Welcome to the Alawa Primary School weekly newsletter.

Acting Principal Updates

Hello everyone,

I hope you have had a restful break and are ready for a fantastic Term 4. Like all schools we have a very busy term planned. We have many events to look forward to as we prepare to finalise 2021 as well as get ready for 2022. In the next week you will be sent home a class letter from your child's teacher giving more detail on what is happening this term.

Our Principal, Sandy will be on leave for another 2 weeks and Matt Lotherington will be in the role of Assistant Principal. Di Griffin, one of our regular relief teachers, who knows all the children very well, will backfill in Mr Lotheringtons class.

Our Senior Learning Commissioners will be presenting at a Leadership Summit next week which will take place at the Convention Centre. They have been asked to share with other school leaders what the Learning Commission is and why we have it. This will include sharing their journey in becoming Commissioner's and how they can influence change at Alawa. I am sure they will make Alawa proud.

Have a wonderful week.

Genevieve Donohue [Acting Principal of the Best School in the Multiverse]

Acting Assistant Principal Updates

It is a very busy time at Alawa at the moment as end of year assessments are conducted across the school. These include reading, writing, maths and science.

This is a crucial time for teachers and students as the assessments contribute to students’ reports. As well as this though, we actively encourage students and their teachers to view this busy period as a chance to celebrate all of the hard work they have put in throughout the year and their dedication to their learning. These assessments also provide a chance for students and their teachers to measure the progress and growth they have made in many areas of the curriculum over the course of the year.

We congratulate our students and teachers for their commitment during this busy time and look forward to the stories to be told by the data that students are creating with their assessments.

Matthew Lotherington [Acting Assistant Principal]

Honour Distinction Award

Our last Principal for the Day and Alawa Distinction Award winner for Term 3, Mr Harrison Davey spent the day helping out in the office and around the school.

Harrison said 'It was excellent and fun being Principal for the day. My favourite part was visiting all the classes and giving out merits. I also got to help out with jobs for the front office and sit in Ms Cartwright's office"

Alawa Distinction Awards are received once a student receives 100 merits [10 Alawa Honour Awards]. Merits are awarded when a student shows the Alawa School values - Respect, Encouragement, Pride and Personal Best.

We are certainly proud of all our students for their ongoing positive attitude towards learning and their time at school.

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 10 Term 3: 92.30%

It is terrific having all our families back with us at school.

The class with the highest attendance for Week 10: Year 2 Bernardino with 97.62%!

In the lead for Term 3: Year 1 White with 96.72%

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 31 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 10 Term 3!

The classes with the least lates for Week 10 were: Preschool Blue Group and Year 1 White with 0 lates!

In the lead for the term we have Preschool Blue Group with 5 lates!!!

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behaviour in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points from the activity after recess on Friday where we count the students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 10 of Term 3 Manton was ahead of Goyder and Finnis.

Finnis is in the lead for the year!

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break. This gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each day we allocate class points during Muster time recognising those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

In Week 10 of Term 3, the class with the most points was... Year 2 Ward with 142 points!

Preschool news

It is so nice to have our preschooler's back after the two week break. The children are really enjoying exploring the freshly arranged learning environment inside. There is a small world play area set up as a jungle scene complete with cheetahs, monkeys, lions, giraffes and more. Children have shared what they know about jungle animals, and we will be learning lots of new things and adding our discoveries to our jungle animals wall display.

A new literacy area has been set up as a post office and letter writing station. The postie will have to collect the mail regularly from the post box as there are a lot of important postcards, letters and packages being created and posted every day. As well as writing letters, children have been folding paper and creating handmade envelopes to place their correspondence in. We have had a great start to the term.

Have a lovely week,

Alice, Emma and Kelly and Flor [Preschool Team]

Super star students..

During the school holidays super star Alawa students Alexandra, Hamish, Jude, Taylah and Henry travelled to Alice springs to compete in the 2021 BMX NT Championships at Red Centre BMX Club and the final rounds of the NT series.

They had many races against other competitors from across the NT.

Taylah was named both 1st place in the tournament as well as the series for U11 girls. Alex was named 2nd place in the tournament and 1st place for the entire series for U8 girls, Henry and Jude both received a sprocket plate for their participation and Hamish was named 7th place for the series after a bit of a crash during the semi-finals.

Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the racing and staying at the Big 4 together.
