Weekly Prayer Reflection

Christmas Calendars

When I was a child, there were Advent calendars on which doors were opened at each date, to reveal different religious scenes in preparation for Christmas.  It was a simple way of teaching children the mystery of Jesus and the place of waiting for Christmas.  Well some years ago Advent Calendars made a comeback but what in different forms, firstly chocolates behind the doors,  now, lego, money, finger puppets, wine, seemingly anything except Jesus.  A strange one from a few years ago was on The Economist website. It gave graphs and data concerning different countries of the world.  Amongst the data were the following:  Australia has one of the highest rates of well-being and wealth and we have the highest rate of gambling loss in the world – by a long shot.  So how come so many people who are ‘healthy and wealthy’ throw away so much money.

We don’t live on bread, or wealth or health alone.  Deep in our hearts is a deep passionate need for something more.  Quite simply we are made for God, and if we don’t seek God, we may try to fill that hunger with other needs.  Why don’t people see this readily?  Because love calls on us to transcend ourselves, to put others - whether it is God, a spouse or children - before ourselves and that is not easy.  God knows this and so sent his Son, Jesus to show us how it is done and to be with us on the journey.  As you seek to show love this Christmas, ask Jesus to be with you as companion and guide.  Let each situation be like a little door which you can open and recognise that “God is with us”.

Loving God, send us your Spirit over this coming Christmas so that we may allow Jesus to come into our lives with his love and his life.  We ask this in his name, confident that you will hear us.

From the Principal

Thank you and farewell

As we near the end of the school year, which is my eighth year as principal and eleventh on staff here, I am definitely feeling some very mixed emotions. I have been so honoured and privileged to be a part of this wonderful community for so long. I would never have anticipated, when I agreed to a six-month contract over a decade ago, that I would have become so connected to this school, as a teacher, parent, assistant principal and principal.

While I am excited about the new experiences and opportunities I will have in my role as Assistant Director: Mission for Catholic Education Diocese of Rockhampton, I will greatly miss the St Joseph’s Wandal families, staff and most of all, students. I look forward to working with all kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools throughout our Diocese, as far north as Mackay, west to Longreach and south to Bundaberg, but it goes without saying, that this school will always hold a very special place in my heart.

I continue to be inspired by the extraordinary work that our staff do in encouraging our children to be the very best learners they can be. I have been so lucky to work with a team of such passionate and enthusiastic educators. I have made lifelong friends and have many fond memories.

I offer to each and every one of you my heartfelt thanks for placing your trust in me, and in this school, allowing me the honour of working with you, in both good and difficult times. I look forward to continuing my relationship with the St Josephs’ Wandal community, albeit in a slightly different way.

In closing, I wish all of you many blessings this Christmas season and I look forward to catching up with you all again soon.

 With much appreciation,

Kellie

and the peace of the Christ child be ours this Christmas.

And may the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, rest upon us and remain with us always.
