Cootamundra High School Newsletter

Term 1 ‐ Week 6, 2021

PRINCIPAL: Mrs Leesa Daly

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL: Mr Christopher Payne

Principal's Report

A warm welcome is extended to all our new families and in particular our first time Year 7 parents and carers. It was lovely to catch up with so many of you last week at our twilight Year 7 BBQ. Thank you to our Year Advisor, Mr Perry, and his team of helpers for organising and hosting this event. We have been impressed by the way our Year 7 students have transitioned into high school. They have consistently demonstrated our core values of Respect, Responsibility and Excellence through the wearing of our uniform and by their positive behaviour and engagement in the classroom.

It is my great pleasure to introduce new staff to the Cootamundra High School Team including permanent teaching staff: Mr Houston (HSIE), Mr McKenzie (PDHPE), Ms Freeman (Library), Ms Boatswain (Visual Arts) and Ms Callaghan (Ag/Science). We are thrilled that the familiar faces of Mrs Drum (Science) and Miss Fritsch (PDHPE) have joined us as permanent members of staff also. We also welcome Miss Longmore (English), Mrs Watson (Science Lab Technician) and Mrs Tulenew (Home Economics Assistant) to our team in 2021.

An awesome day was had by students and staff alike who attended our Swimming Carnival – glorious weather, great sportsmanship and fun activities enabled all students to enjoy the day. It was fabulous to have parents/carers and grandparents come along and support the kids. Congratulations are extended to the winning Sporting House BALDRY. Miss Fritsch and her team will be hosting our whole school athletic carnival on Thursday 25th March so we look forward to another great day of fun.

Many extra curricula and new opportunities are on offer this term for students to be able to connect, succeed and thrive here at CHS including representative sporting teams, Dance, Student Representative Council, Photography and Art competitions, Cattle Show Team club, Debating and Duke of Edinburgh scheme just to name a few.

Our amazing P&C folk recently hosted the local Bingo Night at the RSL Club, in partnership with Kyle and his team, which was incredibly well supported by the local Cootamundra community. We thank all the businesses in town who provided the P&C with awesome raffle prizes for the night. We made an amazing $1,473.70 which will be used to purchase resources for our students. We meet once a month from 6:30-7:30pm in the school library. A flyer will be out shortly for our P&C AGM – we would love to see some new members at our meetings. Hope to see you there.

Year Advisor’s have been working hard connecting with their cohorts this term and ensuring that our high expectations around behaviour, engagement and attendance are well known by everyone. Fortnightly Year Meetings are enabling this connection and provide the platform for regular wellbeing and advocacy conversations to occur. Year Advisors have particularly enjoyed connecting with our Aboriginal students and their parents/carers as they develop their Personalised Learning Pathways for the year. We look forward to working with our local Police, under the guidance of Snr Constable Mark Hutchinson, as they deliver a Learner Driver program for our Aboriginal ‘L’ plate drivers in Semester 1.

We continue to work on our new School Improvement Plan 2021-2024 and will be seeking ongoing feedback from all stakeholders in the coming weeks. We look forward to hearing your considered thoughts and ideas.

We look forward to the rest of term and all the teaching, learning and leading that will be occurring both inside and outside the classrooms. If you have any queries, concerns or worries please do not hesitate to contact the amazing team at Coota High.

With Kind Regards

Mrs Daly

School Bus Travel

Parents and students are reminded that the school bus arrangement is for students to board the bus at a stop near their house and to travel to their school, in our case Cootamundra High School. Students should only get off the bus at our school, not at other schools in town. This is part of the duty of care shared by the bus companies and by the school to ensure students arrive safely at their school each day.

Concerns have been raised by members of the school community about high school students leaving their bus at the wrong school - this should not happen.

If there is a genuine need for students to run errands for parents we would be happy to discuss and make arrangements on a case by case basis.

Introducing the New Staff at Cootamundra High School

Year 11 Legal Studies

Year 11 Legal Studies have been learning about the origins of Common Law and Statue Law in Australia.

In Week 5, the class participated in a ‘Mock Parliament’ where they had a go at passing the bill ‘There should be no laws for one day each year’ through the Australian political system.

