I extend to our entire community a very warm welcome and return to Delany College. In particular I welcome all those who are new to our community - the year 7 students and families, and the many other students and families who have joined us this year. I trust you will experience a welcoming and vibrant College community, and I encourage and invite students and families to get involved in the various activities that are run at Delany.
The Delany community
This year the College is moving toward a house-based system of pastoral care and engagement. There are, however, COVID-19 restrictions which have restricted our ability to implement this as a year 7 to 12 model. As a compromise for this year there will be house mentor groups for years 7 & 8, years 9 & 10, while years 11 and 12 remain in their cohorts.
What does all this mean? Each morning (with the exception of Mondays) students begin the first 10 minutes of the day in a mentor class. This is a time when the daily roll is checked for attendance, and provides students with the key contact of a “mentor” teacher.. The Campion house, for example, will have one mentor class that has both years 7 & 8 students, and one mentor class for both years 9 & 10. The same applies for the remaining three houses.
Here are the house coordinator details:
Campion house (white) Miss Guillaume
Chisholm house (blue) Miss Ortiz
MacKillop house (red) Miss Mutabdzija
Tierney house (green) Miss Whitfield
The academic community
Learning has already commenced from Day One.
Year 12 students simply pick up from where they left at the end of last year. Students begin their second term of the HSC course, and they have resumed their work and assessments. If your child is now preparing for the 2021 HSC I suggest you keep talking with him or her, encouraging, gently pushing and celebrating the achievements and experiences of this exciting (but at times overwhelming) year.
Students in years 8 to 11 are familiar with our expectations, and our new year 7 students (and other new students) will quickly learn how things work here at Delany. I encourage you to ask your child what they learned during the day, what was the best or funniest experience, who’s in their friendship group, and how you can support them in their learning.
Thank you
As I have already written, our students have made an excellent start. I acknowledge that this is a result of your work and support of your children - the haircuts, shopping for clothes, books, pens and pencils, lunchboxes… the list goes on. Education works best when families and schools work together.
I’ll take this opportunity to remind you of the process when your child is unwell. If they are unable to attend school please send us an email, or phone and speak to our office staff to leave a message. You can ring at any time of the morning and leave a recorded message. Most importantly, maximise the number of days your child attends school. In my experience, when a child is feeling only 80% OK, the best medication for a speedy recovery is having friends around them.
I look forward to seeing you at our various functions during the year.
St Patrick, pray for us.
