Term 2 | Week 8 | 8 June 2021

Principals Column

Welcome all families to Week 8.

Regular attendance at school is essential to assist students to maximise their potential.

Our school values the ongoing and vital partnership with parents and carers, this connection is powerful and can a have significant impact on the way students view school. A positive relationship between home and school fosters connection and feelings of belonging that are essential for our students wellbeing.

I want to share the clear message that at Scotts Head Public School we have the expectation that students come to school regularly, 95% or above of the time, as learning is sequential and every day counts (in my biased opinion at the best school in the world). Together these positive partnerships will ultimately enhance student outcomes not only in primary school but into high school and beyond, correlating in our kids positive life outcomes. Our students are so lucky to be attending such a beautiful, positive, caring, unique learning environment where every student is genuinely known valued and cared for where there is enthusiastic support.

While promoting this positive attendance message I realise that kids get sick and family circumstances sometimes require students to be away from school. These things are unavoidable and understandable. There are simple easy steps parents and carers may take to explain an absence:

  • Email the school
  • Telephone the school
  • Send a message on Class Dojo to the classroom teacher
  • Use Skoolbag to send an absentee form

We have a legal obligation to have all absences and lateness of students explained and justified. This is ultimately to keep students safe, both physically and educationally. Working together and using these simple processes will stop unexplained absence letters being generated for families and be proactive in supporting students continued cognitive, emotional, social and physical progress.

Please notify the school by any of the above means to let us know that your little person is or will be away. Developing this strong communication and shared responsibility of productive relationships will ultimately support our students learning.

We are looking forward to inviting parents back to our school athletics carnival next Friday to watch and help out with our students competing (we are always looking for time keepers). The P&C will be running a canteen on the day, the menu will be handed out next week. All students can come straight down to the oval and leave from the oval on the day, there will be no one at school. Students from Flinders house are able to wear blue clothes and Oxley house are able to wear green clothes.

The school fence is now complete. The temporary fencing has been removed and the new intercom system should be installed by the end of next week. We are pleased with how the fence looks visually and structurally how it will increase the positive profile and safety of our school.

What's Happening in Indonesian Classes?

After all the fun and excitement of the Indonesian Festival it was straight back to work with lots of learning happening in Indonesian classes from K-6. Pak Karl has been working on a History unit with Year 6s, Bu Nik has been teaching Time to K & 1/2s and Bu Emi has been immersed in iMovie with 3/4 and 4/5. Working in small groups to plan and produce a short Road Safety film has been a great learning opportunity for Stage 2 students. Not only have they had to work co-operatively to rehearse and translate their lines in Indonesian, they have also learnt how to use a storyboard, try different camera angles, edit a film and add bi-lingual subtitles. There were plenty of bloopers but some of the films are looking very promising – the best will be shared with our sister schools in Indonesia.

It’s great to see how diverse the Indonesian program is across the school, incorporating various key learning areas from the curriculum and broadening students’ skills in numeracy, literacy and technology, all while immersing students in authentic language and culture experiences. We are also very grateful for Pak Mur’s support in assisting with native-speaker language tips as well as sharing his passion for dance and music. Pak Mur and his family will be away on tour for the next two months, so we wish them well: “Selamat jalan!”

Here are a few sneak peaks at the Road Safety videos currently being made by Stage 2 students. Stay tuned, the final videos will be shared online soon!

COVID-19 and our School

With the cold and flu season upon us, we would like to remind parents and carers that in accordance with advice from NSW Health, students should not attend school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms.

Please advise the school of your child’s absence on the first day they are away from school and advise of any symptoms they may be experiencing. You can do this by phone, email or via the Skoolbag app.

Students who are unwell with flu-like symptoms are strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until they receive a negative result.

Please provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result and be symptom-free before being permitted to return to school. You can simply email a screenshot of the text message you receive to the school: scottshead-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind all visitors to the school, that they must sign the school sign-in sheet where they acknowledge that they will comply with the COVID-19 requirements for visitors, contractors and service providers each time they visit. Visitors must also check in using the Service NSW QR code.
