Rawlinson Primary School News

No. 20 - 22nd July 2021

PRINCIPAL'S NEWS

Welcome back to Term 3!  The weather has been unrelenting and I’m sure you struggled to get outside during the holidays.  It is great to see students back at school ready and eager to learn.  We have the Faction Carnival and Interschool Athletics this term, so hopefully the weather will allow us to go out and train.

Remember that every day counts to have your child at school and the weather is not a reason to stay at home.  We try to have the children outside as much as we can so they can get exercise and fresh air.

If you have not yet received your child’s report from last term, your child will bring it home on their return to school or you can collect it from the office.

We still have unexplained absences from last semester that require an explanation.  Remember to reply to the SMS when your child is absent and then it is done.

We have an exciting term organised with the Mass Choir performance, School Photos, Year 6 Camp, Year 4/5 RAC excursion and much more.  We look forward to working with you and your child to have a fun-tastic term at Rawlinson Primary School.

Year 4 PEAC Testing

All year 4 students are tested for the Primary Extension and Challenge program, across the state, during Weeks 3 and 4 of this term.  This then enables those students who are selected, the opportunity to work with other like-minded students in our region, to develop their creative and innovative thinking skills, in areas that interest them.

If you do not want your child to be tested, you need to notify me in writing by Friday 30th July.  If for some reason your child misses the test and you would like them tested, there will be catch up testing held at a later date, however, it will be up to you to take your child to the testing facility on the nominated date.  Further information will follow.

Congratulations

I would like to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to all 174 students who received 100% attendance in Term 1 and to the 65 students who came all of Term 2.  These students are giving themselves the best opportunity to reach their full potential academically, socially and emotionally.  It is an outstanding achievement and you should be very, very proud of yourselves.

HEALTH TIPS

Anxiety - How to help your child

All children experience anxious feelings as part of their normal childhood development.  Some anxious feelings include fear, agitation, nervousness, worry and apprehension.  Some children find it harder to get these feelings under control and may experience anxiety more intensely and more often than others.

Anxiety is when the level of fear or worry about something is out of proportion to the level of risk or danger.  Thinking about the situation makes them more worried and tense.

If your child is experiencing anxiety try to:

·         Acknowledge your child’s fear – don’t dismiss or ignore it.

·         Gently encourage them to do things they’re anxious about, but don’t push them to face situations they’re not yet ready to face.

·         Wait until they actually get anxious before you step in to help

·         Praise him for doing something they’re anxious about, rather than criticising them for being afraid.

·         Avoid labelling your child as ‘shy’ or ‘anxious’.

Your child might need some extra support if their anxiety stops them from doing the things they want to do or interferes with their friendships, school work or family life. If you are worried about your child, contact your local Community Health Nurse, School Psychologist or General Practitioner. For more information about anxiety in children go to www.raisingchildren.net.au or www.healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au
