2022 Term 1 Issue 1

From the Principal

Welcome back!

Hello families and friends,

Welcome back to school for 2022 and welcome to SkoolBag!

We have been excited to see everyone back on board this week and catch up on everyone's holiday adventures. We have also welcomed many new students and their families to our community including our new receptions and several students in other classes. We know that you will join us in welcoming them all to our great school.

The year has started differently to how we imagined but as always we have worked together to make sure everyone has a successful transition back to school. We have had to put some strategies in place to cater for the SAHealth and Department for Education directions and guidelines and thank everyone for being supportive of these.

One of the things we decided to do, to create more space for students and staff in the class rooms, was to move one of our primary groups to the hub. Students have transitioned well into this new arrangement, which we hope will only be a short term measure. Unfortunately some of our much anticipated and loved activities have had to be put on hold at this stage, including the primary camp, buddy reading and our creative arts home groups. As restrictions change we will start putting these things back into action. A reminder that year 3-6 students are strongly encouraged to wear masks when inside if possible, we have been supplied some children’s siaed surgical masks which are available to students. We do understand that this is tricky and will take some getting used to.

Please also see the information below from Nicola Spurrier regarding vaccinations for children.

We have now transitioned all whole school communications and information to the Skoolbag app. This will replace our previous system with SchoolStar. You should have received an email with instructions on how to access SkoolBag. Please contact us if you are having any issues connecting.

All classroom and learning information will continue to be distributed by class teachers through SeeSaw.

We are looking forward to another busy and fun year of learning at Felixstow Community School!

Cheers

Skye 😊

Welcome Lucy

This term we welcome Lucy as our Art and P.E. Teacher. Lucy will be working 3 days per week - 2 days of art and 1 day of P.E. Our teachers will incorporate additional fitness activities during their lessons throughout the week.

'Hi I'm Lucy, I am a first year graduate of a Masters of Teaching. I am very excited to be joining the Felixstow team. I completed my undergraduate degree in architecture, which inspired my passion for drawing and the arts and has provided me with skills that I will be able to utilise in teaching the visual arts program this term.

To get to know me a little bit, here are a couple of my favourite things: cats, bike riding, and puzzles. I look forward to getting to know all of you.'

Felixstow Highlights

Primary

News from Primary 2!

All the kids are back woo hoo! We were very excited to be back together. Today we were learning to make predictions about a book although we only had a little bit of information. The book was covered in brown paper and had some nouns, adjectives and verbs to work with. We filled in a think, see, wonder chart to list our ideas and predictions. We made some correct predictions and guessed correctly that it was fantastic Mr Fox!

We are looking forward to learning more about the horrendous farmers Borris, Bunce and Bean. Here are the drawings we created as we listened to the first chapter being read.

Hi from Primary 1!

Student Teacher in P1

'Hi, my name is Dora (DUOWEN ZHU). I am a student from the University of South Australia studying a Bachelor degree of Primary Education. I came from Shanghai, and I have been studying in Adelaide since high school. While studying, I experienced some special events. Firstly, based on the purpose of accumulating social experience, I worked in a Chinese restaurant as a waitress during weekends as a part-time job, it taught me some daily living skills which I didn’t know before. Also, I worked at a café as the coffee maker and as a tutor to help students to complete their homework when I was in China during last year. Since I started to listen to different types of music more often after I arrived in Australia, I found piano songs could let me feel calm and peaceful. Therefore, I took piano lessons after school.

Jenny was the teacher who taught me how to play the piano. She was very patient and kind to me and also encouraged me to practice more challenging piano pieces. Therefore, I gradually came to the idea of being an excellent music teacher like her. The strengths and positive characteristics that I contain include optimism, honesty, respectfulness, and responsibility.  I feel very nervous and also excited about my placement as it is a good opportunity for me to apply learnt knowledge of teaching for actual classes, which allows me to be better prepared for my future teaching. More importantly, I can gain some good suggestions for teaching from my supervising teacher Lauren and observing other teachers’ lessons to learn the teaching strategies that they use as well. Overall, I hope I can perform well during the placement.'

Juniors

Hello from Tuula’s Juniors!

We have had a great start to the year and have been busy settling into school routines and getting to know each other. We have been enjoying our learning through play sessions in Investigation, listening to stories, playing with sounds in English, tai chi, playing games, drawing, counting and sequencing numbers.

We have worked out what makes a ‘happy and safe’ classroom: listening, using kind words, caring, asking, doing jobs, helping each other, having clean hands and working together. This week we are also learning about having a ‘growth mindset’ to help us with our learning. We have learned that we can ‘grow’ our brain by never giving up and learning from mistakes!

Nicole's 1/2s!

For homegroups this term, each class will be participating in the homegroup which their teacher runs. This term our class has been helping Jenny with moving mulch, weeding, and looking after our school grounds. We have been having so much fun!

Resource Hub

Welcome

The Resource Hub staff, would like to extend a warm welcome to our returning and new students along with their families. We hope you all had a restful and happy summer holiday.

Over the holiday period, Resource Hub (RH) staff have been sourcing new furniture with the money raised by last year’s fundraising events, and are awaiting delivery.  This year, we will again be running a Student Monitor program (years 3 to 7) and Nicole’s class (year 2) will also continue with the RH Class Monitor roles. The Resource Hub will be delivering a variety of themed activity days each term, more will be revealed soon.

The Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC)

About the Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premiers Reading Challenge is a literacy engagement program that was introduced by the Premier in 2004. Its aims to encourage children to read more books, to improve literacy skills and to just enjoy reading. The challenge requires the child to read 12 books from the start of the school year until early September. Children who complete the challenge are then awarded a certificate or medal depending on the number of years they have participated. For more information see the attached brochure or go to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website: https://premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au/

PRC at FCS

The Primary class students and Nicole’s class can begin the Challenge from Day 1. Forms can be downloaded from the above link. If you have a problem accessing the form then paper copies are available from school. Tuula’s class will receive their forms in Term2. The final day of the Challenge is Term 3, week 7. Record sheets must be handed in to Kelly or Gillian no later than this date and can be handed in any time before if the student has completed the Challenge. Awards are given to students who have completed the Challenge (once the school has received them) at an assembly in Term 4.

We are looking forward to term 1 and excited to put all our planning and ideas into action and of course supporting all our students to have the best experience using our Resource Hub.

Kind regards

Kelly
