Principal's Report

Today we celebrated the College’s Opening Mass with Monsignor Murphy and Fr McKay. It is a wonderful way to gather as a school community and share our faith in a meaningful way. After meeting with the College Captains last week, it was decided that our theme for this year is: “Be Brave, not Perfect”. What does this mean? Being brave means taking yourself out of your comfort zone, even when you know that you may be challenged and not achieve a perfect outcome. The student that selects the harder subject knowing that they may not obtain a perfect score, will become more capable in that subject than if they had chosen an easier path. The netballer who tries out for A grade rather than C Grade is being brave. The singer who tries out for the choir, knowing they are not the best vocalist, is being brave. It means getting in and having a go without concerning yourself about what others may think of you. This is what we want St Brigid’s students to be – Brave, not perfect.

After mass we also celebrate the wonderful efforts of our 2020 Year 12 students and their hard earned results. Congratulations to our 2020 VCE Dux, Sam Cameron and VCAL Dux, Georgia Pilgrim.

This Wednesday afternoon and evening is our Parent Teacher evening. For those parents who have made appointments, this is a good way to build partnerships with your child’s teachers so that we can work together for the best outcome for your child. For those who were not able to make an appointment, I would ask that you continue to communicate with your child’s teachers via email or in person on a frequent basis.

I am pleased to announce that we have appointed two new Child Safety Officers at St Brigid’s: Mr McDonald and Mrs Rook. If any family members have concerns about the safety of any student at St Brigid’s, I encourage you to contact the school to discuss. Also, this week I received notice from Ms Farnham that she has decided to leave the College at the end of the term to pursue interests elsewhere. On behalf of the College community, I would like to wish Ms Farnham the best for her future.

Last Wednesday evening the Parent Response Group met to discuss matters, including a review of the current uniform. This is an advisory body, chaired by Mrs Jo Martin, that encourages parental input into the decision making process.

On Friday, the Victorian Premier announced a return to the Summer COVID normal conditions. Which means that students are no longer required to wear a mask indoors if they can maintain social distancing, however all people over the age of 12 must still carry a mask on them at all times.

Kind Regards,

Gerard Raven

Darwin Defenders

On Friday 18the February, Mia McGrath and Dylan Avery represented St Brigid’s College and attended what would have normally been the Darwin Defenders Commemoration Service. The Darwin Defenders gather each year to commemorate the anniversary of the attack and the brave men and women that fought to defend the city. 2021 was the 79th anniversary of the bombings. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions the commemorative service was unable to take place, but that didn’t stop us paying our respects. Mia and Dylan laid a wreath at the Darwin Defenders Memorial and paid their respects on behalf of the students, staff and families of St Brigid's College.

Teacher Advisor Schedule

All our students are assigned to a vertical homeroom consisting of students from Years 7 – 12.  Home room groups stay together for their entire school life at St Brigid’s, encouraging leadership, community and familiarity and giving students a real opportunity to know each other and their advisor.  Lifelong friendships are formed where there may not otherwise be the opportunity.

The Teacher Advisor (TA) program is part of the daily life of students. Homerooms meet for 10 minutes each morning, and approximately every six weeks each student meets individually with their Teacher Advisor to discuss and monitor their academic and pastoral progress. A report over viewing the student’s academic achievement and future goals for improvement is formulated from this interview and made available to parents via our online Parent Access Module (PAM).  This regular contact builds trust and strong relationships between students, teachers and families.   It ensures that families and teachers know each student’s strengths and needs and that secure relationships are formed that guide the students along their learning journey.

Our TA Schedule for Term 1 can be found below.

Book

PHOSPHORESCENCE

Author: Julia Baird

A beautiful, intimate and inspiring investigation into how we can find and nurture within ourselves that essential quality of internal happiness - the 'light within' that Julia Baird calls 'phosphorescence' - which will sustain us even through the darkest times.

Over the last decade, we have become better at knowing what brings us contentment, well-being and joy. We know, for example, that there are a few core truths to science of happiness. We know that being kind and altruistic makes us happy, that turning off devices, talking to people, forging relationships, living with meaning and delving into the concerns of others offer our best chance at achieving happiness. But how do we retain happiness? It often slips out of our hands as quickly as we find it. So, when we are exposed to, or learn, good things, how do we continue to burn with them? And more than that, when our world goes dark, when we're overwhelmed by illness or heartbreak, loss or pain, how do we survive, stay alive or even bloom? In the muck and grit of a daily existence full of disappointments and a disturbing lack of control over many of the things that matter most - finite relationships, fragile health, fraying economies, a planet in peril - how do we find, nurture and carry our own inner, living light - a light to ward off the darkness?
