Weekly Prayer Reflection

How to be a saint like Mother Teresa without leaving home

I knew two people who had met Mother, now Saint, Teresa and both gave interesting insights into her sanctity.  The first was an Australian nun, travelling in India.  By happenstance, she was seated on a train with a nun in the habit of the Missionaries of Charity.  The Australian said both had a pleasant time and she felt her companion was so interested in what she had to say that she ‘had made this woman’s day’.  Only afterwards, when the woman left, did she realise she had been speaking with Mother Teresa and that it was the quality of her attentiveness that made the time so special.

The other, a friend, spent time working in her order and her experience was that St Teresa was not necessarily soft and kind.  She had a vision of what was needed for the poor and helpless, and those who were there to help could be treated with a real tough love in order for them to learn how to serve.

True loving care of children requires both those qualities.  As parents, teachers, guardians we need to give our children a level of attentiveness that often is difficult and self-effacing but true care will never take place without it.  It is not enough to be around children.  We need to stop, listen to the stories or the reading, watch their reactions and just be with them.  We have to go out of ourselves. As we get to know them well, we come to realise where the ‘tough love’ needs to be applied.  We are not our children’s friends and, at times, for their good we have to make decisions, say things, take a stand in ways our children will not like. Often, we will feel that we need to be a saint to rear with our child/ren. And indeed you do …they are God’s way of making you a saint.  May St Teresa pray for you and for all parents who serve God with love when they serve their children in love.

Loving Father, thank you for the gift of my child/ren. May my care of them be the way you make a saint of me.  I ask this in Jesus’ name and through the intercession of St Teresa of Kolkata.

Prayer Reflection - Social Justice Sunday 29 August Prayer

Lord, when we listen with your ears we hear: the bush grown more silent, the birdsong less vibrant, the stream’s sluggish ripple. Have mercy and open our ears. Lord, when we look with your eyes we see: the soil depleted, the sky smudged, the oceans rubbished and the great currents slowed. Have mercy and help us to see. Lord, when we look with your eyes we see: the workers who struggle to get by, the women subjected to violence, the people who are excluded. Have mercy and help us to see. Lord, when we listen with your ears we hear: the sound of hungry children, the distress of the mentally ill, the silent pain of homeless women and men. Have mercy and open our ears. Send your Spirit upon us Lord to renew our sight, to restore our hearing, and to reclaim your reign of justice for all people and peace for creation. AMEN

Fr Matthias visits Year 1 to share how he contributes to the Catholic Faith

As part of our new Religion unit, Year 1 were visited by Father Matthias. He spoke to us about his role within our Parish. He told us that the priest looks after the people of God – Catholic and Non-Catholics. Priests serve the people and celebrate Mass.

Father Matthias was asked questions such as:

Why do you like being a priest?

Being a priest is very interesting because I get to connect with people. A highlight for me is whenever I am celebrating the mass, but also when I am with the people.

What do you do on your days off?

I go horse riding, walks on the beach and visit the animals at the zoo.

Busy Beaks in Prep

Look at our amazing busy beak birds!  Busy Beaks is a beautifully illustrated book that teaches the reader lots of fascinating things about Australian birds.  It is great that the Preps responded to this wonderful text by creating some wonderful birds of their own!

Book Week Reviews from Year One

It was a very tough decision but, ‘No! Never!’ was our favourite book of all the nominations for the CBCA award. It was also our pick for the “Book of the Year: Early Childhood”. It was very funny and entertaining. All of us agreed that we had said “No, never!” to our parents at some stage. The main character, Georgie, keeps saying “No! Never!”, so her parents say it back to her and she gets sad. She learns not to say it again unless it is needed. We think that this book has a great message for children as we felt happy at the end.

The “Picture Book of the Year” was an even more difficult decision. Some of our favourite authors have made the list but 'Ellie’s Dragon' was the most popular with all members of our class. The illustrations helped us to have a greater understanding of the story.

The “CBCA Award for New Illustrator” award was our favourite selection. Our pick for this award is ‘Ribbit, Rabbit, Robot’. This is a fun book, which needed us to infer from the pictures. The pictures are very important to understand the story so we feel that Sofya Karmazina was the best. We really liked this book and the different characters. You can have lots of laughs whilst reading this book by using different voices and expression. We think all little kids will enjoy this book.  A special mention for ‘Shirley Purdie’. We enjoyed this book as it is a true story. It has aboriginal paintings. Shirley Purdie is from the top of Australia and she is a famous artist. We learnt about her life. An interesting thing we learnt was about kangaroo ticks, as we hadn’t heard about them before reading this book.

Bird of a Feather in Year Five

Year Five have enjoyed reading some of the excellent shortlisted books this year.  One of the books we enjoyed was 'How to Make a Bird'.  This book is not really about making a bird, but rather is about letting your imagination take over and getting out and creating!  We enjoyed creating some feathers to decorate the bushes near out room, writing some key creative ideas on them.