Congratulations to all students for their participation, including Prime Minster Bronte Johnson, Minister for Justice Bailey O’Loughlin, Opposition Leader Kenneth Stanyer, Speaker of the House of Representatives Blake Sloan and Governor-General Katie Berkrey.

Cootamundra High School Swimming Carnival

CHS swimming carnival was held on Thursday 4th February. Staff and students enjoyed the chance to get away from the classroom and engage in the competitive nature of the Swimming Carnival. PDHPE & SLR NEWS

Junior PDHPE

Year 8 are completing an Understanding Nutrition unit this term which sees students critically examine the foods they eat.   Over the last two weeks students have been watching ‘That Sugar Film’ that looks closely at the hidden sugars in the food we eat.  The assessment task later this term will see students creating a healthy sandwich and justifying their ingredient choices.  During practicals, Year 8 are completing a unit on Striking and Fielding which includes practicals such as kickball, T-ball, softball, cricket and French cricket

Healthy Consumers is the focus for our year 9 students.  In this unit of work the students have examined the rights and responsibilities of health consumers including the importance of being honest with health professionals to ensure they get the best treatment. Students have also investigated health services available to them within Cootamundra and now have a greater understanding of the excellent health services that they can access locally.

This term, Year 10 are learning about Road Safety and First Aid.  Over the past few weeks, students have learnt the basics of First Aid including how to perform CPR on our practice manikins and discussed the factors that impact on driver safety including drugs, alcohol, mobile phone use and speeding.  Students have also had the opportunity to complete the ‘Practice Driver Knowledge Test’ in preparation for getting their Learner’s Permits throughout the year.

In terms of practicals, both Year 9 and 10 are focussing on Net and Racquet Sports which includes Volleyball, Tennis and Badminton.

Year 7 practicing their life saving skills and rescue techniques during sport

Senior PDHPE & SLR (Sports, Leisure and Recreation) & Individual Sporting Success

Our Year 11 and Year 12 Sports, Leisure and Recreation students (SLR) are completing a unit on Aquatics this Term.  This unit covers stroke techniques, lifesaving and survival strokes, water safety including water entries and exits and rescue principals and CPR.  Students are also fortunate to put their theory lessons into practice with regular trips to the local pool.

Special congratulations are extended to two CHS students who are excelling in their chosen sports.  Matt Walsh has been selected in the Riverina Boys Basketball Team and Cooper Emonson who has been selected in the Canberra Raiders Under 17s Harold Matthews Squad.  Well done boys!

MULTIMEDIA

Year 9 Multimedia have been looking at computer accessibility features that assist people in using technology. Thanks to the help of Vision Australia students experienced the world through the eyes of people with vision impairments.

SENSORY GYM

The school sensory gym is currently under the process of acquiring new and innovative sensory items. The latest purchase is a rowing machine that enhances endurance and builds muscle tone of individuals. Encouraging gross motor control and an alternative provision for active, sensory seeking students. This is in addition to the stationary bikes, kettle bell weights, cardio stations and boxing bag that we have been utilising for several years.

It is very exciting that our sensory gym now also is the home of the Australian made ‘Therapy pod!’ This provides proprioceptive sensory input giving the students a sense of self to feel calm and ready to learn. To accompany this, we have the Therapy Premium Weighted Blanket to provide the ultimate calming experience.  These are just a few of the many new items that have arrived for our Sensory gym.

We are in the process of some very exciting upgrades. This is a work in progress and both staff and students are excited. Stay tuned!

SMART-START BREAKFAST CLUB

Breakfast Club

Our breakfast program is running again this year thanks to the kindness and generosity of our sponsor, the William Ruebensohn Foundation, and the volunteer efforts of our community members.  Breakfast Club aims to help our students to start the day with a good breakfast.

We are open from 8.30am until 8.55am every day at the school canteen. We offer a good variety of breakfast options to students and staff. Our regular menu includes buttered toast, cheese, various jams and spreads, fruit juice, milk, and various cereals. We have a special menu that operates most weeks as well. It consists of pancakes on a Tuesday, sausage muffins or wraps on Wednesday and spinach and feta or bacon and cheese omelettes on Thursday. These are very popular with everyone. We also occasionally have crumpets.

We are strictly nut free and can add gluten free options if required.
