Principals Column

Welcome all families to Week 3

Luckily all staff and students are accessing and delivering learning activities on our beautiful school site as we continue to operate under Level 2 Covid restrictions. Thanks to all parents and carers who are maintaining physical distance at the school gates and waiting in cars where appropriate to pick up and drop off their students.

Coming up in two weeks will be an opportunity for parents and carers to engage with teachers about student progress, success and learning needs through phone interviews timetabled for every student. This valued and purposeful communication strengthens student outcomes and empowers, parents and carers to engage with their children as learners and support their schooling. Please book in your most suitable time on the upcoming booking sheet.

Goodluck to all participants in this Fridays upcoming District Athletics Carnival at Nambucca Heads. Please return all notes, even if not attending.

Congratulations to Lyndsey Caldecott for achieving her Highly Accomplished Teacher Accreditation. Lyndsey has been working towards this certification for the last 18 months. It involved an extensive portfolio of evidence that highlighted her expertise and knowledge of teaching. She has undergone rigorous observations, referee statements and her evidence was reviewed by a panel from the NSW Department of Education and the NSW Education and Standards Authority.

A note from our Director of Education Leadership, Sue Brown to Lyndsey:

"I extend my sincere congratulations to you on this significant achievement in your career and acknowledge the considerable effort required to achieve this level of professional accreditation. Your accreditation recognises your outstanding teaching and commitment to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning for your students and peers, as well as among the profession more broadly. It acknowledges your effective communication with the community to support the development of the school and promote student learning. I would like to take this opportunity to again congratulate you on your valuable contribution to the learning of your school community and more generally to public education in New South Wales".

Well done on achieving this outstanding milestone in your career, it will benefit all our students at Scotts Head Public School.

COVID-19 and Our School

Below is information that has been taken directly from the Department of Education’s website and applies to our school. We have listed the main points that families need to know, this information was updated on 9 July 2021. The link to this information is: https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families/schools-outside-of-greater-sydney1

All students are expected to be at school unless they have even the mildest of COVID-19 symptoms.

Under the current health orders, there is nothing to restrict students and staff who must attend school from moving between two areas with different levels of restrictions. Students and staff should reduce traveling to geographical areas with higher levels of COVID-19 restrictions in place.

A reminder for all families

Students should not attend school if unwell, even with mild symptoms of COVID-19. Any person with any COVID-19 symptoms should be sent home and should not return until they have received a negative test result and are symptom-free. In circumstances where children have other medical reasons for recurrent symptoms a letter from their GP is sufficient to negate the requirement for a negative test.

Anyone who is unwell with COVID-19 symptoms is strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received. Find your local testing clinics.

Visitors

Non-essential visitors are not permitted in schools. Some visitors are permitted in schools based on the guidelines that follow.

Parents and carers must follow their school’s advice regarding changes to drop off and pick up including staying in the car when dropping off and picking up children if safe to do so.

Parents should:

  • maintain physical distancing by avoiding gathering outside of school gates
  • remain outside of school grounds (note some exceptions may apply regarding schools for specific purposes, vulnerable students or students with disability)
  • follow mask-wearing requirements and sign in using the Service NSW QR code when entering the school.

QR code sign-in process for all staff and visitors

The NSW Government have introduced mandatory QR codes across a range of additional settings, including schools.

Parents and carers permitted on school sites for specific purposes are required to check in using the QR codes available and check out once they leave the school site.

Spotlight on Year 1/2

Focus on Learning

The 1/2 class have had a wonderful start to term 3, with everyone coming back from holidays excited to learn and grow.

Friday Fun Day!

Last week we kick started our Friday fun day with Crab Soccer! It was a sensational way to start the day, with the class separating into two teams and facing off against each other to battle it out in a grueling and competitive game. It was a close game, and even Pak Tim had to take to the arena.

ELLA

Every Tuesday, our class spends the afternoon session consolidating our Indonesian knowledge through a program called ELLA, which is delivered with iPads. All students love their ELLA time, and are focused on listening to the Indonesian being spoken to them, and applying their understanding to complete set activities.

Numeracy  - Number Talks

The 1/2 class are Competitive bunch tablets and healthy competition! During our numeracy sessions, we have been completing timed numbered tools where two or three-digit numbers is selected and students need to present as much information as they can about the number within a timeframe. So far, our record is 8 different ways to present the number of the day! We had number lines, tens frames, tally marks, number sentences, hundreds/tens/ones charts and more!  Most of all, the students love to write on the big whiteboard and share the learning with their peers.

Geography

In geography, we are exploring places within Australia and Australia’s location in the world. We are learning to describe connections people have with places, both locally and globally. So far, we have been having lots of fun learning where the states and territories of Australia are by completing puzzles and putting maps together.
