Panania North Public School

Newsletter 3 - 5th March 2021

Principal's Message

This week we held our Annual General Meeting for our P&C. I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you on behalf of our school community to our P&C executive for their commitment, passion and hard work in supporting our students, staff, parents and wider community. 2020 brought us challenges we could never have imagined, their positive support, willingness to think out-side-the-box and to come up with solutions to ensure the things that were important still happened, greatly supported our school community through a year that we will never forget.

Our P&C are an essential and vital team; their value to our school community extends much further than fundraising for resources for our students. , I would like to thank our all our P&C members who have given their voice in consultative decision making, provided feedback, represented our community through the staffing merit selection process, school self–evaluation processes, broad financial management decisions, decisions relating to improvements and school policy decisions.

I would like to congratulate the following parents on their re-election

President - Louise Anthony

Vice President - Daphne Salabogi

Vice President - Joanne Ghookasian

Great news - COVID-19 update for schools!!!

We have now reached over 40 days without community transmission in NSW, and the rollout of the vaccination program is under way. The NSW Government has recently eased restrictions across the state on the advice of NSW Health.

The department has also continued to work with NSW Health to revise the current advice to schools. NSW Health has agreed to the following activities resuming across all schools in NSW from Monday 8th March, 2021:

  • Parents and carers are able to enter school grounds but should continue to follow COVID-safe practices, including social distancing between adults of 1.5 metres.
  • Parents and carers can attend school sporting events. School sporting events should align with requirements for community sporting competitions and training activities in NSW.
  • There are no recommended limits on singing groups in schools, including for in-class educational activities such as repetition, chanting, recitation, or singing activities. Five metres is recommended between a group of performing singers and other people, including the audience and conductor, where practicable.
  • Dancing activities – including dance classes, formals and social events – can proceed, but organisers should comply with any venue restrictions.

No students allowed on school grounds before 8.30am

Unfortunately we have had a growing number of children arriving at school before 8.30am. The front playground is supervised by a teacher from 8.30-9.00am. If you child is at school before this time we will need to contact you and ask you to collect them and return at 8.30am.

We understand the juggling act of getting to work and childcare but the safety and wellbeing of our children comes first.

The YMCA is available for morning care on school grounds.

Swim Scheme

We’ve had so much fun at Swim Scheme this week! We spent a lot of our time in and around the water. Students have learnt water safety and survival skills, so that they can continue to enjoy aquatic activities.

Students were trying their best and really challenged themselves in the pool.

Congratulations to all the PNPS students who participated in Swim Scheme. It was a pleasure to take you all to the pool this week.

Water Week March 8th - 12th

Water Week begins this Monday 8th of March!

As part of our PDH program Panania North Public School will be promoting healthy hydration, by encouraging students to bring in water as their preferred drink.

For the whole week, each class will tally how many bottles of water are brought in and how many times the students refill these bottles during the day.

COVID Intensive Learning and Support Program

Panania North has been granted $120,000 (staffing resource) to implement Intensive Learning Support in response to the interruption to learning due to COVID.

Targeted Student/s /Group

How have targeted students been selected?

  •  Students targeted not usually receive intervention through our learning and support programs and student
  • Assessment data indicates short term, intensive intervention would have great impact.

Data / Strategic Direction

Does this align with our school directions in our new school plan?

  • Our ILS initiative aligns with all our strategic directions including Growth and attainment in literacy, Growth and attainment in numeracy and Positive education.
  • 2020 and 2021 reading assessment data will be used to identify our target students and group according to similar needs.

What data will we use to inform our decision?

The following criteria will be used to select targeted students:

  • Students who are performing between the 25th % and the 50th% on grade norm samples and have made below expected growth in 2020 and initial 2021 reading and numeracy  assessment data.
  • Students who are high potential and have made below expected growth in 2020 and initial 2021 reading  and numeracy assessment data

Targeted Initiatives & Activities and Duration

What initiatives & activities will we use? How long?

Department Policy / Strategy, Research from the Science of Reading and CESE documents have informed and assisted us in determining the effective, high impact strategies for short-term interventions.

Term 1

·                     Whole school student Assessment Weeks 1 – 3

·                     Learning cycle planning Week 4

·                     First targeted intervention – Wks 5-10

Terms 2 -4 Learning Cycles 2 -7 (5 weeks per cycle)

·                     Analysis of previous Learning cycle assessment data

·                     Identification of target group and goals

·                     Small group intervention

·                     Assessment

New Stage 2 Classroom Furniture

New whiteboard desks and coloured chairs have been purchased for our Stage 2 classrooms. The furniture provides greater flexibility for seating options and can be moved to respond to the different learning needs for different tasks. The whiteboard desks create a valuable option for students to collaborate ideas, work out problems and practice for fluency and consolidation of skills.

This functional and agile furnishing solution also looks fantastic.

District Swimming Carnival

Well done to our District Swimming representatives for competing earlier this week. You all did such a great job representing our school!

Congratulations to Lisa T (Yaks), Abigail G (Scorpions), Zach O (Vipers), Cobalt W (Scorpions) and Noah M (Wombats) for making it through in their races to the next round of competition.

Clean Up Australia Day at PNPS

Clean Up Australia inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment.

What was started thirty years ago, by an "average Australian bloke" who had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard has now become the nation's largest community-based environmental event.

A big thank you to all our staff and students for participating in cleaning our school grounds today! Keep up the good work.
