Swimming carnival

On Thursday 13th February, we held our annual swimming carnival after which selected students went on to represent our school at the District Swimming Carnival .  Zig Zag was represented at district by Tenisha Fowler- Bennett, Leo Sirisisavath and Yvette Merlino.  Well done everyone!

It was such a fun day for everyone.  All students' behaviour and willingness to have a go was exemplary.  It makes me so proud to watch our students as a whole school.  We have a great bunch of children who are nurturing and willing to support all their friends.  I couldn't be prouder as a Principal.

As a result of the district Swimming Carnival held at Portland.  Leo will be going to Dubbo this Friday to compete at a Regional level.
Well done Leo and good luck!

Year 6 reports

Halogen National Young Leaders Conference

On Monday our leadership team went to Sydney for the Halogen National Young Leaders Conference. They joined thousands of Year Six children from around the state to listen to captivating speakers and be inspired to lead.

The speakers were Erin Molin, Rove McManus, Bianca Chatfield and John Coutis.

‘If I can, you can!’ This is a quote from John Coutis … he had been through a lot and  he is now is amazing. I found him inspiring.

Leo Sirisisavath - Library Monitor

I liked Rove because he was inspirational as well. He was very funny and has a great back story. I loved the day and wish I could go again.

Jonah Lake - Technology Monitor

I liked Erin because her back story was interesting. She reminded us to never give up on our dreams.

Yvette Merlino - School Captain

I really loved all the speakers because they were inspirational and they really told us how everyone can do what they want, despite rejections.

Rory Duffy - School Captain

I really liked John Coutis because he was funny and inspirational. He got messages through and inspired me to be the "best me" I can be.

Tori Grantham - Vice Captain

My favourite speaker was John Coutis because he was an inspiration and even though he had a disability he was always happy. He believed in himself.

Angel Adams - Vice Captain

My favourite speaker was John Coutis because he was inspirational and he didn’t let anyone bring him down. He was very funny.

From the classroom

The focus for writing in the first half of this term has been on Persuasive Writing.  Here is a sample of a student's work.

Persuasive writting - by Jessica Harding

Zig Zag School Should have class pets.

If we had pets in class we could learn how to look after the pets.  If we learn how to look after pets we will learn to be responsible.

If we had a pet at school we could write about it.  Also if we had a class pet it might cheer some one up, if they were hurt.

We need a class pet at Zig Zag School.

Should we squash spiders?

Spider, spiders....We all know spiders.  They're defensive and hairy, dangerous and ugly... But are they REALLY so bad?  It would make me cry HEART SHATTERING tears if you think they are.  Here is why you shouldn't squish them!

What's worse than a spider?  Those HORRIBLE flies! Flies and mosquito's!  The mosquitos feed on YOU, while the files are vomiting on your food.  Ugh, disgusting!  Think about that juicy fruit, but when you eat it, that yucky vomit taste!  Ugh, disgusting?  Spiders, however - Eat these terrible beast!  They don't even bother us when we don't bother them, but flies do!  Thank you spider, if you weren't here flies and mosquito's would over populate and kill us!  Spiders don't just kill mosquito;s and flies,  there are some more creatures! Stingers, bees, fruit-flies, venomous spiders and more are all destroyed by spiders.

I know some people have arachnophobia, but let me explain why you shouldn't fear  our spider friends.  One, spiders bites are REALLY rare.  Most spiders venom cannot kill a human, only some species that live in deserts and some parts of the city.  Here are some reasons why a spider MAY bite you.  Tripping over, sitting on one, bothering one or trying to kill one. Do these seem THAT hard to avoid?  Not at all!  If a spider is near you, just walk away!  One of the biggest spiders, "tarantula", isn't even venomous!  There is no reason to be afraid!  If you don't bother a spider, it won't bother you.  At the very least, their MINOR issues you can put safely in your yard!

Did you know spiders help our household ecosystem?  Yes, our houses have an ecosystem and yes, spiders help it.  In fact they help your garden row!  Don't you want fresh fruit n' veg without bugs feeding on them?  Spiders help out!  All they ask for is to rest in your house for few days.  In exchange, they keep off bugs and help your garden!  That doesn't sound so horrible, does it?  Trust me, spiders are much more scared of you than you are scared of them!  Absolutely CRUEL and HEART SHATTERING if you decide to squish these innocent spiders.  Would you enjoy being stomped on 5110 times?  I wouldn't.

Now, if you still don't believe me, what if YOU were in that spiders situation?  Think about this scenario:  You're in a house, getting ready for bed after fending off those beast from the owners garden....But suddenly, WHACK! The web you worked so hard for is destroyed. Suddenly, you're under a foot, ready to live your last minute, as the owner laughs.  would you want the owner to kill you, or let you free?  They work so hard for us, and their reward is a foot to the face!  How could we?  You may argue,"They don't actually do this, it's just a story!" But it's not.  Admit, you've once thought about killing a spider.  Don't you feel any guilt for the poor, poor thing?

Spiders may not look like us, but trust me, we are much alike.  Allow me to explain.  They travel hours just o provide food for their family,  much like us.  Their daily mission isn't to hurt us, it's to find food and stay alive.  Even if they look scary, they aren't that bad at all.

In conclusion, we should NOT kill spiders.  Thank you for reading, I htink it's obvious that its MUCH better to not kill spiders.  I hope you now know that we should OBVIOUSLY not kill spiders.

Persuasive writing - By Oliver

Hi BTN,

I would like you to make a story about the Zig Zag Railway.

Zig Zag Railway has been through the most recent bushfires, and a story could show everyone that Zig Zag Railway is ok and the clean up is under way. When the fire came it was loud and a lot of things were burnt.

Some damage was incurred. There were  no carriages burnt but there were sleepers that were damaged. My dad has footage of the fire that went through and if you would use it in your story.

The recovery and clean up is a huge job. There will be a lot of track work and a lot of sleepers to be replaced. There will be an engine running tests in the months to come.

This would not be a story about the fires because you have already done that, but a story about the recovery and clean up of a place lots of people in Australia know about … The Zig Zag Railway.

My Dad says that in about two months the Zig Zag Railway will be running again. He is fixing the AC16 (an engine). If it will be running, I might be on the train with my dad, you could come too!
