Issue 10: Wednesday, 16th June 2021

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Welcome to Week 9 of this term.  As we move towards the conclusion of what has been a very busy term I would again like to thank all families for their assistance and support of our school activities and events.  Schools cannot work in isolation and the level of community connection in our school continues to grow.

WELCOME NEW SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS

Last Monday our School Board met for our Term 2 meeting.  I would like to take the opportunity to welcome our new parent members who include Lauren Harry, Claire Gibaud and Jessica Dalton.  Shaun Spice also returns to the Board as a staff member for a new tenure period.  I am also very pleased to announce that Daniel De Stasio is our new School Board Chairperson.

The Board of a public school works with the school community to achieve the best outcomes for students.  It plays an important role in contributing to good school governance so that school resources are used efficiently and community expectations and the school’s priorities reflect the needs of students.

The functions of Boards are covered by legislation and include both approval and advisory roles.  Some of the matters Boards may make decisions on include fees and charges, book lists, sponsorship and dress codes.  School Boards make these decisions with the principal who ensures the decisions adhere to legislative and policy requirements. Principals also seek the advice of the School Boards so as to understand local community views.

SEMESTER 1 REPORTS

Our Semester 1 student reports will be going home at the end of Week 10.  These will be regular reports that document student progress during the semester.  Our teachers have invested hours in writing these reports and we suggest that parents take the time to carefully read them and discuss them with your child/children.

HOUSE CROSS-COUNTRY CARNIVAL

A reminder that our Year 1-6 House Cross-Country Carnival will be held on Friday, weather permitting.  We encourage all families to support their children with this event with further updates are being forwarded across our social media channels in the coming days.

Have a wonderful fortnight.

FROM THE DEPUTIES DESK

Semester 1 Reports

Students’ Semester 1 Reports will be emailed to parents and uploaded to Connect on Friday Week 10 (June 25th). If you have changed your email address or if a parent or carer needs to be added to our report distribution list, please let the front office know. A reminder that the link you are emailed to access your child’s report is only live for 4 weeks. We suggest you either print their report or save it to your computer as a pdf. Reports in Connect can be accessed as long as your child is attending a Department of Education school.

Some students’ reports will indicate a request for interview. If your child’s teacher would like to meet with you, please contact them through Seesaw to arrange a mutually convenient time for a face to face or phone interview. It is preferable to have this interview during Week 11 so you can set goals with your child for Semester 2 during the holidays.

FLOOD SAFETY

Australia has a history of floods, causing devastating human and economic impact.

Floods are a natural process influenced largely by the weather and driven by the amount of rainfall and length of time it falls. After heavy rainfall, rivers, creeks and catchments may overflow this type of flooding is most common in Australia and is known as riverine flooding.

Western Australia (WA) is the largest state in Australia with a vast range of climatic conditions and seasonal changes that influence and increase the potential for flooding.

If you live in a flood prone region, then you need to prepare for the possibility of a flood endangering you, your family and impacting your property, even isolating you from the community and essential services.

Most household insurances policies do not provide flood cover so you also need to be prepared emotionally and financially. Start to weigh up the possibility of flooding where you live and prepare your family and home to minimise the risk and ensure their safety.

PARENTING TIPS

Building a Relationship with your School.

Benefits of a strong parent-school relationship

As a parent, you know your child better than anyone else does. Your child’s teachers will want to get to know them too.

When you have a strong and respectful relationship with your child’s school and teachers, you’re in a good position to give them the information they need to help your child get the most out of their education. You and your child’s teachers can work together to support your child’s learning and wellbeing.  When everybody is working together in the best interests of your child, they are likely to reap academic and social benefits, like:

·         regular school attendance

·         positive school results

·         a positive attitude towards school

·         positive social and relationship skills

·         a sense of wellbeing

·         school completion

How to build a strong parent-school relationship

You can build a parent-school relationship in several ways:

·         Be involved in the school community in whatever ways you can.

·         Talk informally with teachers at school drop-off and pick-up times or by email or phone if this is more appropriate for you and the teacher.

·         Go to parent-teacher interviews and parent meetings.

·         Check the school website, noticeboard and emails regularly.

·         As well as everyday contact, you might also be able to learn more about the school through its annual report, school performances and social events – for example, barbecues, cultural or music events and school fairs. Schools might also hold parent seminars on topics like behaviour management, bullying and mental health.

Establishing a relationship with your child’s school is a two-way process. For example, you can ask the school and teachers for information or feedback. You can also share your child’s special events or achievements outside school.  Not all parents can be involved in school as much as they’d like, but you can still let your child know that school is important to your family. Talking about school with your child, being warm and friendly at school events, and being positive about the school and its staff sends the message that you value education and are interested in what’s happening for your child at school.
