Dudley Public School Newsletter

Term 1 Weeks 8 and 9

Principal’s Message

Today is International Day of Happiness and students and staff have been thinking about how our school is and can be a happy place. The international theme was to focus on what unites us rather than divides us. Everyone deserves to live a life that makes them happy. There has definitely been lots of smiles at Dudley Public School today. If you get a chance ask your child to tell you Mr Sargent's International Day of Happiness joke!

National Day of Action Against Bullying

Last Friday was the National Day of Action against Bullying. As a school we have an Anti-bullying Plan which is available on our website. Students have explicit lessons throughout the year aimed at identifying bullying behaviour and learning and practising strategies when they experience bullying or see others experiencing bullying. Students often access webinars that are hosted by the Office of eSafety focusing on staying safe in online environments. There are great resources for parents on both the Bullying No Way! website and the Office of eSafety website.

Last year our Tell Them From Me survey data indicated that 92% of students have friends at school they can trust and who encourage them to make positive choices, 81% of students report a positive sense of belonging. Both of these results are above the NSW Government School norm. Our students also report higher than average results in the areas of advocacy (having someone at school who consistently provides encouragement and advice) and positive relationships with teachers. We are also well below the NSW average for students who report being subject to moderate bullying. While these results are encouraging we will continue to work until 100% of our students are reporting positive relationships with peers and teachers and no students report they are being bullied. As a staff, we work very hard to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for.

Wow! What a start to the term we have had for all things sport, my absolute favourite subject! I love seeing all the phenomenal sportspeople who pass through our school and not only show fantastic skills in their chosen sport, but also watching the sportsmanship our Dudley students display each and every time they represent our school.

School Swimming carnival

We saw outstanding swimmers who swam their hearts out.

We saw amazing sportsmanship – not just for students own houses but for everyone!

We saw the sun shining, happy faces and great attitudes.

Congratulations to Jacob Ryan who received a special award. The showing resilience and determination and proving that you don’t have to be the best to have a go and do it all with a smile on his face! Well done Jacob.

Special mention to the teachers for your extra efforts to make this day so successful and to the parents who took time out from their day to assist with time keeping. Thank you all so much. An extra special mention to Christa Spruce who filled the extremely big shoes of Andy Wright as the Chief Time Keeper and did an amazing job. And on her birthday and all!

Well done to Isabelle Spruce who broke every record in every event she entered!

Well done to Issy Spruce who made it State for Backstroke and Breaststroke, which will be held at the end of the term.

PSSA Zone Trials

Many different students in stage 3 have participated in zone trials for different sports. These are students who have been identified to be elite in their chosen field. We have seen trials for tennis, netball, rugby league and basketball. We have had some absolutely outstanding results and the following will progress to the regional trials for their sport.

Basketball – Issy Spruce

Rugby League under 11’s – Toby Hendrickse and Zach Nugus

Rugby League under 12’s – Toby Winter, Fletcher O’Doherty and Louis Jac Skinner

Netball – Xanthe Calove, Ava Campbell, Luka Doyle and Issy Spruce

Congratulations for getting this fair and good luck at the regional selections.

There is so much more to come in all things sport – stay tuned for the next edition!

3/4 KNIGHTS KNOCKOUT

Yesterday Dudley Public School competed in the 3/4 Knights Knockout competition held at Cessnock. We competed really well and managed to finish our day with a win. We would like to thank Danny Nugus for giving up his time to coach us, the parent helpers who assisted with team transportation and Mr Kiely for organising and managing the school team.

National Ride2School Day

This Friday is National Ride2School Day and students in Years 3-6 are excited about riding their bikes to school. Make sure you remind them about bike safety if they do not ride regularly to school. Please check that the bikes are in working condition (tires pumped, brakes work) and that your child wears a helmet.

Kinder students are to park their bikes outside the 5/6H classroom (last years KJ classroom). Year 1-2 students are to park their bikes at the Fairleigh Hall in the back of the Cola perpendicular to the fence.

YEARS 3/4 are to park their bikes under the cola area of the Fairleigh hall perpendicular to the fence. If your child has a really expensive bike then he/she might want to bring a lock.

YEARS 5/6 are to park their bikes around the quadrangle perpendicular to the wall. If your child has a really expensive bike then he/she might want to bring a lock.

Year 3-6 students will have bike tabloid activities in the afternoon for sport. Please make sure your child has a helmet even if they don’t have a bike. Nobody will be forced to participate in the activities. If they are not confident riding then they can walk their bike through some of the activities. If they don’t have a bike then there are always students willing to share their bike in the afternoon.

Studies have shown that children who ride to school arrive alert and ready for a day of learning. Routine exercise also sets children up for an active and healthy lifestyle as adults.
