 This Sunday we celebrate Father’s Day. We all have memories of our own fathers and it gives us an opportunity to reflect on how important fathers are to our growth and development. Fathers are special and we celebrate their uniqueness. A father is a father, not because of himself, but because of the special relationship he has with some very important people- his children.

 Dear Father God,

We thank you for the gift of our fathers that have nurtured us, rejoiced in our achievements and provided us with unconditional love.

We remember fathers who are single parents and those that have adopted children because through their care they have provided loving family homes for their children.

We remember our Fathers who are no longer with us and thank you that our memories of them are our lifelong treasures.

We ask you Father God, to bless our fathers and give them the strength, happiness and wisdom to continue this selfless role.

 We especially thank the P and F Father’s Day committee who sourced, purchased and coordinated the Father’s Day stalls as well as their many parent volunteers.

 Welcome back

We are all looking forward to welcoming back Mrs Baird on Monday. We express our thanks and gratitude to Mrs Brewer and Mrs Ciantar who did a fantastic job in their acting positions during Mrs Baird’s leave.

 Congratulations

We congratulate Mrs Iafigliola on the significant appointment as Acting Religious Education Coordinator beginning Monday 2nd September until the end of Term 3, while Mrs Whiticker takes leave.

Artist in Residence

At St Andrew’s we are very fortunate to be have been offered by the Catholic Education Office an Artist in Residence- Margaret Lopez. Margaret will be working with children and staff every Tuesday until the end of the year- beginning next Tuesday. Currently we are in a think tank mode with many environmental canvases to consider, so we will keep you updated once projects begin. We warmly welcome Margaret to our community.

On the 14th August 2019, Makoi and Natalie from Year 6 represented St Andrews Primary in the annual school cluster, Voice of Youth Competition. The competition was held in our school hall and was attended by three other schools in the Glendenning Cluster. The other entrants spoke well as did our girls who delivered very informative, enthusiastic, persuasive and engaging speeches. 

Makoi was awarded the Social Justice Award for her speech title, “Having Confidence in Yourself” and Natalie spoke about, “The Importance of Education for all Children”. 

Well done girls! We are so very proud of you both.

Canberra 2019: In week 2, Year Six went on a very exciting excursion to Canberra. We had to wake up really early to get ready for the four hour bus trip. After a long drive, our first stop was Parliament House. We were greeted by Ed Husic, our Federal representative for Chifley. We learnt about how both the Senate and the House of Representatives prepare and made Bills. Next we visited the House of Representative and the Senate and even got to witness some famous politicians in action during question time. Our next stop was the War Memorial which we entered very reverently. We got to take part in the “hands on zone” which let us interact and experience what it was it like during the war. We then went to see the G for George aircraft battle and other aircrafts which are now preserved in the War Memorial. We went to the Hall of Memory and the grave of the unknown soldier. Year six witnessed how many Australian soldiers lost their lives fighting in many past world wars. Later that night, we all went to explore Questacon. We had many hands on experiences investigating natural disasters, sound, air, forces and astronomy. We also had to go into the Mini Q section. In the Mini Q section, it had a robot that you could play air hockey against, a ball throwing machine that could test your aim and of course, the Free Fall Drop. The Free Fall Drop is a slide that you have to hold onto a bar and then release it which in turn makes you fall straight down. Some children decided not to go on it, others chickened out when they were at the top of the slide only a very few went on the slide. Mrs Herbert was of course the first to test it out to make sure it was safe for the other students! On the final day of our excursion, we all went on a tour of the Embassies and visited the Australian Electoral Commission. We all learnt that we could enrol to vote when we were 18. Next we had a mock election activity. After the Electoral Commission, we visited Mt Ainslie, where we got to see Canberra from its highest point. Year six saw all the places we had just visited at the lookout. Our last stop in Canberra, before heading home, was the Australian Institute of Sport. This is where many famous athletes go to train to improve their skills prior to going to major competitions like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. We got the chance to enjoy and try out all the sports like skiing, rowing, basketball, soccer and rock climbing. The year six students loved the experience of having an overnight excursion and they did they did not want it to end! Thank you to our wonderful Year 6 teachers who organised the excursion for us all. And to Mrs Ross and Mr Haynes who also come along.

During Week 7. SAPS will hold our annual fundraiser. This year it is a NINJA WARRIOR FITNESS CHALLENGE COURSE! Students will have the opportunity throughout Week 7 to complete various fitness challenges with their class group and once completed they will be A ST ANDREWS NINJA WARRIOR!

The money raised will go towards TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES for the School

St Andrew’s, Little Big Shots performance showcase will be held in Term 4, Week 2 [Friday the 25th of October]. 

If you would like to try out for this year’s Little Big Shots, start practising soon. Remember to collect an audition form from your teacher.We would love to see creative, interesting and entertaining acts, so get your thinking caps on as to what you may like to perform or present.

This year the P&F is conducting this fundraiser again for those who wish to obtain or renew their membership for 2019-2020. The digital membership will be available to be purchased, downloaded and be used on 4 devices. The Sydney Greater West Book and the Sydney and Surrounds Book are now combined to make the Sydney Book, giving you even greater value for money. Cost is $70 and can be purchased now. Details are in the flyer included in this newsletter.

The book or digital version can be ordered and purchased online. When ordering online, it can either be available for pickup or be sent home with your child, otherwise you can have it delivered at a cost of $12.
