Issue 16: Wednesday, 15th September 2021

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Unbelievably we are half way through Week 9 and have only 7 school days until the holidays.  This term has been extremely busy and my sincere thanks go to all parents and carers for their cooperation during this time.

This fortnight I would like to remind all of our families about how to communicate with us when problems arise.  The following are our recommended steps when dealing with school based issues:

1.     Try to identify the problem clearly before going to the school. If there is more than one problem, list them to ensure that the extent of the problem is clear to the school.

2.     Decide whether the problem is a concern, a query, request or a complaint. This will help in finding a solution.

 3.     Make an appointment to talk with the teacher. This can be arranged through our school office.

 4.     Try to stay calm. Even if you don't feel it, being calm will help to get your concerns across more clearly than if you are upset or angry.

 5.     If the issue involves an incident involving another parent’s child, do not approach the child or parent.  Raise the issue with the school first.

 6.     Raise the issue with myself or a member of the Leadership Group, if you feel the issue has not been resolved or addressed through initial contact with the relevant teacher.

 OPEN NIGHT

Open Night was a terrific success and we thank everyone who came along and shared the opportunity with their children.  Our data collected showed that we had on average 74% of families attend on the night.  We are conducting a survey to review this event and look forward to your feedback.

 HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Due to the COVID-19 Phase 4 guidelines we will be splitting the athletics carnival into different mini events.  These include:

•           Fri, 17 September 8.50am – 10.00am     K-PP carnival

•           Fri, 17 September 10.30am – 2.15pm     Year 1-6 carnival

We welcome all families to come and support their children at the planned times across the next couple of days.

 MENS SHED EVENT

Our next Men’s Shed event is scheduled for this afternoon, commencing at 4.30pm.  There are a number of activities organised and the event will be open to boys and girls and their fathers or primary male caregiver.  My sincere thanks go to our male staff members who are coordinating this activity.

 CLASS PLANNING FOR 2022

Now is the time when we begin planning for next year.   In the next few weeks we will begin arranging classes for 2022.   The process we use includes:

 1.     A draft class structure is created based on student enrolments (predicted).

2.     Staff meet to discuss and allocate students to classes, consideration is given to:

·         Student academic needs.

·         Student behavioral needs.

·         Student social needs.

·         Gender balance.

·         Previous placement in a composite class.

·         Parent feedback.

3.     Leadership Group review classes and meet with staff to clarify, modify, confirm classes.

4.     Staff meet to discuss final placements (this may involve multiple meetings).

5.     Classes are published for parents and students.

If there are any matters that you would like us to consider that are based on educational grounds, we ask that you submit them to me in writing by completing the appropriate form that is available from our reception.  All requests must be received by Friday, 15 October.

Please note that requests for particular teachers will not be considered under any circumstances.

I would like to assure all families that we go to great lengths to structure classes to meet the needs of all of our students.

Have a great fortnight and a wonderful semester break with your loved ones!!

FROM THE DEPUTIES DESK

HOUSE CARNIVAL

The House Carnival is a normal school day and students are expected to be at school from 8:35am – 2:35pm.

All students will begin the day in their classroom. Kindy and PP will have their House Carnival in the morning and will return to their LAs before lunch. Year 1-6 students will be in class until 10:15am before marching to the oval for their events.

Kindy students who do not usually attend on a Friday may participate in the House Carnival as long as they are accompanied by an adult and leave when the Friday kindy groups return to class.

Year 1-6 students will eat their lunch on the oval and may sit with their families during this time.

Students may wish to spray their hair with coloured spray but this must be done at home. Please do not bring hairspray to school.

 FOOD OPTIONS

 Canteen

 Canteen Open 8:00am - 1:30pm

Normal Friday menu for students.

Variety of savoury and sweet options available for spectators and students on the day while stocks last.

2022 Year Camp Fundraising Sausage Sizzle

Sausage sizzles can be pre-ordered online with the QR code or return the envelope provided with cash to your child’s LA teacher. If you have not received an envelope please talk to your child’s LA teacher or the front office.

Sausage Sizzle pre-orders close at lunchtime on Thursday.

Sausage sizzles will be available for sale from the BBQ on the oval. Soft drink will be available for adults – not children.

K&PP canteen and sausage sizzle orders will be delivered to their LA.

Year 1-6 students will eat on the oval. Orders will be distributed by teachers in House bays.

Please insert QR code from order form

 ONLINE PAYMENTS

We are currently transitioning to a new website. Unfortunately we are having problems with online credit card payments. Until further notice, please pay for swimming and excursions using either the Qkr app or by returning the envelope with cash or credit card details to your child's LA teacher.

The Qkr app can be downloaded free from the App Store or Google Play and allows you to pay and give consent in one place.

 FINANCIAL SUPPORT

A reminder that if your child participating in an excursion or event may cause you hardship, every excursion over $10 has an application for financial support at the bottom of the consent form. Fill in this form, being mindful of the closing date, and return it in an envelope to the front office. All applications for financial support are confidential.

 OPEN NIGHT

It was great to see so many of our families at Open Night – about 74% of our students had one or more family member visit their LA and many of those completed the Open Night Survey which will be used for future planning.

We appreciate the support of Sweets on the Run and KM Coffee who made a donation to the school following this successful event.

The 2022 Year 6 families had their first fundraiser and did an amazing job, working as a Bertram FRREE team to cook and serve 442 sausage sizzles and raise $1327 to help make next year’s camp affordable for every student.

 WA’s BIGGEST BREAKFAST

Would you like to help provide breakfast for those who are struggling to have a regular healthy breakfast?

We will be collecting donations at Pancake Wednesday during Weeks 9 & 10. Watch your coin go into the spinner knowing it will help Foodbank support families in need.

 UNEXPLAINED ABSENCES

With only 9 days of Term 3 remaining we will be sending messages and Unexplained Absence notes for students who have been absent without reason in Terms 1, 2 and 3. If you are asked for a reason for an absence, even if you are sure you have provided this previously, please respond so we can get these resolved before the end of term.

 With best wishes

Jane Weir, Cathy Stott, Sofia Delios

GILMORE COLLEGE PRINCIPALS TOUR - Thursday, 16th September 2021

We warmly invite families of current and prospective students to visit our school for a Tour of the facilities and gain an understanding of the opportunities available for our students.

The 45 minute Tour will commence at 9:00am from the Administration Office at the front of the school. Morning tea and a Question & Answer session will follow the Tour in the conference room. We will answer your questions honestly; explaining our ethos and our passions.

College Tours provide prospective and current families the opportunity to visit the school during a normal day, visiting the places where learning and engagement take place and to provide a true sense of Gilmore College. The student leaders in particular are a great source of authentic information about what it means to be a Gilmore College student day to day.

Please note, this is a ‘parents only’ tour. (Students who enrol at Gilmore College will visit the school for their orientation later in the year).
