Holy Trinity Primary Granville

Term 3 Week 4 - 6th August 2021

From the Leadership Team

Philip Mahony | Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a difficult couple of weeks for all the members of Holy Trinity Granville with the greater restrictions during lockdown. All the teachers, Support Staff and parents are doing an amazing work supporting the children's learning. The children have done an exceptional job with their online remote learning. Remember to do your best and don't get stressed with each other. Due to a positive COVID exposure at the school last Friday, the majority of the staff are now working from home and there is minimal supervision at the school for children of essential workers.

The teachers are constantly looking at ways to support families and making adjustments to the remote learning. Don't hesitate to contact your child's class teacher or the school if you need assistance.

  THE BEST BOOKS FOR CHILDREN

What makes the perfect children's book?  Young readers prefer  adventure, silliness and a few good scares to soppy sermons about love and inclusivity. As any bedtime-story veteran knows, books with a  heavy-handed moral message just don't strike a chord with little ones. Just as importantly, they're more likely to put parents to sleep before their youngsters. And this is key: the perfect children's book must appeal to adults as well as kids, in equal proportion. They're the ones reading it after all - night after night after night ...

I loved everything by Julia Donaldson and Lynley Dodd. I Loved Chris Riddell's Ottoline, Jeff Kinney's Wimpy Kid and Jeff Brown's Flat Stanley. I loved Harry Hill's Tim the Tiny Horse.

More than any of them, I loved Hippos Go Berserk! by Sandra Boynton, a simple counting story book about a lonely hippo who invites a couple of pals over and ends up having a wild house party which quickly descends int debauchery, mass destruction and full-on anarchy. I adored that book as much as my kids did, and it made me realise that full-on anarchy really is the sweet spot when it comes to appealing to children and adults.

Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are, observed that "children are tough, though we tend to to think of them as fragile". He also said, "I don't write got children, I just write", which is perhaps crucial to his enduring popularity.

I'll leave you with another question: can someone please tell me how to persuade a 16- and a 13-year old to put down their phones for just five minutes and pick up a book again?

Warm regards

Jason Fisher | Assistant Principal

As we continue the period of online learning during the lockdown period it is extremely important for children to do work daily. This can be difficult for parents who quite often have their own work to do. The majority of activities provided for online learning are set at a level where the children can do the activities by themselves.

Things that can help with the children at home are;

1) Set a schedule where the children have to work each day.

2) Set a learning space where children can work. This will provide structure for the children.

3) Mix up the activities so the children can do onscreen and offscreen activities.

4) Set regular break times, including morning tea and lunch.

5) Parents need to provide the structure for the children. If the children have the choice they will probably do the minimum and move on to playing.

Parents/Carers you are doing a wonderful job and your children will benefit from your efforts.

Religious Education News | Mark Galea

The Feast of St Mary MacKillop: Today we were able to join together as a community of prayer to recognise Australia’s first saint, Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Her feast day is this Sunday. The students of Holy Cross Parish (Holy Trinity and Holy Family primary schools) joined together to create pictures and prayers for Mary MacKillop and other Saints. This morning, our school community was able to join together with Fr Andrew for a zoom liturgy to recognise the life and works of Mary MacKillop, a saint who has walked on our grounds.

The Feast Of the Assumption: Next Sunday is the Feast of the Virgin Mary’s Assumption into Heaven. Interestingly, you won’t find mention of this event in the bible. Whilst it has been the belief of Catholics for centuries, it was only declared dogma in 1950 by Pope Pius XII and made a Holy Day of Obligation. For us, the day signifies that no other person deserves our respect and adoration as Mary does, the most pure, devoted and caring human to grace the earth. So much so that God granted her body and soul to ascend into heaven at the end of her time on earth. Next Friday we will have a zoom liturgy to acknowledge this occasion at 10:00am.
