No.13 Fortnightly - 7 May 2021

From the Principal

Welcome to eNews!

Introducing a Hybrid System for Communication

Due to behind the scene changes in the Skoolbag App, we will be moving away from Skoolbag for permission notes to eForms. This hybrid system will use email and Skoolbag.

Permission Note eForms will be emailed to the primary caregivers.

Skoolbag will continue to be used for general notices, calendar, fortnightly newsletters, and community notices. You can still submit absences and lunch orders through the Skoolbag.

Calendar Update, as a school were running multiple calendars, we streamlined the process and closed our Google calendar and all calendars moved into one. This public calendar is viewable on the website and on the Calendar tab of Skoolbag.

Thank you for your support as we introduce this improved system.

God Bless you,

Erik Hofsink

Company Annual General Meeting

Time:      7:30pm

Venue:   New Primary Wing

Attendance: via Try Booking tickets only or by Zoom invite

We would love to invite all interested parents and staff to join the Board for the Company’s 2021 Annual General Meeting. We are very excited for more of us to be able to meet in person, and so to celebrate will be hosting the evening from the new Primary Wing so parents and carers have a chance to appreciate the new facilities.

The evening will include;

  • presentation of the ordinary business of the Company, reviewing the activity and financials of the previous calendar year
  • election of new Directors
  • an update on the school’s building program journey, and
  • launch of the school's new Strategic Plan.

Only Company members will be able to participate in voting during the evening, but we’d like to welcome the broader community to attend, learn about our key priorities and ask any questions you may have.

Please use the following link to secure a seat in person at the school via TryBooking. Alternatively, we know it’s easier for most of us at the moment to participate in evening events by Zoom, so please see the Zoom meeting link following.

Important Notices

No-fear NAPLAN

‘Tis the season again for NAPLAN stress- we work hard to help students understand that NAPLAN is nothing to worry about but many of our Year 3,5,7 and 9 students will head into next week feeling nervous.  Here are some quick reminders you can give your child if they are feeling anxious.

First, NAPLAN is a ‘big picture’ test.  It was designed to see how a year level performs nationally.  You can remind your child that they are participating as part of a very large group and that it is a way to contribute to national education research.

Second, NAPLAN tests a very small range of skills.  They are important skills, yes, but they are far from a complete picture of a student’s skills and strengths.  NAPLAN will try to measure their spelling but cannot tell how well they draw, run, create, solve problems or care for others.

Third, NAPLAN tests a point in time.  It can only tell how well a student did on the day of the test.  It does not know whether they slept the night before, or whether they fought with a sibling on the way to school.  NAPLAN doesn’t go on school reports because we report on what students have been able to demonstrate across a whole semester.

Lastly, our favourite thing about NAPLAN is that it happens every two years, and that helps remind us that the goal is always progress. This year’s results are, at best, a benchmark against which we can measure future growth, and we hope that 2021 can be a ‘no-fear NAPLAN year’ for your children!

Year 7 English: Making Sploosh

In Term 1, students in Year 7 English read the novel Holes by Louis Sachar. The novel is set in Camp Green Lake, a juvenile correction facility, to which the main character Stanley is sent after being wrongly convicted of stealing a pair of shoes. At camp, Stanley befriends Zero. After an argument with the camp warden, Zero flees the camp and escapes into the desert. Stanley later escapes the camp to find Zero, and is shocked to discover that he has survived on preserved jars of spiced peaches – which he calls “Sploosh”.

Following the completion of the novel, Year 7 English spent a lesson creating “Sploosh” with the kind help of Mrs Thompson and Mrs Sissing. But unlike the sploosh in the novel, we don’t intend on hiding it in the desert for the next 110 years!
