated prior to coming to school. It is also very important that in 7 days time you treat your child again. The most effective way of controlling head lice after the treatment is to use a lice comb to comb through your child's hair to ensure all eggs and lice are removed.

Stay at Home if you are Unwell!

Just a reminder, that if your child is showing any signs of a cold or the flu, they are to stay at home.
