Principal's Message

Dear Community

We have had another busy week here at Scarborough Primary School with students engaging in activities around Harmony Week, Say No to Bullying Day and National Ride to School Day. We also have a lot to look forward to in the next few weeks with an upcoming swimming carnival, a drumming incursion and 3 Way Conferences.

Being such a busy environment means that there are always a multitude of consent forms and permission slips to keep an eye out for. I have listed below the things that have either been sent home in the last week or will be shortly as a reminder of what to keep an eye out for:

  • Taiko Drumming incursion note for PP- 6 students by Monday 22 March (day of incursion)
  • Consent forms for online third party services (went home Tuesday 16 March)
  • Swimming Carnival (26 March) permission slip for Year 3-6 students which has come home today.
  • 3 Way Conference online booking for PP-6 students. Information for bookings was posted on Skoolbag on Thursday and in this newsletter.

Before and After School

As we head towards the end of term, I’d just like to remind students and parents of some of our before and after school procedures.

  • Classroom doors are opened for students at 8:35. Before 8:35, school staff are busy preparing for the day and engaging in meetings so there is no supervision for students prior to this time.
  • Any students on school site without parents should wait at the colourful tables near the undercover area where they will be supervised from around 8:20.
  • There should be no parents or students on site before 8:20 without an appointment.
  • After school, all parents and students should have left the school site by 3:20. We are once again having problems with students remaining on site unsupervised, some becoming involved in inappropriate and unsafe activities, as well as altercations with Mulberry Tree, who have licence to the school grounds after school. Deanmore Square is our closest public facility for after school catch-ups
  • For safety reasons, scooters, bikes and skateboards should not be ridden on school site. Students should dismount once they enter school grounds and walk their wheels to their parking spots.

Engaging in the above processes helps to keep our school a safe and positive environment for all of our students, so we thank you in advance.

School Board

Last week the Scarborough Primary School Board met for their first meeting of 2021. It was great to have a parent come along and sit in on the meeting to find out a little more about our school. Their feedback was that it was a great way to find out about some of the school’s focuses as well as some of the achievements that are being made. All of our meetings are open to the public and we encourage anyone interested to come along.

The meeting was a positive and productive one:

  • The school’s Good Standing Policy was endorsed and is available to read on the website at the following link: http://scarboroughps.wa.edu.au/our-school-2/policies/ Good Standing procedures are a mandatory requirement for all public schools. Good Standing provides a system that assists in ensuring that our students maintain a satisfactory level of behaviour and participation. They are developed to reflect individual school contexts to encourage positive student behaviour, reiterate the need to take personal responsibility for our actions and to support children to reach their educational potential.
  • A cyclical review of the Healthy Food and Drink Policy was started. An updated document will now be drafted in response to feedback from both staff and the Board and presented at the next Board Meeting for further feedback or endorsement.
  • We also looked at some of the school’s Reading and Maths data from 2020. It was very pleasing to note that of our cohort of students who have had the benefit of our strategically implemented, best practice literacy programs from Kindy to Year 2, a massive 89% are progressing at a rate higher than the national average in Reading.

I am also delighted to introduce our newest parent representative, Carrie McIntosh. She will be joining us for our next meeting which is scheduled for Wednesday 28 April at 6pm. Welcome, Carrie!

As always, if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to call or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au

Three Way Conference

As we come towards the end of our first term, we are inviting parents to come and be part of a three-way conference with their child and teacher. The purpose of these conferences is to give your child the opportunity to share their strengths and successes from the term and goals for learning moving forward. There will be a chance to discuss how you can support from home in achieving these goals.

Use the link below to book in a time to meet with your child and teacher. If you are unable to make the times available, please contact your class teacher directly to arrange an alternative time.

Years 3-6 Swimming Carnival

Coming home with your child today will be a consent form for the Years 3-6 Swimming Carnival. This will be held on Friday 26 March.

The students will depart from Scarborough Primary at 11.30am and return to school at 2.50pm.

Please note that we warmly welcome parents to come along and support their child and their house; a spectator fee applies at the pool. Any parents willing to assist with the event should contact Aaron Bacci via email: aaron.bacci@education.wa.edu.au. Volunteers will not need to pay a spectator fee.

Running Club

Interested in joining the Scarborough Primary School running club? Invites are now open for students in Year 1 to Year 6 with younger students being able to attend with parent supervision. It is the perfect opportunity to participate in different activities and to have some fun whilst being fit and active. The sessions will be held at Deanmore Square on Friday mornings from 8:10am to 8:40am and will be run by Mr. Bacci. A sign-up sheet will be available at school for students who are interested.

After School Little Athletics Coaching

I am pleased to announce that after school Little Athletics coaching sessions will be returning this term on Wednesday afternoons. There will be a total of 4 sessions running on the 10, 17, 24 and 31 March from 3:20pm-4:20pm.

They are a great introductory course for the sports and skills in athletic competition so if you haven't done it before, it is the perfect opportunity to give it a go. Permission slips will be available to collect at the front office.
